So here’s a surprise: The wireless water valve I forgot was Zigbee and not Z-Wave and had read was not supported by Home Assistant was picked up by the ZHA addon as a basic switch.

Unfortunately, I can’t actually configure the valve through Home Assistant. At least for now. I’ll have to see what my options are there.

But who knows, maybe I can get use out of it still.

I plan to move the remainder of my Zigbee devices (28 remaining) over to a direct connection, as there’s a plug-based mesh built on it.

As it turns out, I literally only have 1 Z-Wave device. The other one I thought was Z-Wave is actually Zigbee. It’s also a valve, which is apparently something not supported by Home Assistant directly (I set up a virtual switch in Hubitat).

I can’t lose the Hubitat, just yet. But I can get pretty close.

My new Zigbee+Z-Wave dongle arrived. Home Assistant picked it up immediately.

I copied over the remaining scenes from my Hue Bridge, then moved over the remaining lights. I get the feeling things are working WAY better with the devices going through this setup than through an intermediate hub and a weird API.

Still need to figure out Z-Wave, but that can wait. The Hue Bridge is officially retired.

#Tasmota #DHT22 Package von #Adroegg zur #Messung von #Luftfeuchtigkeit und #Temperatur

Ohje.

https://www.androegg.de/shop/tasmota-wifi-am2301-dht22-esp8266-esp-01-set/

Das Ergebnis landet via #MQTT und #HomeAssistant, der Part geht easy.

Die Aufschrift „AI-Cloud inside“ ist übrigens beim tatsächlichen Produkt nicht vorhanden. Wäre ja auch glatt gelogen.

Been a while without a Snarkhome update, so here comes a combo update for the Snarkhome, the Peppers and the Tweeds.

:fire_heart: 🌶️ The peppers are fine. Reaper went back outside after the storm and started 2 more fucking death peppers, bringing the total to like 9. Fishie and the Bonnets are all inside under new lights, finishing off their harvests. I even figured out where to dry the rest of them without accidentally less-lethalling the entire house.

🤖 In smarthome upgrade news, not so much an upgrade as an angry, cursing replacement of complete trash. Since the last update, I've switched out all of the SwitchBot plugs. Fucking 3 of them went horribly terribly fire-startingly wrong. And did I mention they have no warranty? So now all the grow stuff for the tent, hydrotower, peppers, etc is being controlled by "Third Reality" Zigbee switches instead. (https://amzn.to/3t2w0e0) They have been in for about a week and so far they Just Work. (Bonus, they haven't tried to burn down my house. Not even a little.)
🗣️ Since I needed a break from not burning down the house, I converted my notify actions to use https://github.com/nimroddolev/chime_tts for the common 'chime, talk, exit-chime' tasks. (Like when the Big Ear regains sight of the cat, it plays a fanfare instead of the normal attention chime before announcing his return and location.) There is some issue now where not all of the speakers go off reliably, but if I go back to targeting them in a group it works. :blobcatshrug: I'll just put the helper group back if it gets annoying.

:ms_weed: Finally, the Tweeds are growing nicely. I did get that back corner somewhat under control yesterday, but it is still extra tall over there. It happens. They'll get defoliated with their next (and first) feeding, probably tomorrow. (They are on fresh happy frog, so no need for food yet.) This lovely weather has the windows open, so my tent climate control is mad at me but so long as it keeps up I don't care.
🤞 We're on day 24 of flower and all is well. #growyourownmedicine #cannabis #growyourown #tweeds #switchbot #weed #snarkhome #espcam #esphome #piper #homeassistant #smarthome #switchbot #bigear #zigbee #homelab

The same plantcam view as always. The plants have started poking through the lattice, and quite a few bud sites are visible onscreen, including several tops in the foreground.
Per the overlays, the stir fan is off. The exhaust fan has been on 100% of the past 3 hours, attempting to lower the humidity. A large new card on the right shows a dehumidifier in "Drying" mode, with a state of 73% and a target of 70%.

I have a low-budget Wyze wifi camera that I kinda love, but the company kinda blows and their mobile app is growing increasingly bloated by the hour, trying to upsell me on shit I don't want.

I'm interested in getting it wired into #HomeAssistant but apparently having an open camera like that goes against their religion or business plan. Once upon a time they offered an alternate firmware that supplied RTSP access, but that's just a memory now.

Any suggestions? Looking for something small, like Wyze's cube, that will fit in the window, pointing outward, without looking too obvious. (Mine's white with white blinds behind it; not full-on camo, but not advertising itself, either.)

There we go - the technological #enshittification pandemic has also reached Philips #Hue.

Apparently they weren't making enough money by selling bulbs at $50/70 each. They'll now force you to log in through their app to the bridge too, or all of your bulbs will just stop working.

What this means, among the other things, is that tons of unofficial integrations that have been built over the years (phue being one of them, which I contributed to in the past, and is also used by Platypush to interact with Hue bridges) are also likely to stop working once you upgrade your bridge's firmware. Those integrations leverage the old push-the-pairing-button mechanism to pair with the client, but now in-app authentication through a registered account seems to be a requirement - and I definitely have better things to do with my time than reverse engineer again their shitty authentication flow and push a PR to phue.

Philips Hue (sorry, Signify B.V.; Philips has actually given up on building anything, they're just waiting for everybody who works there to retire) has joined the long wagon of companies that have realized that scooping up as much data as they can from their users (that probably includes at what time you usually wake up and go to sleep, from your bedroom lights patterns, or how often you go to the toilet) and selling it to data brokers provides a much steadier revenue stream than selling actual products that people want (even if those products are already quite pricey). And they don't care if fullfilling their new missions of being a mere data collector rather than a tech company means to literally break overnight the lights in the houses of millions of customers.

Of course, I was kind of prepared for this. I have #Platypush installed on a RPi with a Zigbee dongle and zigbee2mqtt, and it already does the job for a bunch of Hue, Ikea and other cheap Zigbee lights. That's all you need to make your own Zigbee bridge. #HomeAssistant and #OpenHAB are other popular options.

But it'll still take me a while to unpair a few tens of Hue devices in my house that are still connected to my Hue bridge (which I purchased a decade ago btw), and reconfigure tens of groups, scenes and automation routines on my self-managed bridge instead.

I used to love being a software engineer, building things and solving problems. Now being an engineer sucks, even as a hobby, and I don't feel anymore like this is what I want to do with my life.

It's not up to me to decide what to build anymore. It's up to Spotify killing their streaming libraries, Twitter or Reddit killing their API, Hue breaking their products if you don't log in through their app, YouTube coming up with ways to break youtube-dl on a daily basis, Google breaking your browser extensions, Red Hat and Docker turning suddenly hostile towards the FOSS community that made their fortunes, Messenger periodically logging out your alternative clients and locking your account, an increasing number of companies who insult the large community of unpaid volunteers that builds against their ecosystems as "free-riders" and make it their business mission to break their implementations, and the list could go on forever.

I'm no longer working with ecosystems built by companies who genuinely want to build good things that people want to use, who treat the community of developers around them as an asset rather than a liability, and even sport "don't be evil" among their core values. I'm working in an industry that continuously takes hostile stances against the FOSS community, unofficial clients, and anything that doesn't fit neatly into the quarterly vision for profitability outlined in the PowerPoint deck of a sociopath product manager with no tech background, and who couldn't care less if they are selling IoT devices or bricks. And I have to dodge these attacks on a daily basis, one line of code at the time, for the hundreds of integrations available in the projects I maintain or contribute to, just to keep things working without losing features overnight.

I wake up the morning thinking "how will tech companies decide to fuck me up today just to get one more byte about me to sell to data brokers, and which activities will I be forced to put aside in order to write some code that fixes the UX-breaking shitshow that one of their greedy managers has decided to put up today in an effort to beef up their quarterly bonus with a +1% uptick in revenue?"

Congratulations, motherfuckers. Your broken business models have broken tech for everyone.

Did #homeassistant just lose z-wave connectivity after the latest update for anyone else or just me? I suddenly lost like a hundred devices all at once. I feel like Obi Wan when that planet blew up. Great disturbance in the force over here.

I did take a look at ConBee II. It’s Zigbee only. There are other similar dongles, some of which are more highly rated.

I have a couple of Z-Wave devices, though. And if I take this stance of “ONLY THE LATEST WILL BE VIABLE” I’ll literally triple or quadruple the cost of this endeavor with the number of dongles I’d need for minimal gain. I found some highly rated Z-Wave dongles, as well.

So yeah, I think I’ll be fine with this for now.

The wireless dongle I order is a combo of Zigbee and Z-Wave. It has older radio chips. I can’t find any newer versions of it.

There are people who angrily demand you avoid this particular setup. Because it’s inferior to modern devices.

I’m running a Hubitat C-7. It’s also older radios. I think I’ll be fine replacing it laterally, but direct connected to Home Assistant.

From what I can see, RGBW isn’t working over the Maker API on the Hubitat. Hubitat, itself, works with RGBW, and Home Assistant is RGBW aware, but over Maker, it’s behaving as though it’s just RGB (no W).

This seems to be the main problem I’m facing.

Hopefully when the dongle arrives, this will solve the problem.

I started running into issues with integrations and automations with my Hue changes. So I got it…mostly functional and went to bed.

I think the issue is somewhere in the chain of Hubitat -> Maker API -> Home Assistant. The Hubitat has no problem controlling things. Home Assistant seems to have the bits to support it. But there’s communication problems, or something, in between.

Purchased a dongle to possibly move connections directly to the HA system.

#Deye #Sun #M60 mittels #MQTT in #HomeAssistant einbinden?

@neil I pull down the green screen, which triggers an "opening" sensor (like a window/door) and automatically activates the scene (or push the "in conference" button when I'm doing audio only).
I've not found any truly reliable way of triggering this, and I mostly want it triggered *before* the actual call (lighting, music stopping, phone being switched to DND, air purifier power limiting, etc).
This is all easily orchestrated via #HomeAssistant.

Wrote to Philips to protest the planned requirement of a cloud account to use the bridge and connected lights. Got this response:

"As the features we develop grow, so does the need for more advanced security. To keep your accounts and products secure and ensure you get the most out of your system, you’ll need to create a Philips Hue account soon.

We want to reassure you that your system will still work without an internet connection. After creating an account, your data will not be sold to any third parties, and you will only receive marketing communications based on your device and account preferences."

If it works without an Internet connection, how the fuck can the account bring "advanced security" to the table...

• finally set up an Aqara FP2, a presence sensor using mmWave radar; this is now in charge of turning my kitchen lights on and off as we come and go

• reflashed a Sonoff ZigBee Dongle-E to act as a router/range extender for my ZigBee network, so I can get better coverage on the second floor, where I plan to move bulbs from Hue to Home Assistant.

Yay - good to hear. A few options for hardware that integrates between the panel and the HA system. Nice.

Now the temps are falling here in Virginia, we've started to open the windows. Decided to put sensors on them so I can set up some #HomeAssistant automations about open windows, etc.

I had some on hand but need to buy a few more to complete the project and this is a good case study on why having both #zigbee and #zwave allows you to pick the best device for a specific project.

#Aqara door/window sensors are $17.99 on Amazon.

#Zooz door/window sensors are $22.95 on Amazon.

I have Ultraloq U-BOLT-PRO-ZWAVE locks. They're great locks, and they work great in #Homeassistant.

The only minor complaint is our back door isn't covered by a canopy or porch. When it rains, or the humidity is especially high in the mornings, the lock gets wet and starts to beep as if someone is trying to use the fingerprint sensor. I can't really blame Ultraloq for that, I think. I wish they made a cover that would fit over it and could be opened/closed for using the fingerprint sensor.

Rockchip statt Raspi: Home-Assistant-Server für Einsteiger

Home Assistant schafft eine Alternative zur Raspi-Box "Yellow". Die "Green"-Box verwendet einen Rockchip-Prozessor und ist günstiger.

@ottaross I run it on an 8 GB Pi 4. I’m only using 1.3 GB of memory, so the 4 GB model may be completely fine. I think an SSD is a good idea.

Not sure if you already have various dongles but the #HomeAssistant yellow might be a good option.

@homeassistant for those asking: buy a Sonoff Zigbee controller. When it’s plugged into your HA machine you can then add your Hue Zigbee devices in the normal HA integration page.

You’ll have to repair them all though, which sucks.

Think I'm going to buy a new #RaspberryPi 4B (8GB) to run #HomeAssistant.

Any HA enthusiasts have insight if that's a good platform for it? Does it run fine on a lesser RPi?

@M4rkF I’ve used strips & other led lights like this with 4 or 5 wires (rgb + power or rgbw + power) all the time.

Cut the wires from the controller they come with and solder them to a esp32 dev kit, then use #esphome to bring them into #homeassistant

It’s a little more work, but it’s all local control once it’s done

I'm looking for multi-color LED tape lights that I can integrate into #homeassistant.
Anyone had any success with something like this? https://a.co/d/92hO0LL

I'm thinking this *should* work with localtuya or even flashing tasmota if necessary, but if anyone has had any success, I'd love to hear from you.

For over a decade Philips Hue offered lights that work without sharing your data to the cloud. This is changing soon and we need your help to make some noise to convince them to revert this decision.

These -- somehow -- are full blown computers. M5Stack Atom Lites:

• 240 MHz dual-core processors, 520 KB SRAM, 4 MB flash
• USB type-C for power
• Wifi and Bluetooth onboard
• one physical button built into the body
• 8 GPIO pins w/ programmability
• running ESPHome, controller software with OTA programmability

...and one of them also has a 5x5 RGB LED matrix display.

They also have a wide range of snap-on sensor accessories, like temperature, humidity, air quality, cameras, ...

They cost £9 and £15.

Bloody hell!

(Yes, these are for #homeassistant stuff.)

Two tiny computers on my outstretched palm. They measure 24mm x 24 mm.

Question for #HomeAssistant and #Zigbee peeps: I have two lights in my home that are tunable white spectrum, but Home Assistant shows the whole RGB interface for.

Is there a simple way to tell Home Assistant, "no, these are actually just tunable white"?

This is interesting.

2 days ago #HomeAssistant landed a PR that added an exception to its #licensing language stating that "this logo is not released under the CC license. All rights reserved."

The whole repo, however, remains under CC-BY-NC-SA as per its LICENSE.md file.

Can you do a carve-out like that?

Would anyone recomment an IP #camera that will work purely locally, with no cloud etc connections, available in EU (PL)? Most likely will be inside, though ones able to survive outdoors are appreciated as well. Ideally to be connected with #HomeAssistant and/or #Frigate (once I get around to setting that up 😅 ) #HomeAutomation

I was down to one set of lights that didn’t work with #HomeAssistant: the Cync wafer lights in my kitchen. I installed these a few months ago, RIGHT before going down the Home Assistant rabbit hole, and wow is Cync a dumpster fire.

Pairing them was a huge pain, they don’t work with anything except Google, and even that integration is subpar (their scenes show in the Home app, but don’t work!).

Today I replaced one with a Zigbee wafer light as an experiment, and so far, so good! 🤞

I've used #HomeAssistant for a while, but when I start over, after moving house, I think I should start documenting each decision I make. There have been too many times I've tried something only to revisit the same issue a few weeks later.

To everyone following my Gonk adventures. Inside this little fella is a @Raspberry_Pi PicoW, a mmWave presence sensor from @seeedstudio , a small mono OLED screen, a pair of green LEDs and a single Neopixel. The whole arrangement is hooked up to #homeassistant using the MiniMQTT library in @circuitpython (#CircuitPython also controls all the hardware too).
