A Happy Story
I had this friend. He was actually my best friend, here in Munich. We used to spend a lot of time together, shit-talk, discuss philosophy, physics, computers, politics, science in general, theology, literature, art ... you see, there was not a single topic we wouldn't discuss.
He was intelligent, witty, sometimes quite sarcastic (the nice sarcastic), but kind of really nice person.
Even though we were best friends, we never knew much about each other's time before we had met for the first time.
We spent vacations together - Malaysia, Cuba, Corsica. Malaysia was even him and me only.
He was also my wife's best (male) friend. Sometimes they were inseparable - and his (former) wife was one of my really good female friends. When we went to parties people would mismatch on who's who's partner (no, there was never anything more than platonic love between all of us).
Aaaanyway, then there was a falling out. About 2017/2018, something happened. This was years after his wife left him. I really don't know exactly what happened but there was a falling out. Even after he became the boyfriend of my SIL (long story, another time), things were cold between us, between him and me and between him and my wife.
Everybody suffered, nobody really tried to fix it. Everybody just accepted that the friendship was over (as it sometimes happens, no problem). But my SIL also suffered: now that she had a boyfriend (after how her husband left her for a yoga teacher 15 years younger than himself), and she was happy. But whenever we all met, things were awkward and nobody could really enjoy the company of each other.
I had enough.
Last time I saw him (Thursday last week), I asked him what he is up to on the weekend. And he said "nothing special". - "ok, shall we both meet and do something together?" - "oh, that would be lovely." - "Ok, let's chat on Saturday/Sunday."
...
On Saturday morning, I called him: "Any ideas? Any plans?" - (quite surprised):"No, nothing. I just have to do some shopping. Shall we meet after that?" - "Yeah, do you have anything in mind?" - "No, not yet."
We hang up. After five minutes he sends a text asking if I'd like to go for a walk around "Osterseen" (Easter Lakes), which is about 3.5h hours of walk through a beautiful nature park close to Munich. Me: "Aw, that would be awesome. And we can drive there in my convertible, because the weather is so nice" - "Oh, I hadn't thought of that. That sounds lovely! I'll send you a text when I'm in the subway to your place!"
...
Then he arrives, after greeting him I said: "Look, I don't know what happened, I guess we all made some mistakes, some stupid things. But that is the past. I don't care about the past. I don't want to talk about it. I just fucking want my friend back. Let's start all over, can we?"
...
Long story short: we had an amazing, wonderful walk - more than four hours. Enjoying the sun, the beautiful weather (suffering the horrible mosquitos), had a gorgeous dinner at Starnberger See (the large beautiful lake).
We talked. We talked about our respective histories, our time before we had met for the first time. I told him about my chronic sickness, about my transition, about the death of my father last week.
It was so amazing: with him, I felt safe, I felt cozy, I felt ... at home again.
And for the first time since I know him, he told me about very personal, very private things. About things that hurt him as a child, as young adult, as a husband and as a father.
I know it is only a start - but we both knew at the end that it is a good start. And in fact, it is better than before.
Unfortunately, I can't post a photo with his face without asking him and I just wanted to share this joy with all of you. But believe me: he was super happy, super excited, and at the end of the day when we had to say "good bye", he did have tears in his eyes (but turned away very, very quickly 🥹)

#AI can go to one of two extremes:
1) AI helps us move to a #postscarcity society, solves #globalwarming and we can stop working while enjoying safe, #happy lives.
2) AI decides we're a threat and uses a combination of AI run weaponry and turning off energy, water & other utilities to wipe out #humanity. Leading to our #extinction.
Sadly the second option is probably the more likely.
But hey! On the #bright_side: at least we'll be able to create pretty images using prompts for a while... 😂

I read 7 #books last month.
I haven't read any this month.
For a bit, I was frustrated with myself. Why wasn't I reading? But then I realized where that time was going: a bunch of TV shows I've wanted to watch for a long, long time. And I made a couple of contributions to open source project docs.
I can't do everything. I can only ever choose to do something by not doing many other things.
And, for February, I'm very happy with the choices I've made.
I've been working on getting my own Mastodon instance setup the last 2 days now and I have come to realize, there's a TON of things an admin has to do to get ready to launch the public.
It's fun and exciting. I just had no idea there was this much that went into it.
For those that are asking, yes, this is a public instance I'm working on setting up that isn't just a single user instance.
