Along the bank of a river to our right beneath a deep blue October sky. The midday sun is creating a dazzling reflection just ahead of us on the lightly rippled waters of this rather placid stretch of river. The sky is clear, almost cloudless and blue. Top right, the sun is low in the sky, casting long shadows to our left. The afternoon sunlight is tinted gold. Two of its rays are visible, slanting down towards our left. We are walking a trail through a shallow ravine. The trail and the forest floor surrounding it are carpeted with freshly fallen brightly colored leaves. Many rocks and boulders are poking through the leaves, many fallen branches are laying on top. The sun has broken out on a stormy day and the downward sloping meadow before us is bathed in sunshine. Shreds of dissolving clouds stream past us. I went on my first challenging hike today since getting COVID. I hiked about 7 km through rough, steep terrain in the Hamilton escarpment area—a place called Smoky Hollow. I had to rest a few times, but think I did ok. I was sad when I saw signs warning of pesticide use. I was even sadder when I saw a big whitetail deer lying dead just off the trail. She looked untouched and didn’t stink, so must have died very recently. I can’t help but wonder if it’s related to the pesticides. We are climbing up a dry ravine between rather steep rocky slopes on our left and right. The ravine slopes upward ahead of us, but a bit less steeply. The floor and sides of the ravine are covered with many rocks and boulders, numerous freshly fallen golden leaves, also fallen tree branches and tree trucks. There are very few trees growing along the floor of the ravine and the bottom portions of its steep sides, but a thick forest covers the higher slopes and the head of the ravine in front of us. The trees are sporting mostly bright gold foliage with a sprinkling of orange leaves. The cloudless sky seen through the forest ahead of us is an intense light blue. The sunlight is shining towards us through the golden leaves, backlighting the rocks and tree trunks.

We are standing on the shore of a large lake. Below us are tufts of water grasses growing just offshore, a partially submerged rock and a partially submerged tree limb. To our left is a large leafy shrub. It is a calm evening, the lake surface is just slightly rippled. Across the lake is a low wooded ridge topped by a water tower. Beyond that a glimpse of a slightly higher ridge. Most of the sky is a deep blue. The recently set sun tints the horizon gold. We are standing beside a river in the middle of a bright forest of trees and shrubs mostly decked out in gold foliage, with some shades of orange and green mixed in. Beneath a clear whitewashed evening sky, we are standing in the shade atop a rocky cliff with patches of low, scrubby vegetation. The forest begins just to our right, these trees are also in shade. The sprawling valley several hundred feet below is dappled with gold-tinged evening sunshine and lengthening shadows. Near the far horizon is the city of New Haven. Past that are Long Island Sound and Long Island, New York, visible as blue gray and golden brown strips along that horizon. Many scattered buildings are visible in the valley below, but also wide swaths of forest, most of the trees sporting gold and orange fall foliage.

A brook and the lake into which it empties are surrounded by a leafless forest which is the only real indication in the picture that it is January. There is no snow on the ground or ice on or around the water. The brook is running over a shallow rocky bed, creating small rapids. We are walking down a dirt and gravel path, a large lake to our right, a forest to our left. Just below, the rock wall is liberally sprinkled with leafy green shrubs and small trees. Looking across the Grand Canyon. On our side of the canyon is an impressive naked rock tower. Across a deep crevice is a sheer rock wall of light reddish brown liberally sprinkled with small olive colored shrubs. At the top is a small plateau more densely covered with these shrubs. A butte rises from the center of this plateau, looking like a flattened cone. Its steep flanks feature more bare rock and fewer shrubs than the plateau.
