In 19C NYC, everyone knew who to go to to end an unwanted pregnancy: the French-trained Madame Restell, who lived in a mansion on 5th Ave. In reality, Madame Restell was Ann Trow Lohman & she had never even been to France, but she managed to combine medical skill with her public persona to become tremendously wealthy, while providing a needed service. Madame Restell did her best to evade the authorities; then Anthony Comstock knocked on her door.

#OnThisDay in #history - in 1469, Cecily of York was born. Cecily was a daughter of Elizabeth Woodville and Edward IV, and her childhood was a time of instability, war, and personal tragedy. After 1485, her fortunes took a dramatic upturn as her sister, Elizabeth of York, was made queen upon her marriage to Henry VII. Cecily married John Welles, and they had a happy union until his death. She then married Thomas Kyme. She died in 1507, at the age of 38.

Twenty years ago, the Iraq War began. A war of choice, and a choice built on a false narrative about weapons of mass destruction. A war that caused over 400k deaths and for which no one in power in the US was ever held accountable.

I remember at the time thinking that the leaders who dragged America into this needless and costly war had experienced the Vietnam War. People are supposed to learn from history so as not to repeat it, but what happens when people refuse to do so? What does it take to turn lessons of the past into productive change in the future?

Me: I know one thing that never dies; the verdict over a dead man.

Random man: But we very often re-evaluat historical figures. Some, like Ignaz Semmelweiz, are posthumously vindicated, and some, like Walter Freeman, are posthumously vilified. There was a very different "verdict" on, say, Julius Caesar in the Imperial era than in the 19th cent. or today.
Twitter exchange part 2

Me: You don't recognise Hávamál, do you?
(Hávamál is an old Norse poem / collection of poems dating somewhere between 10th and q3th century OT.)

Random man: Not by name, but if you hum a few bars I'll try to follow along! (Seriously, no, I'm afraid I don't, but do I need to recognize the reference to disagree?)

#OnThisDay in #history - in 1568, Elizabeth Seymour died around age 50. She was a younger sister of Jane Seymour, a consort queen (3rd wife of Henry VIII). Not much is known about Elizabeth's early life. I guess I'm not surprised that there is virtually no observance that today is the 20th anniversary of the beginning of the #IraqWar. I've only seen one toot that references it (besides my own) and nothing on any other media. This important part of history has already gone down the memory hole. The trip shows up all over the 3/1916 issue of The Hindusthanee Student and in his book Young India.

I found an address—at a street number that didn’t exist. Friday, I rang the doorbell at a house on the block, and while they didn’t know about Rai, had all kinds of interesting things to say about local history.

Between 1851 and 1910 the ratio of men to women arriving in NYC from Ireland was roughly equal. Irish women often took jobs in domestic service, drawn by the provided housing, food, and clothing, which allowed them to send the bulk of their earnings back home to Ireland.

Han Feizi (c. 280-233 BC), was an influential Chinese philosopher of the Warring States period.

His works on statecraft provided a theoretical foundation for autocratic absolutism. They were admired by China's First Emperor, and the Second Emperor quoted from Han's essay “The Five Vermin”.

Yet the collapse of the Qin dynasty, as well as his own downfall, are emblematic of the arbitrary harshness of unrestrained personal rule.

#OnThisDay, 13 Mar 1990, Ertha Pascal-Trouillot becomes the provisional president of Haiti, the first woman to hold the role.

She had been the first woman to be a judge in Haiti and the first woman to sit on the Supreme Court. As provisional President, she organised the country’s first democratic elections since the 1950s.

I had no idea that a member of White Rose, the anti-Nazi resistance group, was still living. Her obituary (no paywall). #histodons #holocaust

#OnThisDay in #history -
in 1708, Queen Anne refused to give her royal assent to the Scottish Militia bill (which had passed both Houses, Commons and Lords). This effectively meant that the bill was vetoed and did not become law.
This was the last time that the royal prerogative of withholding assent was used. Anne's predecessor, William III, had vetoed 6 bills, but no British monarch after Anne did (for Britain - colonies were another matter).

"Han Feizi’s essays on statecraft were admired by the First Emperor, and the Second Emperor is said to have quoted from Han Feizi’s work 'The Five Vermin' ...

[He] provided a theoretical and philosophical foundation for autocratic absolutism. Yet the collapse of the Qin dynasty, as well as his own downfall, are emblematic of the arbitrary harshness of unrestrained personal rule."
