But then what's even #GraphQL's place? For living between the server and the database it's just not powerful enough (maybe #Hasura would disagree?).

Paul

Due to the security/DoS concerns, a lot of people are now actually advising against putting #GraphQL between the server and the end-user. And it makes sense to me: Why should the user be able to control the shape of the results *at run time*?

Paul

Somebody on the Orange Site described #GraphQL as "not a query language, but a results shaping language". And sure, it does that well. I'd throw in that it has a type system as well. But it's so much further from a full solution for APIs than I had hoped, with the bonus of added security/DoS concerns.
You can control how a result set is displayed, but you can't really control what set is actually returned (without manual implementation).

Paul

I was so disappointed to find out that #GraphQL can't actually really be used for querying. The closest it comes to it is a third-party convention for pagination! Even that isn't built in!

Paul

The cool thing about #EdgeQL (by #EdgeDB) over #GraphQL is that you can actually use it for ... querying.

tRPC vs graphQL

I want to hear opinions from people who have used both. ๐Ÿ™‚

My main reason for using graphQL is it can reduce request waterfalls; custom types; type safe; graphiql UI. I am not worried about client library.

I can see some of the benefits overlap with tRPC.

My concern; few graphQL server implementations are popular & they seem to take everyone in the direction they want.

I am willing to look at tRPC but does it provide all these benefits?

I don't get much satisfaction from writing code nowadays TBH, but over the weekend I wrote a prototype for providing flexibly aggregated sales data through our #GraphQL API.

It stitches together #SQL and passes arguments down to #PostgreSQL using the Ransack gem, and it felt good to be providing so much functionality with a fairly small amount of code.

It felt robust, easy to extend, and it pushed the hard work to the database where it belongs.

Sometimes it all comes together nicely

- a lot of consumers wanted access to Gigabytes of data, and transferring this via #GraphQL creates a huge overhead.

So it turned out that it a traditional REST API would have been a better choice, both it would be easier to maintain with a smaller team, and it's a more established technology that would scale better for this specific project.

Summary about GraphQL

GraphQL is awesome, but you get a lot of complexity with it.

If you want to dump data, then GraphQL is unsuitable.

Can be a good choice for interactive solutions where you send little data and do not know how the APl will be used.

By investing in a client, you can get type safety and control for free!

Pรฅl Thomassen (https://www.linkedin.com/in/p%C3%A5l-thomassen-03354212) now shares his bad experience with GraphQL for building an API for traffic data at Statens Vegvesen.

He starts with a basic introduction to #GraphQL. The bug advantage he mentions is that it is great to document the contract between server and clients, and there are many tools that can generate consumer code.

Something thatโ€™s been taking a lot of thought where I work is type safety across our stack (#Go backend, #Vue frontend)
At the moment the current option weโ€™re looking is #GraphQL and codegen on both sides, but weโ€™ve been exploring other options such as gRPC with codegen from proto files or larger systems like Temporal.

Iโ€™m curious how other #developers handle this!

@leeb I guess it was called #GraphQL because it was created to query the Facebook graph? Is the best way to query a graph a tree? Funny, that, no? (Hard to imagine successfully using a graph to query a graph? I guess your choices are coming up with a new version that does that, or considering renaming the foundation :-P)

The funny part about #graphql is that it doesnโ€™t actually produce a graph, it produces a tree. And the query is a tree, too, not a graph. Maybe TreeQL didnโ€™t sound sexy enough.

I've often thought #tRPC seems cool, but I can't use it because my backend is in #golang.

My favorite thing about #graphql is having shared types between the client and server, but the complexity of using it (especially in go) is high.

I just watched @dimitropoulos talk at #JSWorld about using #protobuf and #gRPC on the web using https://github.com/bufbuild/connect-web and I'm pretty intrigued. Guarantees on the shape of my data? JSON serialization? Generated #TanstackQuery clients? Yes, please.

Had a chance to tinker with WebDevStudio's starter kit for NextJS + WordPress. I ran into a few issues, but was able to overcome them. Even submitted a pull request to suggest some corrections. Overall it's a little rough around the edges but the block component functionality is off the charts amazing. If you are comfortable with React and headless WP, time it a go. Once you get it working the editing experience is awesome.

Cool post from engineering at Khan Academy about something new to me, #GraphQL federation.

It lets you query a heterogeneous collection of services via a single endpoint with a single schema.

They were using it to smooth a gradual migration from a Python backend to a Go backend, but it seems like a useful abstraction layer for any project with multiple backend services that are queried externally.
