“It is widely held, and often repeated, that ancient Britons, and most especially the #Picts, painted or tattooed their bodies with Woad. We all know that, because depictions of the Iron Age or Roman period on television and film nearly always show the indigenous tribespeople painted in 'mystical' blue designs. It seems, however, that the evidence for Woad inspired body art is not as rock solid as one might have hoped.” #history

Thomas Cranmer was the first Protestant archbishop of Canterbury. He helped Henry VIII overthrow papal supremacy in England, annulled Henry’s marriage to Catherine, supported his marriage to Anne Boleyn and then helped him divorce her. Later he guided Edward VI in the Protestant direction and wrote the Forty-two Articles from which the Thirty-nine Articles of Anglican belief were derived. He was executed for heresy by Queen Mary I—Bloody Mary—on 21 March 1556.

In the US, 85+% of the explanation for that is racism. Anything that helps the lower class could help a black person, so the "working class conservative" wants it eliminated, as it could upset the racial caste system that keeps them, in their minds, above black people.

If you need evidence, just look to the history of US domestic policy the last ~80 years. (E.g. what happened with Johnson's Great Society, https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/26595572-american-maelstrom)

Fortunately, those days are gone but it was due to the thousands of Americans in the 20th century who donated their bodies to science.

Kristina, Queen of Sweden, was born in 1626. She is remembered as the most educated woman of the 17th century & ruled on her own terms.

Preferring the company of men, Kristina had no interest in traditionally feminine roles. She sometimes wore masculine clothing & focused on science, math & philosophy. She refused to marry (scandalous!) & became a patron of the arts.

Kristina decided to abdicate the throne in 1654. https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/abs/cambridge-descartes-lexicon/christina-queen-of-sweden-16261689/2E0538B2CC98623127368DE0ACE5DE02# #history #HistoryRemix

That they braved physical assaults just so people could travel the Interstate without being subject to segregation clearly would justify their use of the word, freedom.

I wrote a blog post reflection and shared a video this week after visiting the Dixonville Cemetery in Salisbury, North Carolina, as well as the Salisbury National Cemetery. I titled it, "Salisbury Slave Cemetery"

Cats of Yore

A lot of people seem to expect me to post pictures of St. Gertrude today since this is a cat account, but they're forgetting that this is also a history account and the association of Gertrude with cats is just a very recent internet thing! This wonderful lady is a photo from my collection. #CatsOfYore #Cat #Cats #History #stgertrudesday #stgertrude You can read more about Gertrude here: https://uscatholic.org/articles/202003/how-st-gertrude-of-nivelles-became-the-cat-lady-of-the-catholic-church/

Black and white photo of a stout middle aged woman with dark hair standing outside on a scrubby dead lawn. She is leaning forward and holding the forepaws of a shorthaired tabby cat so that it is “dancing” with her on its hind legs. She seems to be smiling at the cat and maybe talking to it.

The Irish may be known for their luck, but not when it comes to the Kennedy family.

Their dark family lore would be best explained as a traditional Gothic story.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day! 🍀

As one of the patron saints of Ireland, St. Patrick is said to have prayed away all snakes from Ireland. But did you know that the real St. Patrick wasn't Irish and never saw a snake in his lifetime?

Patrick’s own writings and early accounts of the saint’s career reveal many interesting details about his life in the fifth century.

Get to know the person behind the legend ⬇️

St. Patrick is Ireland’s main patron saint but did you know he’s 1 of 3?

A medieval historian makes the case for making Ireland’s only woman patron saint, St. Brigid, Ireland's main saint, who unlike Patrick was born in Ireland.

What Confederate sympathizers are so willing to ignore is that they cannot have the glory of plantation life without the horrors of slavery to provide the economic means to support it.
