The nests are coming along! The one on the board is part of a memorial piece I'm creating to honor my mother-in-law who passed away 3 years ago. She loved to feed the hummingbirds and the flowers resting around it were from her service.
The other nest is so full of hair! I can't believe how much hair is woven in! It's proving a little trickier to pour resin on. I've got a little mess to fix on it already.

Chatting with someone on Instagram who's currently very near where we visited in Costa Rica three weeks ago and who's had more stationary hummingbirds to photograph. Our flying friends were decidedly more zippy-all-over-the-place and this is probably the best of the photos I managed to snap in the cloud forest.

This is probably an eastern phoebe. It's a small bird with gray head and back feathers, and a cream colored throat, chest and belly.
I think this is an eastern peewee. It is a small, olive-brown bird, with a whiteish throat, chest and belly. It has long wings, unlike other flycatchers.
This is a juvenile red headed woodpecker, hatched this summer. It won't get its red head for a while, maybe a year from now. It has a brown head, brownish-black feathers and a dingy white belly.
This is the last look at the juvenile male ruby throated hummingbird that was probably hatched in my yard this summer. I haven't seen him or his sister for 10 days, so I assume they have departed for the south, which they have never seen, but somehow they know how to get there.

Got told off by a hummingbird today (lol).

Lots of angry hovering & high-pitched squeaking. If you've never been yelled at by a hummingbird lemme tell you it's absolutely ADORABLE.

Hummingbirds returned about a week ago (migration time) so I put out the feeder. The territorial battles have been epic. Like Star Wars level lol.

And this one guarding the feeder gets *very hostile* every time I dare to go outside. 😂

The depth perception is very off here. The fencing is actually several feet behind the hummingbird. Photo was taken with a long lens from across the yard.

A ruby throated hummingbird with its tongue sticking out. I was watching them at the local arboretum. I didn't realize my shutter speed was 1/4000 which resulted in the dark background.

I believe I was told that this is a female which is why there is no ruby throat. If I'm wrong please let me know.

This month, I made an effort to get out of the house and get some pictures of migrating warblers, but things did not work out for me. I was sitting on my back porch this afternoon, when this fellow showed up to cheer me up: a black throated green warbler. This is a tiny black throated green warbler; it has a yellow and gray head, a black throat, with white chest and belly and black and white wings.
This is a male downy woodpecker. He is black and white all over with a red stripe at the back of his head, telling the world that he is a male.
A hummingbird , wings outspread, landing on the feeder. The dark spots on his throat mark him a a juvenile male.

This is the second time I’ve found an anole lizard - maybe it’s the same lizard - on the #hummingbird feeder. It has to jump a foot (30 cm) or so across from the wall to get over to it. I thought maybe it’s going after insects that are attracted by the feeder’s sugary liquid, but it looks like it’s licking around the feeder itself. Do lizards have a sweet tooth? 🤔

A juvenile ruby throated hummingbird taking a small break from feeding on the nearby flowers.

I watched this hummingbird feed on several flowers then fly up to perch on this branch for a while before going back to the flowers. I also noticed the tongue was starting to come out in this photo.

The visits of the ruby throated hummingbird are getting shorter each day. The fall migration starts as early as Mid- July with the peak being in late august and early September.

The Rufous hummingbird lost two-thirds of its population since 1970, according to the 2022 State of the Birds report.
