#hospital

While we were driving past Surrey Memorial Hospital in #BritishColumbia today, it looks as though there was a television interview happening.

This #hospital is overwhelmed, today they promised expansion but doesn’t make the immediate issue go away, one would think.

Another #hospital #coffee from #Costa. I'm losing beans as their system isn't working :( But can't think of a way to spend time in hospital that isn't awkwardly walking around the corridors. Also little accident from the table being wobbly.

Having attended the Day Surgery Unit at Castle Hill Hospital (Cottingham) yesterday, I have only praise & admiration for all the staff there. Doctors, nurses, aneasthetists, admin - everyone was cheery, helpful & very pleasant. The operation went smoothly. I can't fault anything. I'm at home recovering (well). No GGB gigs until the middle of July.

A new ER reality — a drop in standards of care

“At our #hospital in Nanaimo, I have begun calling these admissions IOU patients: Inpatients Orphaned and Unattached. As #emergency #physicians we believe we owe these patients a far higher standard of care than the cursory knowledge of their presence in our ER and our commitment to intervene if their blood pressure crashes or their #heart stops.”
#iouPatient #HealthCare #er #ed #Health
https://www.timescolonist.com/opinion/comment-a-new-er-reality-mdash-a-drop-in-standards-of-care-7093246

Text Shot: These patients, who have become sick enough to require in-hospital care, languish in our already-overcrowded ED hallways, frequently being handed from one emergency doctor to the next, so at least some physician knows vaguely about their existence but no one is specifically directly managing their in-patient care.

This “new solution” is allowed to go on until a facility’s in-patient census falls below a certain threshold and a hospitalist can be assigned to assume in-patient coverage. This is unacceptable, unkind and unsafe.

Remember when I wrote how the hospital I took my mom to on Weds allowed people to enter the ER maskless?

She and I were both masked up. Then they took her vitals and her temperature by mouth and removed her mask to do that. She was in a hallway on a gurney beside lots of other sick and injured people on gurneys.

The #hospital irresponsibly allowed some maskless person to give my mom, who was just diagnosed last week with advanced pancreatic #cancer, #COVID!

I tested negative just now. 😷

Utah’s Secretive Medical Malpractice Panels Make It Even Harder to Sue Providers

Despite no data showing it’s effective, Utahns who have been hurt by a health care worker — including sexual assault victims — have been forced by law to spend time, money and energy telling their story to a panel who decides if their lawsuit has merit.

Shocked, I’m shocked!

“Every #hospital in America promises to protect the privacy of its patients and the details of their medical care. And almost every one of them uses sophisticated data tools to track and share the personal information of visitors…

…99% of U.S. hospitals employed online data trackers…that transmitted visitors’ information to a broad network of outside parties, including major technology companies, data brokers, and private equity firms.”

Another report on the #NHS telling us what (surely) we knew already (which doesn't make the analysis any less true, of course).

The proliferation of targets across the #HealthService makes little positive difference but skews medical/clinical priorities; better to have broader national health priorities...

and so; prevention is better than cure; the #NHS needs to refocus 'upstream' to keep people out of #hospital in the first place.

But is anything going to change?

Idaho hospital to stop delivering babies as doctors flee over abortion ban
Near-total ban on abortions is driving doctors away, hospital says, leading to lack of nearby labor and delivery care for thousands

An Idaho hospital has planned to stop delivering babies, with the medical center’s managers citing increasing criminalization of physicians and the inability to retain pediatricians as major reasons.

Bonner General Health, the only hospital in Sandpoint, in the north-west of the state, announced on Friday it would no longer provide labor, delivery and a host of other obstetrical services.

The more than 9,000 residents of Sandpoint will now forced to drive 46 miles for the nearest labor and delivery care, the Idaho Capital Sun reported.

In a statement, the hospital said the decision to eliminate the obstetrics unit stemmed from the “political climate” in Idaho.

Continued Hospital Photo series from the family scans I am doing. Middlesex Hospital, New Jersey, USA.

I will tag all photos I'm scanning with #NDBProject01 if interested in seeing them all. I'll be bouncing around with photos from the late 1800s, some in USA, some in India (mostly NE Tribal areas), and a very few in China.

#History #Hospital #OldPhotos #1926 #NewJersey #surgery

Sepia photograph. Taken approximately 1926. An operating room. The room is all white tiles on the walls. Plain cabinets. An old-fashioned operating table in the middle of the room. Some round tin things (I have no idea what they are) against the far wall. A shelf with bottles on it.

My photo scanning project. Approximately 1926. Middlesex Hospital, New Jersey USA, where Hubby's grandmother trained as nurse before going to NE India. I have often wondered if hospitals might be interested in having old photographs of their earlier years, or what kind of historical society might want them. I have no idea who these people are, but clearly there was a photoshoot at the hospital given the set of similar photos I have.

#OldPhotos #NewJersey #1926 #Hospital #History #NDBProject01

Sepia photo. Taken around 1926. An old fashioned ambulance with the name Middlesex Hospital on it, parked in front of a building with the ambulance driver in the seat. Standing in front of the ambulance are four doctors (I presume) all dressed in white posing rather stiffly, with their arms behind their backs.

I also passed by a #PicketLine of #Striking #Nurses outside a small local community #hospital and so rang my bell and gave them a wave.

Coming to you live from the ER. Had another episode of SVT (super ventricular tachycardia, heart 160 BPM at rest for 30min), called ambulance, nearly fainted while the guys got me ready to go, threw up over side of gurney, immediately felt fine (vagal nerve stimulation), BP still low so EMTs talked me into going to hosp. BP good now, just waiting to be set free. Bullet dodged again. (Hospital crowded, hanging out by nurses’ station) #SVT #ChronicIllness #Hospital

A shot over the end of Kara’s gurney. You see her feet clad in thick woolen socks in the foreground, ankles crossed, and the backs of several nurses at their computers in the middle distance. A hospital hallway stretches out into the background.

Calling all healthcare professionals...

Are you aware that many people, especially those who are Autistic or otherwise neurodivergent, have sensory processing differences?

They (we) will often experience the sensory world differently, meaning they might have much more intense or much less intense experiences and reactions to sensory input from the environment than others.

This can be amazing in lots of ways (joy from vibrant colours, lovely intense smells from flowers that others don't experience...)

But it can also be very challenging in other ways (for example feeling nauseous from others' perfume, pain from bright florescent lights, pain and high anxiety from loud beeping machines or low electricity hums).

If you work in or run a clinic, ward or department with in or outpatients, chances are many will experience some level of discomfort from the sensory environment there.

Many (but not all) of these aspects can be adapted to be pleasant for everyone.
Light bulbs could be changed to be less bright, or dimmed, quiet rooms offered where possible, ear plugs/headphones offered.

You could ask each person if there are any aspects of the clinic/ward environment that is bothering them, and see what can be done about it.

Sometimes just listening and acknowledging there's even a problem is validating and reassuring.
