Ha, I found my multimeter from the Nineties, the one that could measure inductance and capacitance!
But I am not sure if I remember how it works?
I think that maybe it only measures L and C, from the slotted terminals. Like it was designed to measure discrete through-hole devices.
I wonder if I have alligator clip jumpers around still? Somewhere?

Retagging: Someone into #hamradio and in Europe has a trusty oscilloscope they no longer need?
@Natanox , who habitually repairs electronics, has use for it.
Natasha: If the Fediverse doesn't help here, a possible plan B could involve amateur radio magazines that carry ads from people selling such stuff (depending on what you need). I could provide scans.

@ruedigergad @abraxas3d@mastodon.radio getting away from #hamradio orgs restored the joy I had for working in radio. The realization of how much of my time and energy was wasted is a downer. Coming to terms with quite a bit of deliberately disgusting behavior has not been fun, but the outcome is well worth it.
I live in Sheffield UK which, like Rome, is built on 7 hills. My #antenna - a 42 metre long #doublet - drops from 8 metres high to 5 metres high on the north leg, but the end is at ground floor level, compared to the house, because of the slope. But the slope also tilts your ground and, so, the take off angles. These are lower, compared to the actual horizon, than you'd expect from an inverted V - specially on higher frequencies. So I do better than expected into Japan & USA. #hamradio

Looking around the garage, I found my old magnetic loop experiment from 2005.
I had stripped open an extension cord with a mangled plug, separated all the conductors, then wound them around a 5-sided wooden form.
That's the inductor.
I found an air variable capacitor to put in parallel, to make an LC circuit.
Can it resonate and ring on the 630m and 2200m ham bands?
If so, I am going to see if I can send out some Raspberry Pi 1mW WSPR and FST4W signals.

Maybe I need to put all my blogger essays on Medium?
It's been a long strange trip.
Bizarro behavior from #AMSAT. Bizarro behavior from a CalTech employee who freaked out over a woman putting together a ham radio exam for a volunteer fire department. Dark Crystal Sketsi powermongers at #ARRL. Went back and peered at some SQL queries on wspr.rocks
And my 1 mW WSPR transmissions on 20m are indeed getting out!
From the 10 spots listed, looks like I'm making it to 500-1500 km away.
Next steps would be to resonate the dusty big mag loop on the MF band, and send something out.
Probably use the Nano-VNA to tune?
Then try to figure out if I have anything that can listen to 630m, so I can self-spot.
I wonder if I could use a 741 op amp to buffer and amplify?

For the practical component of my exam I might draw a transceiver on cardboard for practice purposes. #HamRadio
On 14.300 MHz, I heard the Maritime Mobile Service net doing their work.
Someone checked in from the container ship, Madsen Lurline, described their crew, gave their position just east of Hawaii in latitude and longitude, and explained that they were doing the monthly test of the emergency HF transmitter.
I heard many strong signals on 40m too. Because I was feeling curious, I pulled my wire down from the tree branch, threw it across the dry lawn.
Signals still loud. Huh!

Walkies up in the redwoods today.
Partly, it was just the family together clumping along a creekside path together, listening to birds, looking at plants, greeting others on the trail.
At the meadow, we split up. My spouse and older kid marched on, cameras in hand. Younger kid and I set up at a picnic table. He whittled sticks. I set up the QRP HF radio and threw a wire into a tree.
Made one contact, Oakland to Phoenix.
Mostly listened to the waves.
Heard lots of people.

Redoing this poll due to a suggestion by @kilroy_was_here ...

@deafferret Iโm on the #HamRadio comms support team for the MS 150, a big 2 day charity bike ride from Cherry Hill to Ocean City NJ and back.
found myself wanting to get back into ham radio. I'd quite like to build a little direct-conversion receiver for 20m. only problem is I've barely enough space for an antenna and surrounded by buildings. wonder how well a loop like this would work.
http://sm0vpo.altervista.org/antennas/20m_ant_00.htm
#hamradio
My first MS 150 #HamRadio location for the day at mile marker 5.8. Itโs darker than it looks in the photo!

A magnetic loop is a sort of antenna. Coax brings the signal in a little feed loop, and that tickles the main loop, which rings like a bell.
Currents rush around the circumference of the loop, and there's a big capacitor in the loop where charge builds up. Then the electrons change their minds and rush back around the other way. About 14 million times a second.
When the current flows, a magnetic field grabs at the sky and woobles it with tiny squeaks.
That's how signals are sent!
Running the Raspberry Pi GPIO WSPR program and squeaking 1mW on 20m into a homemade mag loop, trying to see if anything hears the warbles.
Then listening with the house radio and WJST-X, which decodes it fine.
But I don't see any of my self-reported spots showing up at pskreporter.info, though.
Then trying sending 5W warbles with Yaesu on 40m to see if other stations post automatic spots of me. They do: NY, AK, WA.
Eh, software.
Maybe I will poke at it tomorrow.

Helped my son make a #hamradio contact to Japan on 10m (using his own Technician call, on HF) tonight! Now he's remembering why he wants to upgrade to General Class (more ability to reach overseas and to other countries across a wide range of bands).

Anyone, particularly open-source devs have any interest in talking to me about this, even if its just to make sure their ideas are considered as I launch... but people who want to help more directly are welcome too.

I finally got my assignment for the MS150 this weekend. I'll be working as a #HamRadio communicator and a road marshal just outside of Ocean City, NJ at the intersection of Route 9 and Roosevelt Blvd. That's mile 95.5 on Saturday and 5.8 on Sunday. If you're riding or volunteering, say hi!
So apparently I just realized when i first started as a ham over a decade ago I participated in an E-M-E contact (Earth-Moon-Earth). I had no idea what it was at the time but i see in my notes it just says "EME net?" and now as a more expiernced ham i literally know I was talking with someone by bouncing our signals off the moon..... soooo cool.
Some internals from the pirate radio station I was affiliated with. #hamradio

Hmmm I've tried a couple different repeaters and I'm not having much luck. Does anyone have a suggestion on what repeater I should try (I prefer 2m but can do 70cm as well) for old town #Monterey #California with a little traffic on it?
Preferably a repeater with users who won't mind me testing things a bit...
I'm playing with my #Baofeng UV-5RE while I wait for some data to process and wow I've forgotten how to set it up to work with a repeater. I guess it's time to do a little googling.
Or maybe the repeater I'm trying to hit in the Monterey area isn't online? ๐ค
99% of the time I operate in simplex mode on 2m because I generally use my radio to talk to other 4x4ers. Need to get back in the habit of using some repeaters.
52 QSOs, mostly #PSK63 but a few #RTTY, in this evening's #RSGB #AutumnSeries data modes contest.
Not bad for 10W unassisted, though I think I can do better.
quick question. does IPV6 IP addresses work with #DVSwitch Mobile. i'm trying to get the cheapest cloud provider to host my #Allstar node. #AmateurRadio #HamRadio #Allstarlink
@N3VEM This is a good one! Iโm into digital modes right now but I really want to get into POTA / SOTA.
@ingalls Iโll toss out #HamRadio #HamTalk question for you!, just because Itโs something Iโm often curious about - since Ham Radio is a hobby of many hobbies, what is everyoneโs current โnicheโ in the hobby? Digital modes? HF Ragchewing? Repeaters? RC or Radio Telemetry stuff? #POTA? Kit Building? Etc?
Hi all, unfortunately I have not had time to queue up questions for #HamTalk this week. Still, feel free to ask your own questions, show off your #HamRadio / #AmateurRadio equipment, or any sort of thing you like!
I will have questions ready for next week!
Another ham radio project was the old Whispering Raspberries board. Fould it floating about the office in a plastic bin.
Still plugged into a Raspberry Pi 2.
A Rasp Pi has a GPIO bus, where you can wiggle pin voltages from code.
Fast enough, and weak radio waves come out. Do it with the WSPR protocol, and faint signals get decoded far away.
Maybe.
Did I mention I have the beginnings of a LF/MF mag loop antenna? Probably wildly inefficient!
But fun to try.
I should.

I deal with an S4 noise level on all bands except 10M where I have an S5 noise level in my suburban location. Some would just say "that's terrible" and give up but I just deal with it and operate anyway because I'm so happy I have an antenna that's stealth enough and a nice rig to enjoy on the air. I've worked 69 countries and all 50 states with this setup so far. #AmateurRadio #HamRadio
I hope this means we're finally far enough along in Solar Cycle 25 to start experiencing reliable 10M openings more often. #AmateurRadio #HamRadio
Ended my work day to find out there's been a fabulous 10M opening all day! Just worked KF4ZZY in GA on 28.495 MHz SSB with a 57 signal report! Tried CW first but there's no activity at all down there. Come on CW ops. #AmateurRadio #HamRadio
Now that I have a video releasing in about six hours, it's time to think about the next one. Who wants to learn about this thing?
Task 1 for this afternoon/evening completed:
FT-991A shifted from Mac to to RaspberryPi 4, flrig & fldigi installed & configured & tested (pskreporter hears psk31 on 20m & CW modulates), JS8Call installed & configured & tested (pskreporter hears on 20m & 40m)
auto-start/auto-shutdown is sweet, and the magic of X-Window plus ssh tunneling means I can fire up and run that rig from *anywhere*
#HamTalk A4. In high school I enjoyed checking into the morning weather roundup. I did this semi-regularly, but sometimes it was hard for teenage me to get up at 06:00. #HamRadio / #AmateurRadio
#HamTalk A2. Yes I have! I have volunteered to do communications at a marathon in the Tri-Cities and, as many know, worked on a university high altitude balloon project. #HamRadio #AmateurRadio
#HamTalk A1. Hello all from Portland! I havenโt made a contact on radio recently enough to remember what it was, probably just some chit chat on a local net. #HamRadio #AmateurRadio
One final question for today but feel free to stick around to chat about #HamRadio / #AmateurRadio and to answer the questions whenever you feel like!
#HamTalk Q5. Have you ever received a piece of useful advice while using your ham radio? What was it?
Keeping on the #weather theme (I am a meteorologist after all) for this next question:
#HamTalk Q4. Have you ever reported weather via #HamRadio / #AmateurRadio? This could be something like having a station on #APRS, participating in a net, storm chasing, etc.
Also on the topic of APRS, the #APRSThursday net is going until 23:59 UTC Thursday so donโt forget to check in.
Here in the Pacific Northwest weโre about to transition to our wet season which has me thinking about preparing my house.
#HamTalk Q3. Do you do any winterization of your #HamRadio / #AmateurRadio equipment? If so, what sort of things do you do?
For some people, community engagement is a big part of their #HamRadio / #AmateurRadio experience so letโs talk about that!
#HamTalk Q2. Have you ever volunteered your ham radio abilities for a community event of some sort?
Giving opportunity for #HamTalk question time: If you have a burning question about #HamRadio / #AmateurRadio ask it here. Ask anything you want and letโs see what the community can come up with regardless of whether youโre unlicensed, new, or have been an operator for decades.
