"Iran’s parliament has approved a Bill to impose heavier penalties on women who refuse to wear the mandatory Islamic headscarf in public and those who support them.
"The move came just days after the anniversary of the death of #MahsaAmini, a 22-year-old woman who had been detained by the so-called morality #police for violating the country’s dress code.
"Her death in custody ignited months of #protests in which many called for the overthrow of Iran’s theocracy.
"The 70-item Bill extends punishments to business owners who serve women not wearing the mandatory headscarf, known as the #hijab, and #activists who organise against it. Violators could face up to 10 years in prison if the offence occurs in an organised way.
"The Bill, which was approved by 152 politicians in Iran’s 290-seat parliament, requires ratification by the Guardian Council, a clerical body that serves as constitutional watchdog. It would take effect for a preliminary period of three years.
"The demonstrations sparked by Ms Amini’s death on September 16, 2022, died down early this year following a heavy crackdown on dissent in which more than 500 protesters were killed and around 22,000 detained.
"But many women continued to flaunt the rules on wearing the hijab, prompting a new campaign to enforce them over the summer.
"Iran’s clerical rulers view the hijab law as a key pillar of the Islamic Republic and blamed the protests on Western nations, without providing evidence.
"The protesters said they were motivated by anger over the dress code as well as what they see as the corruption and poor governance of the country’s ruling clerics."

In #Hearing and #AuditoryProcessing news, I went to an audiologist yesterday for an evaluation and trying out #HearingAids.
Yes, the test revealed that hearing aids definitely would help me with those lost high frequencies. And no, I can't afford them right now, not even in Spain. They still cost half a used car.
Too bad, because with all the sibilant sounds in #Spanish and my #Hijab, there was a huge improvement in my speech comprehension with the aids turned on.
Nonetheless, I'm going to look into more affordable brands and do a good amount of research. And if I can snag 0% financing, that will help, although I don't have regular pension-type income so I haven't yet been granted credit here in Spain. They don't give a fig about my US credit history, sigh.
Oh, and I've tried those cheap amplifiers. The sound they produced hurt my ears. No thanks.

Sara Khadem: Top Iran chess player exiled for refusing headscarf
When one of the world's most promising chess players, 25-year-old Sara Khadem, decided to play at an international tournament without her headscarf, in solidarity with the protest movement in Iran, she thought a warning would be the worst that would happen to her.
Instead, she can't return to Iran - there are arrest papers waiting for her, and she now lives in exile in southern Spain, with her husband and one-year-old son.
Sara Khadem said there was a slow evolution of her decision to play in the tournament in Kazakhstan in December last year without her headscarf. The contestants only wore them in front of the cameras, and she felt that was hypocritical. Given the sacrifices being made by the women and girls on the streets of Iran, some of them risking their lives, it was the least she could do, she said.

My wife and daughters proudly wear #hijab and I take time off regardless of work schedule for important religious events like #Ashara or #Eid. We do not compromise faith for others' sake.
