Things I've been up to:
🔹Closing out the garden for the year, canning 10 jars of tomatoes and 16 jars of carrots 🍅🍅🥕🥕🥕🥕
🔹Having fires in my new fireplace basically every day 🔥
🔹Playing Godtear with the minis I painted

Ulu (breadfruit) Roasted whole, in 400°F oven for 1.5 hrs. with a tray of water under it. All off the same tree, but at different stages of development. The one with the foil is a ripe/sweet one that's good with butter and brown sugar. The others are mature/savory ones that can be used like potatoes, only more nutritious. 🌱 #cooking #farmtoface #homegrown #homestead #tropics #foodforest

Another rack of cuban red bananas. A few of them split, bc of the amount of rain we got after a "dry" spell, so started ripening a bit too fast. I cut them down before the rats found them. Look closely, you can see a couple split, but also a "conjoined twin" banana. Almost all of my Cavendish variety racks have one. They are all clones, so it makes sense they'd all have similar rack patterns.

Let the stacking of starfruit begin. 😎
I have probably 200+ lbs of starfruit on two trees right now. I only picked what me and the teen could carry, not even 1/10 of what's ripe right now. I'll be able to harvest starfruit for the next month, there's every stage of ripeness on these trees, many still a month out. Funny thing about these trees, they are 100ft apart, but 20-30ft difference in elevation. The higher elevation one is at least a month behind ripening from the lower elevation one. they are all still green, while there aren't a ton of solid green ones left on the lower elevation one. 20-30 ft! #fruit #foodforest #tropical #homestead #hawaii

it’s been fascinating (horrifying) learning about the history of modern agriculture as a result of the Green Revolution: a movement fuelled by war and violent colonialism under the guise of humanitarianism. conventional pesticide and fertilizer essentially have their roots in nazi germany and before WWI, all food grown was organic.

the Green Revolution is ongoing and promotes the overexploitation and domination of the natural work and its resources, human workers and their communities, and non-human animals. it believes that soil, plants, and animals are merely non-living machines that require massive external inputs (e.g. fertilizer, pesticide, herbicide, and manure). it has dreadful effects on the environment and creates food insecurity in the Global South to line the pockets of billionaires in the global north (like bill gates whose seemingly innocent mission to end world hunger is a corporate and colonial mission first and foremost). seeds are proprietary, farmers have no control of what they’re growing or what they’ve grown, and farms are large-scale to compete on the global market (vs. nurturing local communities who need food). it’s shocking: the largest portion of those who are food insecure are the farmers growing the food. the system is beyond broken.

there is a solution to this horror: agroecology and food sovereignty. they promote small-scale community farms that work with the natural world, not against it. they directly oppose over-extraction and exploitation, instead prioritizing growing with few or no external inputs and growing only what is needed to nurture their communities. they promote seed sharing and strive to cut out the middleman when selling food, instead opting for farmer’s markets and CSAs. while agroecology isn’t inherently vegan, veganic farming fits beautifully within its framework and there is a growing veganic agroecology movement which has the potential to not only help local communities across the globe thrive, but save the world.

animal and conventional agriculture is killing us all through mass environmental destruction, pollution, natural resource depletion, nutrient-scarce, contaminated and disease-causing food, a profit over live itself ideology, and zoonotic disease affecting not only us but greater animal biodiversity (see avian flu). in general, food today has far less nutrients than food grown a hundred years ago.

a better world is possible, with less hunger at far less expense to living beings and the planet we call home. it starts on our plates but requires our advocacy at the grassroots and government level.

So I spent my evening digging up the water line that runs from our well to my mom's house so I could put in a frost free spigot to water her #chickens with.

There's no municipal water up here, so our property has a well, with about a quarter mile of water line that runs the length of it to supply running water to my house, my brother's house and my mom's house.

The longest part was just finding the line. We buried it 20 years ago so we couldn't remember "exactly" where it was.

Tomorrow probably we'll tarp the roof, and I I will probably tuck tarps over the exposed ends of the bales so I don't have to put up/take down tarps on the sides for the final load. I'll see what I can/need to do.

But what an accomplishment. A solid roof for my hay!

We started our big fire mitigation project today. The first thing was the huge danger tree poplar in the front that shades the house (bad for solar panels should we decide to get some). It lost huge missiles during wind storms and was starting to die from the inside.
It sucks to take down trees that still have green on them, but the hard decisions have to be made. A few other live trees are going to come down as well, all with exposed roots on the hillside leaning toward the house. Some limbing and brushing around the power lines will finish it for this year. It's a lot of work but we are keeping all the wood chips for the hen house and gardens. All the logs will be either cut up to dry for firewood or used in hügelkultur beds or raised beds for the gardens.
We might not be able to stop a wildfire if one comes this way next summer but at least we can try to do as much as we are able to reduce the risk.

Today in Labor History September 30, 1892: In the wake of the Homestead Steel Strike, union leaders were prosecuted for the crime of treason for the first time in U.S. history. Henry C. Frick, chairman of the Carnegie Steel Company, convinced the chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to issue warrants for the arrests of every member of the advisory board of the striking steel union for treason against the state. The 29 strike leaders were ultimately charged with plotting "to incite insurrection, rebellion & war against the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania." During the strike, Pinkerton detectives killed seven workers, who were protesting wage cuts of 18-26%. Alexander Berkman tried to assassinate Frick, but failed, and spent many years in prison. He wrote about his imprisonment, and about anarchism, in his “Prison Memoirs of an Anarchist,” published by Emma Goldman’s Mother Earth Press.

i didn't even ask why she was on her roof at 8am, but her extender ladder was not locked properly. she only noticed it when she was coming down. if she had tried to step onto it, the extender part would just slide down.

anyway, all was fine. i'm glad i picked up her call!

the headline says "$179K Yurt With Private Lava Tube Seeks Off-Grid Buyer in Hawaii"

this is in my area, so i feel qualified to fact check some of what's going on here.

1) "There is no power system in place." you read that right: for $179k, you do *not* get electricity. you would have to set that up yourself.

2) "707-square-foot space" the photos look nice, but this is smaller than many apartments

3) “It has a composting toilet that is included with the property,” not a dealbreaker for me, but if you like your poops to be carried away by water, you will have to install that yourself. but you may have some difficulty doing so because...

4) “In 2019, the seller was going to put in a cesspool to eliminate the composting toilet and convert it into more conventional plumbing,” she explains. “But the backhoe operator got about six feet down and came upon the lava cavern." so yea, even if you wanted to put in a toilet, ya can't. they already tried.

5) “It is not financeable and needs to be a cash sale.” so i hope you have $179k on hand!

6) "most of the roads are paved" in the subdivision. this may be the most outrageous part of the whole listing. friends, most of the roads in Fern Acres are not paved. the roads are in fact, very bad.

7) "The interior features bamboo furniture from Bali." i'm sure the interior was very expensive to do and it looks beautiful, but interiors are like the decorations on an xmas tree. the tree is still the main attraction, and even the most beautiful ornaments can't "save" a half-dead tree with half its branches missing.

8) "there’s a separate lava-rock shower house for bathing." the bath house does look very pretty, but again: ornaments on the tree.

9) the final issue is more of my own perspective, but basically i think that yurts are the opposite of the housing design appropriate to our area. yurts are made for extremely cold & windy places. here in the wet tropics, they become extremely hot & allow no way for air to flow (which is the primary way people stay cool). air flow is the name of the game around here. i like to take my cues from traditional building designs in the area, so here on the island it'll look something like the A-frame structure here: https://www.recreation.gov/camping/gateways/13976. as you can see, it has maximum airflow.

in conclusion, there are no shortcuts. at our place, we bought a vacant lot & built our own shack. it does not look beautiful in photos. but i do live with the plants, i breathe fresh air, water falls from the sky, & i don't have a big mortgage to pay. there is no perfect place. it's all tradeoffs. for me, i'd rather have the fundamentals in place & have an "ugly" interior that i can fix up as i go. others might have different preferences. but definitely do not pay $179k cash for this yurt in the jungle.

When I went out tonight to close the chicken house gate, the air smelled different than it has for so long- damp, earthy, fecund.. autumn-like. The sense of calm descends as the days move into September and the dark falls a bit quicker each evening. The grass and leaves are wet with dew in the mornings now. We've had rain in my area, enough to lessen the fire risk. It almost feels "normal". Of course it's not and the thoughts of coming summers are sinister and heavy. But for now, the land is peaceful here as we wait for what winter will bring.

living with the land requires a certain level of calm when you find a huge live cane toad floating in one of your water buckets (toad juice!!!). or when you find a slug at the bottom of your veggie bowl. that bowl gets put in a tub every day at dusk so slugs don't get in, & yet!

i'm looking for some advice on an MPPT charge controller solar setup that runs 1 big fat inverter & a 24V battery bank.

i'm helping a friend replace a busted charge controller (midnite solar classic: https://www.midnitesolar.com/productPhoto.php?product_ID=257&productCat_ID=21&sortOrder=2&act=p) with a different model that might work (midnite solar kid: https://www.midnitesolar.com/productPhoto.php?product_ID=530).

with the broken charge controller, the inverter & battery bank were wired together and that just all plugged into the "output" part of the controller.

with the new one, there are "input", "load", & "battery" plugs. but the inverter is not allowed to be plugged into the "load" directly.

i could wire up the inverter to only be connected to the batteries, but then i have nothing on "load" & the controller doesn't turn on. can i put just like..an LED on the load? just to complete the circuit?

the manual for the new controller says that if i want to run an inverter, i should put a "relay" between the "load" & the inverter, but it doesn't say what kind or anything else. there are so many kinds of relays so how do i know which one i need?

anyway, this is not my system. i am helping a friend who is stuck with a legacy system that was created by an evil nerd who is no longer allowed back at the property. both of us live in the boonies & no one wants to service this bootleg system (not like we have the $ to fund such an extravagance). so yea, any help or advice would be most appreciated.

(btw, according to customer support, on the old charge controller, "The PV Voltage sensor circuit is damaged and will need to be repaired." they want us to pay $ to send it back to them, then pay $ again to get it repaired. but i wonder: is this something i can hack or bypass myself?)

Garlic harvest time: how to store?

We have a lot of hardneck garlic this year, and no root cellar yet. Last year the surplus bulbs were processed into dehydrated chips, which stored really well and are useful in wet dishes where a mouthful of garlic works. However it is a lot of prep and a lot of energy to dry even though we have a skookum dehydrator.

This year we are machine-mincing the surplus with olive oil and salt, freezing into pucks in muffin tins, then vacuum packing. This will use less energy (since we run a deep freeze anyway) and be a great product still in eight months.

I spend a lot of time finding and testing recipes to sell online, at farmer's markets, and at the roadside stand I set up on my family's property in the summer.

That is in addition to other things I sell, like stickers and candles.

What are some things you would stop by and check out and consider buying, knowing it was created and produced locally?

I've already got vegetables down, anything excess from my garden I turn around and sell or give away. We also sell our chicken's eggs when we have an abundance.

But what about hot sauces? Baked goods? Home goods you could be interested in? Jewelry?

I don't intend to make a full time job out of selling these items, unless that is somehow how it pans out. Plus, being in Wisconsin, I can't just have a roadside stand up all year.

Anyone got ideas for me?

Today in Labor History July 2, 1892: Carnegie Steel locked out workers at its Homestead, PA, plant. The lockout culminated in a major battle between strikers and Pinkerton security agents on July 6. Determined to keep the plant closed and inoperable by scabs, the strikers formed military units that patrolled the grounds around the plant, and the Monongahela River in boats, to prevent access by strikebreakers and their Pinkerton guards. On the night of July 5, Pinkertons, armed with Winchester rifles, attempted to cross the river. Reports conflict as to which side fired first, but a gun battle ensued. Both sides suffered numerous deaths and injuries. Women also participated in the action. In the end, the Pinkertons gave up and surrendered. However, the governor called in the state militia, which quickly displaced the picketers and allowed the scabs in, thus ending the strike. In the wake of the bloody strike, Alexander Berkman, an anarchist, tried to assassinate Henry Clay Frick, Carnegie’s agent at Homestead.

K. Friedman wrote about the strike in “By Bread Alone” (1901). Friedman was a Chicago socialist, settlement-house worker and journalist. His novel was an early example of the transformation in socialist fiction from "utopian" to "scientific" socialism. More recently, Trilby Busch wrote about the strike in her novel, “Darkness Visible” (2012).

for no reason, tonight i'm once again thinking about the "russian cyberfarm." i've seen this video so many times & i *still* think it's funny. i was born in the former soviet union, and this is about as accurate a representation as you're gonna get 😂

also, i think anyone with a #farm or #homestead or #offgrid will recognize a lot of the situations portrayed...

🔵Migrating account.🔵 After most of my adult life in South Carolina, I landed in Arizona. 🤔 After a satisfying 6mos on home.social, I landed here because it's closing down. I boosted a few of my old posts, just so as not to be a blank account. As an eclectic poster, I can't promise any exact ratios, but followers will likely see posts to do with:

What do you do when confronted with the 1923 version of a clickbait headline?

Well, you click it, of course.

And keep clicking and clicking and clicking, because this Pittsburgh story had nothing to do with the headline, but was every bit as compelling in its own way.

#introduction thread (boosts appreciated!)

I'm a kinky cis femme who is old enough to be considered an "Elder Millenial" (aka #xennial). She/her pronouns are preferred, but they/them and other neutral pronouns are also fine for referring to me.

I'm in a long term #monogamish relationship with the #kinky and handsome snack of a #DaddyDom, @Secondfloor.

In 2021, #Secondfloor and I bought some very neglected farmland and moved from Houston to Western CO to start a #homestead. Our first year in CO was pretty rough & we were basically glamping in an empty workshop with no water source, no plumbing, etc. We dug a well, built a bunch of stuff, and then ended up buying our neighbor's land + home which doubled the size of our farm but gave us better infrastructure thus freeing up time for me to start #smutposting again. 🥰

Hey does anyone on here have recommendations for plans for a chicken coop & enclosure?

We're going to build a new chicken palace and get some new laying hens this spring.

Boosts welcome! no idea what tags to use for this though. #chickens #farm #homestead #backyardChickens

Another great photo by a photographer who is now unknown. A homestead on the north fork of Harvey Creek in Stevens County, Washington. Mae Rodenbough and her parents, Sarah and Nathan Young are pictured. 1880s-1890s.

A wise person advised us to post our bio as an #introduction. So here we are!

Solace is a new homesteading effort being taken on by a married couple on just over 5 acres in Southern Quebec, Canada.

In April of 2022 it was just forest and a creek. Now it is forest, a creek, and a tiny house!

Follow us for pictures, stories, and the experiences of starting from raw forest and building towards a semi-modern lifestyle while working in concert with the nature around us.

Home. It's where I feel the most comfortable. I live with a sensory processing disorder which greatly affects my sense of smell. It's hard to be in a world filled with perfume, laundry detergent and glade plug ins. Everything is 100x stronger to me. It's overwhelming! My home is blessedly unscented... For today's theme of thankfulness, I really am glad for the incredible view in my new front yard--even if a lot of it is a construction bomb zone for now. Mother Nature's daily light show is amazing.

Storm clouds hover inside a golden sunset over the Chiricahua Mountains in eastern Arizona. A white truck is dimly visible in the foreground.
