Apropos of my last boost, I just watched the 2019 #documentary, #CarlLaemmle, about the founder of #UniversalPictures (and inventor of the #studio tour), who also established #Hollywood as a center of the #film business.
He employed several #women as #directors, was an early champion of depicting #race and politics realistically on screen, and helped more than 300 families leave #Nazi #Germany.
So there was one studio head then who wasn't a total scumbag like the rest, and now.

After watching both the theatrical cut and the 'Ulysses Cut' of Waterworld again, I gotta say, the extended version with those extra 40 minutes really amps up the world-building. The 'Ulysses Cut' adds so much more depth to the story, and Dennis Hopper's role as the one-eyed bad guy is absolutely amazing. The whole journey is just so captivating, and the extended narrative makes it even more awesome.

Honestly, I have tried balancing it out but I can’t seem to find any US shows I like. (I still like European shows, especially those from the Scandi countries and the UK. There is still edgy stuff to be found, though it’s dwindling, sadly.)
Here are my reasons:
They are often canceled before their time
Westworld, Prodigal Son, Hannibal … you know, shows that are really unique but do not have mass media appeal. I tend to favour these shows because they are really intense, and take brave steps in storytelling. Hollywood just isn’t doing that these days. Fortunately, there are still a few gems out there. I love The Last of Us, and am thinking of watching Silo and Foundation, but I’m afraid of their futures. Hollywood executives are just too keen on axing shows that “don’t perform”. It has made me really reluctant to invest in any US shows because it could be taken off the air without any proper closure to the story.
They are too violent and sexed up
Some, although good, left me with a sick feeling sometimes. For one, I found Game of Thrones‘ graphic rapes and violence so nauseating that I avoided watching it until it aired its second last season … only to be royally skewered by its abysmal series ending. Talk about seven years of TV flushed down the drain…
Their never-ending structure
I’ve never understood the appeal of the season after season of the same drama. Grey’s Anatomy is like, what? 15th season? Honestly, I don’t know because I’ve not kept track. KDramas and CDramas allow me to savour a story in 16 to 40 episodes. There’s closure and there’s no worry (usually) about it ending in a cliffhanger without proper closure. However, there is a worrying trend of telling stories in seasons these days. CDramas, Kdramas? Stop that!
Unadventurous storytelling
Hollywood TV and movies have gotten so formulaic (all those medical and cop shows and the 100th superhero drama). Old shows are revived with a new cast. Movies are endless franchises. Old movies are rebooted. How about telling something new??
And if they do find something that works, they rehash it until we viewers get so tired we just want to run away. (Marvel universe, I’m looking at you. Heck, I’m not even mildly intrigued by the new season of Loki, and I liked the first season.)
The US culture war talking points
These days, with US shows, I just have to brace myself to have good storytelling overshadowed by Western cultural agendas I just can’t relate to.
Yes, it is true. Not all of us relate to every cultural value held sacrosanct in the West. Even if we do speak English! Shocker!
I mean, shove your agenda in all you want, but please don’t sacrifice good storytelling or logic in the process, that’s all I’m asking for! And when stories get adapted, couldn’t you stay true to the spirit of the tale? (Okay this problem is as old as time. I still remember that awful Earthsea adaptation.) My heart broke when I watched Amazon Prime’s Lord of the Rings series, for one. No, no, my reason is not the whole “race thing” but the fact that they changed Galadriel so much from canon that I can’t stand her anymore.
And there’s just no good way to discuss this super ultra-sensitive topic because you’re shouted down by the Internet mobs who will brand you all kinds of nasty things before you can get a word out. And, no, I’m not going into this because like I said, I get misunderstood more often than naught and there’s just no good way to discuss it because I am so exhausted trying to explain my point of view.
The cancel culture around this topic is scary, and most people are cowered into not talking about it. For me, I am annoyed and very sad that people can be so mean over a topic that is meant to benefit minorities, oftentimes to the very minorities they say they are trying to defend. (rolls eyes)
The Last of Us, one of the few US shows I really love.Anyway, do you feel exhausted now? Well, this among many other reasons is why I think I am more inclined to watch Chinese dramas and Korean dramas these days because there’s just less drama on the fandom side of things. At least, on the English-speaking side (Korean and Chinese fandoms are notoriously, over-the-top mad with toxicity.)
I just want to discuss the good and bad of a show without the fear of stumbling into a cultural landmine I do not understand.
Other reasons why I prefer KDramas and Cdramas these days:
- It has a definite end to the story. No endless seasons until it is cancelled without proper closure
- Some may be formulaic but I can choose what trope to indulge in from a sea of choices and there’s always a gem that I will enjoy
- The intensity! While Western dramas tend to play it too safe these days, CDramas and KDramas really go places where it … well, hurts! Beloved characters die. Gets tortured. Endings are sad and tragic at times. There’s a lot of unpredictability and it’s difficult to know what’s going to happen next. If you have watched epic wuxia and xianxia you know what I mean.
- It’s over quickly! Especially CDramas. OMG, we are so spoiled in this realm. 24-episode dramas can be over in a matter of weeks. US or Western dramas tend to go on for years and years! (Though I was told that Indian dramas stretch decades lol.)
I do have my frustrations with CDramas, especially with how slapdash some of the filming, scriptwriting and acting can be, but I feel they are still brave enough to be creative storytellers, despite the nutty censorship, to surprise me.
While storytelling and acting problems exist in Cdrama land, for some reason I find it more bearable, and each time a new batch of shows gets released, I can’t wait to try them out!
And the most interesting thing is that some folks on Reddit commented that they’ve been avoiding Western shows due to the violence and sex. You know, I think I too am finding it a relief not to endure them during times when I am supposed to relax!
I remember when some shows were appointment viewing. My friends would gather around the TV, get some popcorn and just watch the show together and curse at it if need be. Remember Lost? Heroes? Man, those were the good old days.
I’m not sure if US shows (TV and movies) will get their mojo back. They seem afraid to try anything different or new. Streaming services and the merging of many major studios have changed the profit structure so much that Hollywood has become, well, a corporation that puts profits over creativity and originality. Not to say CDrams and KDramas don’t prioritise profits, but they sure seem to care about storytelling more.
Until Hollywood gets their act together, it is CDramas, KDramas and European shows for me.

Admittedly I said it in such an offhand way it was bound to cause confusion and misunderstandings (especially on Reddit!!), but I let down my guard in this subreddit because I assumed there were lots of Asian Redditors here who “get” what I’m trying to say.
Many did, but those who didn’t couldn’t stop harping about it until I got so tired trying to explain that, no, it’s not diversity I have a problem with, but the way said diversity was executed. I mean, seriously, if I had a problem with diversity in shows, I wouldn’t name The Expanse or Much Ado About Nothing (Kenneth Branagh’s movie) among some of my favourite shows!
