The photo in the previous post was taken at the new 315 Main location.
Today, the Harris County Administration building occupies the entire bottom half of this block.

Unfortunately fascism is on the rise in Germany again. So the hashtags
do not make much sense any longer. On the contrary, state organised killing of innocents will be very popular here again.

“Back in the ’60s and ’70s the white community was with us, got arrested with us, lost their job with us, sacrificed with us. On January 15th, I will be taking part alongside several other scholars in a symposium organized by Wilfrid Laurier University on legacies of racism and colonialism in Canadian universities. My talk will focus on the use in 1860 of funds held in trust for First Nations to bail out McGill College.

Trawling Data: The Panama Papers and our Knowledge Graph
(Crossposted from the XLab) The dataset for the Panama Papers is available here. #archaeology #histodons #dh Wouldn't it be great to examine it for people connected to the antiquities trade? In this post I try to do that, using our knowledge graph generated from the Trafficking Culture Encyclopedia. Behind that link you will find: Offshore Leaks (2013) Panama Papers (2016)

I shared this yesterday but I forgot the hashtags. So I'll post again today: I highly, highly recommend the Northwestern University Transportation Library Travel Grant. It's a great collection and a fantastic place to do research. I am happy to answer any questions that you might have about applying or doing research in the Transportation Library collections, which are fascinating.
8) THE OLD NURSE'S STORY, E. Gaskell (1852)
"I…heard no sound of little battering hands upon the window-glass, although the phantom child had seemed to put forth all its force; & although I had seen it wail & cry, no faintest touch of sound had fallen upon my ears" #GothicAdvent
#OTD in 1929: Gunmen burst into and robbed attendees of a #BronxNY testimonial dinner for Magistrate Albert #Vitale, including political leaders, gangsters and at least one police officer. The incident occurred just as public opinion was turning against #ProhibitionEra corruption.
That's quite a good read: "A Review of the Exhibit 'Imprimer! L’Europe de Gutenberg, 1450–1520' at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France" by Benjamin Bernard and Matthew McDonald.
It's a rare pleasure to be able to talk with a friend about their book, but I got to do that here with @robrakove. Rob's book, Days of Opportunity examines an understudied period of U.S.-Afghan relations, namely the 1920s through the 1970s and contextualizes the crises that have rocked Afghanistan since 1979. https://newbooksnetwork.com/days-of-opportunity

#history / All-Palestine Government
The All-Palestine Government of September/October 1948 was a messy affair: a last ditch effort by the Arab League and then de facto Palestinian national leader, Hajj Amin al-Husseini (AHE), to form a government, that will give some semblance of sovereignty and insert the Palestinian voice into the discussions about the future of Palestine at the UN General Assembly, which was about to discuss Bernadotte's recommendations (annex the Palestinian territories to Trans-Jordan).

501.BB Palestine/10–248: Circular telegram
502 years ago today, Queen (consort) Christina of Norway and Denmark (and, at times, Sweden) died, 59 years old. Her death was peaceful, but before that, she had lived through some _very_ interesting times.
In 1501, she was in Stockholm with her husband, King Hans/Johan/John, when Swedish magnates rose in open rebellion against him and his Nordic union. King John scarpered back to Denmark to raise an army. Queen Christina was left in charge of Stockholm castle. 1/*

Can any magnanimous #histodons help me get my hands on a chapter from an old edited volume?
Looking to read up on 19th century German beer riots but lack that handy institutional access.
Kristen Patterson writes beautifully about Emily Wilson’s new translation of the Iliad and the controversies surrounding it. She contends with the continuing appeal of Ancient Greece as an artifact of “past glory”, arriving (via LeGuin!!!) to the lasting meaning we find in these stories. Meaning which Wilson’s more accessible translation brings out.
Recommended morning read.

Happy Birthday to Walt Disney who originally planned Disney World's Epcot as a ‘community of tomorrow,' including:
> A single authority
> Banishment of cars
> No unemployment
When urged by a Disney designer to carry through on Walt’s broader civic-minded vision, Walt’s brother Roy, who had taken the reins of the company, answered, “Walt is dead.”
