‘Kona’ storm dumps exceptional rains, mountain snows on Hawaii

Extreme rainfall plagued #Hawaii’s Big Island and Maui. Rainfall totaled 15 inches or more on three Hawaiian islands.

The Big Island summits received plowable snowfall. Freezing temperatures accompanied 5 inches of heavy, wet #snow atop Mauna Kea, which reaches 13,803 feet in elevation.

It's Kona low season in #Hawaii, which is when the prevailing trade winds slack off and moisture seeps up from the south or southwest. Basically: Wet and coolish.

Just explained to someone today that Hawaii does have seasons, two of them...wet and dry.

Today in Labor History November 28, 1843: The Kingdom of Hawaii was officially recognized by the United Kingdom and France as an independent nation. Consequently, the date is now known as Ka Lā Hui (Hawaiian Independence Day). The nation was formed in 1795, when the warrior chief Kamehameha the Great, of the independent island of Hawaiʻi, conquered and unified the independent islands of Oʻahu, Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi. The U.S. became its chief trading partner and “protector” to prevent other foreign powers from seizing control. In 1891, the Committee of Safety, led primarily by foreign nationals from the U.S., U.K. and Germany, and some dissident locals, overthrew Queen Liliʻuokalani. And in 1898, the U.S. annexed Hawaiʻi, making it a territory of the U.S. In 1993 Congress passed the Apology Resolution, acknowledging that the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii was by agents and citizens of the U.S. and that the Native Hawaiian people never relinquished their claims to sovereignty.

Whole breadfruit is often tossed into hot embers or an underground oven (imu) and cooked whole in this way. More modern preparations chop into quarters, core, peel, then steam. I generally cook them whole, whether roasted, baked or steamed, and peel and cut after. Ulu can be precooked and prepped, then used all sorts of ways later, in a variety of dishes. Keeps well, freezes well, can be turned into flour. #slowfood #indigenousfoods #hawaii #cooking

Let the stacking of starfruit begin. 😎
I have probably 200+ lbs of starfruit on two trees right now. I only picked what me and the teen could carry, not even 1/10 of what's ripe right now. I'll be able to harvest starfruit for the next month, there's every stage of ripeness on these trees, many still a month out. Funny thing about these trees, they are 100ft apart, but 20-30ft difference in elevation. The higher elevation one is at least a month behind ripening from the lower elevation one. they are all still green, while there aren't a ton of solid green ones left on the lower elevation one. 20-30 ft! #fruit #foodforest #tropical #homestead #hawaii

Time for a new #introduction

I play bass and electronic instruments, do some experimental video work, and live on O‘ahu, Hawai‘i.

Some things I've done that I love going on and on about: spent time in Bulgaria studying the concept of authenticity in relation to folk music, co-founded Community of Sound in Burlington Vermont, been an internationally ranked biathlon competitor (we won't say what that rank was though hahah).

My music often involves free improvisation, collaborations, and sometimes contemporary art music compositions.

My site is hand coded, has an RSS feed, and loads really fast.

Profile links to 10 links for latest projects/news etc, my website, my newsletter (subscribe if you like reading about sound, community, and culture), and direct artist support--which makes a tremendous difference in continuing to make creative work, thank you.

City & County of Honolulu v. Sunoco LP

Justia Opinion Summary
The Supreme Court affirmed the orders of the circuit court denying Defendants' motions to dismiss for lack of jurisdiction and for failure to state a claim in this action brought by the City and County of Honolulu and the Honolulu Board of Water Supply (collectively, Plaintiffs) against a number of oil and gas producers (collectively, Defendants), holding that there was no error.

Plaintiffs sued Defendants alleging public nuisance, private nuisance, strict liability failure to warn, negligent failure to warn, and trespass. Specifically, Plaintiffs alleged that Defendants engaged in a deceptive promotion campaign and misled the public about the dangers and environmental impact of using their fossil fuel products. Defendants filed a motion to dismiss, arguing, among other things, that Plaintiffs' claims were preempted by the Clean Air Act (CAA). The Supreme Court denied the motions, holding (1) Defendants were subject to specific jurisdiction in Hawai'i; (2) the CAA displaced federal common law governing interstate pollution damages suit, and following displacement, federal common law did and does not preempt state law; and (3) the CAA did not preempt Plaintiffs' claims. https://law.justia.com/cases/hawaii/supreme-court/2023/scap-22-0000429.html #climate #litigation #Hawaii #greenwashing #marketing #misinformation

if i ever start to think "wow i'm strong and can do so many things!", i'll just take a look at this red fire ant hauling away a dead mosquito that's multiple times its size.

seeing stuff like this helps keep me humble. it reminds me that whatever "tough work" i might do, tiny animals are outdoing me every day on the "heavy lifting" front.

every day, ants are doing remarkable feats of heavy lifting to bring home the (mosquito) bacon. relative to my own body size, i've certainly never hauled home a food that big!

(when i saw this scene, at first i thought it was a *team* of ants hauling it away...because i've seen them cooperate on moving things as large as a piece of cat kibble! like 15 of them had to cooperate on that job. cat kibble is a big prize for ants: it's a nugget of dense calories that they take apart bit by bit)

this is why i think of ants as the cleaners of the forest floor. if you drop ANYTHING organic & edible on the floor, they WILL haul it away. bit by bit. they keep the floor clean.)
