So recently I've read a few articles about #YouTube (YT) demanding its users to disable #Adblockers.
The especially funny part about this is how YT has apparently started banning users for using adblockers.
Personally I don't really use YT all that much since there's other video platforms that aren't as obnoxious, but when I sieved a bit through a few media articles and user comments on this topic, I often saw people simping on YT, claiming that YT got all the rights to do that because they offer services and that all those using adblockers are leeches, deserving what they've got coming for them. They mean, you just need to buy YT Premium and all is fine.
I'm calling it simping cause that's a dumb myth, created by Google to milk its users.
First off, if we're talking about leeches, YT would be the primary leech. After all, they make money of what others create on their platform. It's not like YT creates its own content like Netflix, Disney+, or any TV station. They solely provide infrastructure for people to vent their creativity.
Now, of course I'm not saying that YT shouldn't receive money for providing this service. And oh man, the sure get a lot of revenue for this (see graph from YT itself below).
So, YT is raking in billions in revenue for other people's work by just providing a subpar platform architecture and more than bad quality assurance when it comes to the content.
And for this crappy service, they nowadays seem to demand "free" viewers to watch 5-10 unskippable ads with ad content not rarely being scams and toxic.
If you look at the chart below, however, you'll immediately understand why YT does what it does. I mean it's not like YT hasn't been raking in billions of dollars for over a decade now.
But in #capitalism, you always need #growth. And how can a leech platform generate revenue?
Yep, through ads.
So, you logically increase the number of ads, then add a paid subscription model to remove those ads. Then add another layer to this by having ads for the subscribers, but add a higher subscriber level to get rid of those new ads and so forth.
And in 2020 something happened that pushed many people to be stuck at home, not knowing what to do with their time: Covid. This was a golden time for YT and many other online service providers.
And here the rich investors behind Google and YT saw the potential revenue for YT. And of course, the greed of #capitalists is endless, so they want this wonderful time of big stock value to come back.
Which is where we are at today.
By the way, YT worked as business just as fine pre-Covid without enforcing ads, so yeah, "simping on YT" as I said before.
And no, I'm not saying creators shouldn't be paid. Rather, please support the creators you like by paying them directly instead of relying on YT ad revenue for the creators (which is already included in the chart below btw). I also support the creators I like. 👍

Just finished Week 2 of prolific producer Aubrey Whitfield's "Advanced Producing" course. Learning a lot! Think I'm going to pick up some of her other courses too (mixing, mastering and sync licensing).
Am also signed up for a separate 4 day "vocal coaching" retreat in April. This one is a bit nerve wracking!

The argument here on rent and technofeudalism is interesting.
Oddly, this is sort of what finance has already done. Investors, VCs, other owners of large amounts of capital loan it to companies (and governments?), and demand repayment with interest. While larger institutional investors may be playing a longer, more conservative game and accept lower rates of return, VC and more aggressive investors demand higher rates of return (in part because they’re gambling and often lose).
This demand for repayment with interest adds nitro fuel to the industrial (and financial) growth economy. And not because more things or more services are good or needed. Because more profit is demanded by financial rentiers as they exploit people and planet.
