For some reason iOS and iPadOS 17 add an entry for access to calendars in the settings of each third-party app. Access is set to none though. Our drawing app Canvas neither uses calendars nor requests access to them. 🤔

For those of you iPad users who, like me, make radical changes to you HomeScreen layout on a regular basis: to remove a whole bunch of apps from view without manually tapping “Removing From HomeScreen” for each app, get into edit mode, pick up a bunch of app icons at once, and drag them off into the App Library screen. Can’t believe i never tried that before.

Safari 17 adds support for largeBlob extension for passkeys. Websites can use the additional storage to save data that can later be retrieved when signing in with a passkey. These saved blobs are synced and shared along with passkeys.

And support for enterprise attestation too 🎉

We also are adding support for enterprise WebAuthn attestation for passkeys in iCloud Keychain. Managed devices can provide an attestation statement when creating passkeys, using a certificate provisioned through MDM.

That last bit about being able to return a custom attestation statement on managed devices is interesting. I think it makes iCloud Keychain-backed authenticators the first platform authenticator to support use with enterprise attestation - I've understood that it was only specially-ordered security keys that ever supported EA. That'll go a long way in getting orgs with managed devices to reconsider supporting passkeys.

Things are heating up for passkeys in enterprise environments!

Five years ago, I was firmly embedded in the Apple ecosystem. I had a Macbook Pro, an iPhone, an Apple Watch and an iPad Pro with Apple Pencil.

Since then I've replaced everything but the iPad and Pencil with non Apple products.

I don't think I could ever go back.

I have become less and less interested in Apple's announcement days. The only thing of note this WWDC is that my iPad will be getting the customizable lock screen that it should have got last year when the iPhone got it. Hardly ground-breaking.

@gruber @pschiller Any chance we can get more awareness for the iPad Pro #blooming problem? We get it, miniLED has its limitations when it comes to high-contrast detailed areas. But there are fixes possible. For example not letting native #iPadOS apps go full black (Files, Calendar, Settings etc.). Letting all dimming areas light up slightly is much better than the insanity of jumping blooming clouds when you try to use an iPad in the dark. It's an issue.

Will Apple be able to switch the discourse from AI to AR?

Can they ignore AI hype completely, or will there be some improvements e.g. to Siri?

There are no new #iPad’s expected this year - what will be the #iPadOS story? Just subset of features coming with initial iPadOS 17 release, and more later once the new hardware is announced?

Should we compare it to Resolve on desktop? No, but given the chance of a full Resolve on iPad soon, we are getting closer to what we should compare:

A professional video editor for #iPadOS that is not just on the upper "pro" spectrum but rather actual maxed out professional software. And Final Cut is far from it.

If Blackmagic Design really gives us a full-fledged version of #DaVinci #Resolve on iPad, I'd go for the 99€ single fee for Resolve rather than the 49€ for Final Cut.

Will they? Chances are high. You can already open the missing workspaces with a keyboard shortcut. Yes, Fusion, Deliver, Edit and Fairlight are there. They are just not optimized for touch yet and behave inconsistently. But they work. Fingers crossed they are just hidden away until optimized.

I think primarily for social media content creators. Itˋs quick, it has all the important edits like size, rotation, masking, fast color correction directly upfront and ready. The touch interface is a delight to use. It's ridiculously fast. You can quickly animate drawings with the Apple Pencil in-stream. There is a dialogue enhancer built in.....

There's still no way to completely disable Home background activities on the iPad. It keeps draining the battery when the iPad is idle, even though the iPad is not a hub.
I'll remove "My Home" and all accessories. Perhaps this helps!

Apple pushed an urgent "Security Response" update to counter some terrifying zero-day threat ...

... but unfortunately their verification servers seem to be hosed, so that if you try to install it, your device tells you (erroneously and misleadingly) that "you are no longer connected to the Internet" and refuses to install it.

Finally updated my #iPad and #iPhone to #iPadOS and #iOS 16. Why are the digits of the clock on the Lock Screen so fat?

Today @fosiaDesign and I made it possible to create a #recipe in #Kookin using only your voice. Works on #iOS, #iPadOS, #macOS and #watchOS. You can of course share audio files with Kookin using the Share Sheet, if you prefer recording in Voice Memos for example.

One of Apple’s worst pieces of user interface design: the “Reply” button in iOS and iPadOS Mail. Two identical icons, one at the top and the second at the bottom.
