In #Mannheim, "smart" #AI surveillance cameras should reduce crime. However, they report friendly #hugs as attacks; not really helpful. On the other hand, the additional #surveillance apparently ignores police brutality.

The benefits are unclear, the survey used to motivate the cameras has systematic problems and actually pointed to entire different problems citizens wanted the city to solve.

In the silence that now fell into the room, all he could hear was her sobbing. It broke his heart to see her so desperate, but he was paralyzed, caught between two options, both wrong.

He hesitantly took a step closer.
She turned around, a handkerchief in hand, desperately trying to dry the tears that kept flowing.
“But you could just try and tell me. Perhaps I would understand.”
She shook her head.
“Some things don’t have a solution, Hare. Sometimes, there is nothing you can do about a situation. But sometimes, a hug can go a long way. Because it says more than words.”
He heard Aretha say.
Well, he couldn’t make it any worse, could he?
He opened his arms.
“Okay, then. No questions asked. Hug?”

Like in slow motion, she came towards him, hesitantly lifted her arms as if she had forgotten how hugging worked.

Patiently.
Hers to decide whether she trusted him or not.
Finally, her arms found their way around his middle, and she rested her head against his chest.
Only now he closed his arms around her.
For a moment, there was silence.
Then, a shiver ran through her body and she started to cry.
Violently.
She sobbed, and shivered, and sniveled, and wailed, and there wouldn’t have missed much, and Galahad would have cried along because it sounded so desperate and lost.
“Shhhh, it is okay,” he said, at a loss of what else to say. “It is going to be alright. All is going to be alright, again.”
