Old short story written in the USA. A horror story about a woman who appears to be in need of assistance from others - but anyone who helps her get "addicted" to helping her, and burn themselves out doing so, eventually dying. It's told from the perspective of her next door neighbor, an old woman.

Humanity had an almost reflexive desire to try and remember the Great Darkness. Thus, hypnoregression was often used to access those memories. However, this lead to a form of psychosis called Psychocanitia - an insanity so intense it turns the patient's hair white. These sufferers came to be known as White Wigs, pejoratively.
