Next year I am going to teach maths in English at a French high school. It is an optional course some students choose to follow, part of the "European classes".
It's called «DNL» in French (Discipline Non Linguistique) and CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) in English.
The real goal is *not* to translate French courses in English, but rather to learn both mathematics and English.
I will probably toot a bit about that in the future, and I would be very pleased to discuss that with anyone doing the same kind of things (or someone just curious).

Why do all school cafeterias smell the same? Just walked through one today. Same smell as when I was in high school. And what the hell is that smell, anyway? If I opened a bag of food, and it smelled like that, I would assume it was bad, and throw it out.
It is common to talk "Wish I learned X instead of Y in high school!" these days. But I've used even the oddest high school bits in adulthood. We did mock ad campaigns in George Farrow's 7th grade ELP ("Enhanced Learning Program") class. I pitched a "car of the future" that was pretty much just the Knight Rider car. Kathleen Neville Driggers' yearbook class had me making ads for a taxidermy shop. What rhymes with taxidermy for ad copy? They wouldn't let me use germy or squirmy. I've loved The Avalanches for years and this gem of a #song got massively stuck in my head today.
Their musical style falls into "plunderphonics," meaning that they largely construct #music out of samples and this album is widely considered to be an iconic example of the genre.

My daughter (16yr) competed today in the US Rowing Northwest Regional Youth #Championships. Their #boat (4x Under17) placed 3rd, which qualifies them for Nationals in Florida. We’re not sure, though, if they will actually go. Logistics and costs would be difficult to bear and they’re mostly doing it for fun. Regardless, super cool. I had an overnight visit with a high school friend I haven’t seen in 10 years (and ~35 years before that). Her dog and I bonded this morning while listening to the birdsong filling her backyard. Drew this while on the plane heading home.
At the end of the flight I learned from my seat mate that she lives on the same dirt road in Vermont that I lived on 40-some years ago. And after more chitchat about my life there at the time and my housemate she realized that I was talking about one of her good friends, and whose son is best friends with the son she was flying out to visit in SF. I’ve been trying to get in touch with this old friend of mine. And now we can!

"A Sucker Bet"
As I was in high school there was an after school Industrial Arts class. It had a robot arm that picked up eggs. A smelly photo darkroom. I spent most of my time working on the script for an unfinished animated feature – "Attack of the Demonic Broccoli People!" At one point the teacher placed an egg in the corner and handed us a gallon can of paint. Said if we broke the egg with the can he'd clean up the mess. If we couldn't? We had to clean the sawdust covered shop classroom. It was a sucker bet. But isn't everything a sucker bet when you are in 11th grade? We quickly learned that the angle of the corner prevented the can from smashing the egg. But we kept trying. The can busted open. Splattered paint across the room. But we kept trying. Dozens of blows scuffed the wall. Dozens of impacts slowly rolled the egg out from the corner. Where what was left of the can smashed it on the paint covered floor. Education speaks of Learning Outcomes. Sometimes stubbornness is enough. #writing #FlashMemoir #florida #HighSchool #education

@SwiftOnSecurity #backstory I always just liked #computers and enjoy #helping people. Originally in #highschool I thought I'd like to be a #psychologist or something of the sorts. But the job security and money seemed more appealing than than saving actual lives unfortunately.
I had an interview with Amazon shortly before graduating #undergrad, and made it all the way to final round where they flew me out, paid for my meals, the whole thing. I didn't get it and this crushed me for a minute.
Even though I got my #bachelors degree right after high school in #cybersecurity, I started off in support because I just couldn't land my first cyber job directly. It was very disheartening.
I got promoted from my first job to a network #analysts (small/medium company but 16 sites). I earned my networking grit from this by designing a whole network for a new location from the ground up. Including the rack, phone systems, WAP's, #firewall, #network segmentation. I got tired of running actual cables however so I switch to their systems role and finished my time at that company after 1.5 years.
Following that I've had a couple jobs in the #finance industry (doing cyber). My primary focus has been PKI but I honestly hate it and I've been in it for almost 3 years.
Looking forward, I wanna do something more exciting and more challenging again. PKI isn't exciting enough for my #ADHD brain, too repetitive. I can't figure out where in security I want to move to next but I know it's not this.

I never did a hashtag heavy #introduction post - probably b/c my personal resume looks rather lame compared to the heavy hitters here. I teach #highschool #history in Indiana. I used to lead #teacher workshops. I've self-published a few #books. No advanced degrees, no international appearances, and no breakthrough research.
But I'm pithy and opinionated and ready to engage, baby. Bring it on.
