Were I to file the serial numbers off statements made by China's information agencies or by #corporate #HR or #PR offices, you would have incredible difficulties distinguishing between them. All the rhetoric about "working together" for "something greater" is shared. The strict hierarchy (whether explicit or implicit in both cases) is present. The toadies going to their knees to service the egos of those above them in the hierarchy are indistinguishable.

Регулярно мы видим в интернетах множество размышлений или криков души на тему содержания собеседований в IT. Мол, и интервьюировать не умеют, и задачи дают не релевантные, и вопросы бессмысленные, и, вообще, собесы в IT это ритуал и карго-культ. Сидит там интервьюер и думает: «чего бы такое ещё спросить», самоутверждается, а решение принимает в итоге наобум и по первому впечатлению. В то же время компании в своих блогах пишут, как они за все хорошее, против всего плохого. Если коротко, то я тоже считаю, что среднестатистический собес – это бессмысленный трэш, и сам я иногда провожу их неудачно. Раньше вообще проводил «как все» – то есть отвратительно. Затем, задумался. А что, если я постараюсь осмыслить, зачем я провожу интервью и почему задаю те вопросы, которые задаю? Может быть, мне будет проще отбирать релевантных кандидатов? Или я хотя бы смогу сэкономить немного времени, убрав из процесса что-то лишнее? Добрый день. Меня зовут Михаил Толстой. I've just done the math.
Over the last two and a half months, I've heard back from less than 2% of the #companies I've #applied for #jobs at.
Less than a 2% response rate.
This has me wondering what the hell is wrong with me that I can't even get a "thank you for applying" email...or is it that most companies' #HR people can't be arsed to automate a reply email?
Anyway, the income issue is becoming desperate... and I need to figure out how to get my foot in the door - any door.
“Grosse Koalition” ist eine sachlich falsche Beschreibung. “GroKo” dagegen hat einen Klang, der sich irgendwie weiter treffend anfühlt. Der Hessische Rundfunk ist der derzeit führende ARD-Sender, der sich mit solchen Ausdrucksproblemen rumschlagen muss. Darüber berichtete gestern René Martens/MDR-Altpapier.. Die komplizierte Beziehung zwischen Sex und Politik – wer wüsste besser darüber Bescheid als Journalist*inn*en? Und laut Martens hat die HR-Studioleiterin in der Landeshauptstadt die auf den Punkt gebracht.
Die Koalitionsverhandlungen zwischen den ehemaligen Volksparteien charakterisierte sie mit: “Die Beziehung ist frisch, die Hormone sind noch da, die Glücksgefühle verströmen, sag ich mal.”. Wow, da will mann nicht dazwischen sein.
In hessischer Atemluft muss es irgendwie eine hormonelle Schlagseite geben. Das bestätigt auch ein Text des klugen Popjournalisten Klaus Walter/FR: “Sexpositivity in der Popmusik: Brust voraus – Ist Nacktheit im Pop-Geschäft eine Form von Selbstermächtigung oder gilt einfach weiterhin: Sex sells?”
Und Extradienst-Gastautorin Ulrike Heider – hat die nicht auch ein Übermass an hessischer Luft geatmet? Ich habs nachgesehen: 41 Jahre, danach folgten 35 Jahre New York und Berlin. Dieser Mix scheint mir verträglicher.

Wie ist die hormonelle Lage der FAZ? Ehrlich gesagt: das will ich lieber nicht wissen. Aber vom Organ der herrschenden Klassen erfahre ich immerhin was wirklich wichtig ist. Z.B. “Wie die Dürre am Panamakanal den Welthandel gefährdet – Weil Wasser für die Schleusen fehlt, stauten sich in den den vergangenen Monaten immer wieder Schiffe vor dem Panamakanal. Neue Analysen des Internationalen Währungsfonds zeigen nun, welche Folgen die aktuelle Trockenheit hat.” War eben mit Firefox noch ohne Paywall.
Oder: “Brasilien leidet unter heftiger Hitzewelle – Das südamerikanische Land ächzt unter extremer Hitze und Trockenheit. Die Temperaturen sind für Menschen gefährlich. Und das, obwohl der Sommer in Brasilien noch gar nicht angefangen hat.” Wird sicher auch gleich eingemauert.
Merke: solche Informationen sind geeignet, breite Teile der Bevölkerung zu verunsichern. Der zahlenden Elite dagegen ist kein Wissensvorsprung zu teuer.
Im #HR ein Interview mit dem Frankfurter IHK-Präsidenten zum Thema #Tempo30 gehört.
Dort fordert er das Tempolimit an Schulen an die tatsächlichen Schulzeiten anzupassen.
Außerhalb der Schule würden ja schon die Eltern aufpassen.
Auch sonst verzapft er lauter Unsinn.
Nächstes Jahr ist übrigens IHK-Wahl.
Es ist zwar Wunschdenken, aber vielleicht findet endlich bei den Gewerbetreibenden mal ein Bewusstseinswandel statt.

[Part 3] As I was driving to the airport to fly down to Houston, I got a call from my manager and HR. I was actually kind of expecting it, I figured they’d need to talk about bereavement leave etc.
My manager told me that actually we were doing layoffs today and I was impacted and they wanted to know if I had any questions. I just sat in my truck and told them that right now there are more important things to take care of, like being there for my brother and family, very likely funeral preparations, things like that.
HR said “Yeah, this probably wasn’t a very good day for this was it?”
Feeling a lot of emotions. All of it was a shock, but there really are more important things that need to take priority right now.
But whenever management or leadership complains about workers not being loyal, please remember this story.

Recent research has revealed that companies with female CEOs are more profitable than others. Pulled together by Frank Recruitment Group – a global IT staffing firm – the data showed that 87% of 2021’s Fortune 500 companies with female CEOs reported above-average profits.
In comparison, for those without a female CEO, this same statistic dropped down to 78%. If there was ever a sign for women to believe in themselves as leaders, this is it.

EVERY 3 years HR sends a questionnaire to 8000 employees with the exact same ineffectual questions, and then summarizes the answers in THE MOST INEFFICIENT way possible. Costs a fortune.
EVERY time I grumble while I fill it out and mumble about the questions they SHOULD be asking me.

Der #HR beschafft ein Handgranaten-Modell zu #Rexherchezwecken (#Verwechselbarkeit von #Attrappen), lässt das #Modell rumliegen, das Modell wird von einer #Reinigungskraft gefunden und der HR wegen einer #Handgranate geräunt. Ich finde es sehr #lustig, vielleicht etwas zu lustig.

We kwamen op de verplichte #elektrische #bus die #ondernemers moeten gaan aanschaffen.
Hij gaf aan groot probleem.
Ze hebben een te kleine #actieradius en hij, #loodgieters, #timmermannen e.d. hebben vaak 1000 kg of meer in, aan of op de bus als lading dat mogen\kunnen ze dan niet trekken en ook zakt de afstand naar gemiddeld 100 km terug.
Of hij dan bij elke klant zijn bus moest gaan #opladen.

Next time you apply somewhere, ask true experts for help and don't rely on those shitty websites!
It became so much easier and less stressful to write reviews (mine and other people's) when I realized that no one reads them.

The #job #application web pages and processes for so many companies are terrible. They ask you to upload your resume, then they ask you to enter your work history, etc. regardless. Either this can be done manually, which is a pain and redundant, or their site will just read it off your resume and auto fill the fields. But this always leads to everything being completely messed up and you have to spend more time re-filling the fields. Ugh. I blame the #HR software they all use (Workday, etc.).

Slow Adoption of APIs Plagues HR Technology

Is a company culture problem and all the art, foosball tables & cubicle arranging in the world won't solve it or make staff care about work.
Overheard 2 businessmen discussing corporate office changes so that employees "won't feel like just a cog in a machine."
They came up with these 'great' strategies:
- Rearrange the cubicles
- Art on the walls
- Seat managers closer to employees
- More team fun events
Notably not discussed:
- More pay
- Profit sharing
- More ownership of decisions & input
- Recognition of employee successes
- More PTO and/or work-life flexibility
- WFH options

Sometimes I may rant a little too much for many people's liking on #LinkedIn - But if you are interested in #MentalHealth at #Work and #HR and #Law or are a commercial #Lawyer and also interested in #Wellness and #Wellbeing then you may like this.
At a previous job, #HR promoted #mindfulness #meditation. I think that program was very successful. Not because it helped reduce #stress.
I mean it did that. And with that, it probably made me more productive and more pleasant to work with.
But it also prevented me from thinking about why I was stressed. Mindfulness disassociates the self from emotions. I am not what I feel. It wasn't the job's tight deadlines or high expectations that was causing me stress. It was cognitive dissonance.
Deep down, I knew some of my work wasn't beneficial to society. That much of it was strengthening extractive #business practices. That it benefited only a few already rich share holders and some customers. But I believed in our 'mission' and that belief clashed with the other realizations. Mindfullness meditation helped me not to worry about it at night and be a good coworker the next day.
I still think mindfulness meditation can be good—I still practice it when I feel overwhelmed. But I hope that people who are sad, anxious or angry at a well-paid job let their emotions run free and #rage against how societies are messing things up. And then decide about what they really need in life.
Genuinely curious, in the US, when you answer "I do not wish to answer" does an employer assume you have a disability? Do they filter a candidate out based on this? I assume, they filter candidates out for having a disability even if they shouldn't.

I think there might be a threshold for when a company stops caring about their employees. I think it probably coincides with when they form a HR department.
Having an entire department with the primary purpose of treating humans like (consumable) resources is a pretty good indication that the empathy is gone.
