This is a snippet of a discussion in r/Europe on reddit.

Ignore the naked #racism for a moment, I wondered what would happen if I were to point out that there was indeed a sociological reason for the "pattern" here.

Case in point, the "gangsters" and "mafia" that once 'ruled' America were also Italian and Irish #immigrants, right?

Could it be that when desperate people land in an entirely unfamiliar culture without official papers, the only life they can live involves lots of crime?

#immigrants #USPol #fascism #USSR #culture

i think my folks understand america very well, but the way some americans are "anti-antifa" or "scared of antifa" is extremely confusing to them (and to me).

the place where my folks are from is the former USSR. USSR fought against the nazis and lost millions of people fighting against fascism. also my dad had relatives who were never heard from after the nazis took their city in southern ukraine. my grandpa fought in stalingrad. my mom's family had to evacuate their city because they were getting invaded by nazis. the city where all 3 of us were born was invaded by nazis more than once. my dad's mom had to dig graves for her own countrypeople on order of the nazis....and the stories go on and on.

so like, there was no chance of developing confusion as to whether you wanted to be on the anti- side of the "fa". and i think they are confused as to how americans (who ALSO fought against the "fa" in WWII) could become confused about who was "the good guy" in the split between the anti- and the "fa"...

but, funny enough, i don't think they'd ever heard of antifa until it started getting big on cable news and then filtered down to network news (which they watch over coffee). when they found out, that's when the confusion, how could *americans* (who again, fought an actual war against actual "fa") be mad at *antifa*. anyway, now they know why (because plenty of americans are fine with the "fa"), but it still strikes them as extremely creepy and concerning. they understand what it means if people are out there "keeping antifa out of their town." they understand. meanwhile my dad is still watching hitler documentaries on the history channel "so that we can understand how it a country that was ~one of the most advanced in europe!~". it's like, dad, look around, pal. you don't have to look in history to "learn how it happened." it's happening!

A World of Slaves:
Most Americans haven’t seen what’s coming.

Nancy MacLean notes that when the #Kochs’ control of the GOP kicked into high gear after the financial crisis of 2007-08, many were so stunned by the “shock-and-awe” tactics of #shutting #down government, #destroying #labor unions, and #rolling #back #services that meet citizens’ basic necessities that few realized that many leading the charge had been trained in economics at Virginia institutions, especially George Mason University.

Wasn’t it just a new, particularly vicious wave of partisan politics?
It wasn’t.

MacLean convincingly illustrates that it was something far more disturbing.
MacLean is not the only scholar to sound the alarm that the country is experiencing a #hostile #takeover that is well on its way to radically, and perhaps permanently, altering the society.

Peter #Temin, former head of the MIT economics department, INET grantee, and author of "The Vanishing Middle Class", as well as economist Gordon #Lafer of the University of Oregon and author of "The One Percent Solution", have provided eye-opening analyses of where America is headed and why.

MacLean adds another dimension to this dystopian big picture, acquainting us with what has been overlooked in the capitalist right wing’s playbook.

She observes, for example, that many liberals have missed the point of strategies like #privatization.

Efforts to “reform” #public #education and #Social #Security are not just about a preference for the private sector over the public sector, she argues. You can wrap your head around those, even if you don’t agree.

Instead, MacLean contends, the goal of these strategies is to radically alter power relations, #weakening pro-public forces and #enhancing the #lobbying #power and commitment of the corporations that take over public services and resources, thus advancing the plans to #dismantle #democracy and make way for a return to #oligarchy.

The majority will be held captive so that the wealthy can finally be free to do as they please, no matter how destructive.

MacLean argues that despite the rhetoric of Virginia school acolytes, shrinking big government is not really the point.

The #oligarchs require a government with tremendous new powers so that they can bypass the will of the people.
This, as MacLean points out, requires greatly #expanding #police #powers “to control the resultant popular anger.”
The spreading use of pre-emption by GOP-controlled state legislatures to suppress local progressive victories such as living wage ordinances is another example of the right’s #aggressive use of #state #power.

👉Could these right-wing capitalists allow private companies to fill #prisons with helpless citizens—or, more profitable still, right-less undocumented #immigrants? ☑️They could, and have.

👉Might they engineer a #retirement #crisis by moving Americans to inadequate 401(k)s? ☑️Done.

👉Take away the rights of consumers and workers to bring grievances to court by making them sign #forced #arbitration agreements? ☑️Check.

👉Gut #public #education to the point where ordinary people have such bleak prospects that they have no energy to fight back? ☑️Getting it done.

👉Would they even refuse children #clean #water? ☑️Actually, yes.

MacLean notes that in #Flint, Michigan, Americans got a taste of what the emerging oligarchy will look like — it tastes like #poisoned #water. There, the Koch-funded Mackinac Center pushed for legislation that would allow the governor to take control of communities facing emergency and put unelected managers in charge.
In Flint, one such manager switched the city’s water supply to a polluted river, but the Mackinac Center’s lobbyists ensured that the law was fortified by protections against lawsuits that poisoned inhabitants might bring. Tens of thousands of children were exposed to #lead, a substance known to cause serious health problems including brain damage.

Libertarian economist Tyler #Cowen has provided an economic #justification for this kind of #brutality, stating that where it is difficult to get clean water, private companies should take over and make people pay for it. “This includes giving them the right to cut off people who don’t—or can’t—pay their bills,” he explains.

To many this sounds grotesquely #inhumane, but it is a way of thinking that has deep roots in America.

In "Why I, Too, Am Not a Conservative" (2005), Buchanan considers the charge of #heartlessness made against the kind of classic liberal that he took himself to be.

MacLean interprets his discussion to mean that people who “failed to foresee and save money for their future needs” are to be treated, as Buchanan put it, “as #subordinate members of the species, akin to…#animals who are dependent.’”

Do you have your education, health care, and retirement personally funded against all possible exigencies?
Then that means #you.

"Despite studies showing #Black #immigrants are, on average, the most educated group of immigrants in the #UnitedStates, they earn lower wages than similarly trained non-Black immigrants and have the highest #unemployment rate of any #immigrant group.

An ethnic #racist asks, 'Why are Black immigrants doing better than African Americans?'

An ethnic #antiracist asks, 'Why are Black immigrants not doing as well as other immigrant groups?'"

How to Be an Antiracist, Ibram X. Kendi

#PrivateEquity profits from #climate disaster clean-up – while investing in #fossilfuels

> Exclusive: Study shows resilience workers, mostly #refugees and #immigrants, poorly protected as top firms ‘pad their pockets by cutting costs’

As the industry has become more profitable, at least 72 companies that specialize in disaster cleanups and restoration have been acquired by private equity firms since 2020, according to the research, by the Private Equity Stakeholder Project (PSEP) and Resilience Force, a labor rights organization with thousands of members.Wage theft, lack of protective clothing, and other unsafe conditions are rampant across the industry at the expense of workers, communities and climate, according to the report, Private Equity Profits from Disasters, shared exclusively with the Guardian. At risk are tens of thousands of resilience workers, traveling from disaster to disaster cleaning up and rebuilding American communities while facing hazards such as unstable buildings, ash and other toxins, and water-borne diseases.Researchers found that an increasingly complex web of franchises, contractors and subcontractors, insurance providers, labor brokers and agencies and mostly temporary jobs makes it difficult for workers to know who is ultimately accountable for violations

the word from the soviet diaspora in chicago (ie, my dad) is that you can very successfully come to america from ukraine if you pay a doctor $4k USD to write a note that you're not fit to serve in the military. for most ukrainians, i think this would be a very large amount of money, but if you've got it, it makes sense.

so yea, more and more ukrainian families are showing up in the chicagoland area every day. luckily there's a very large existing community of immigrants from the former soviet union in chicago, and they pretty much all support ukraine, even the ones from russia. in america, it gets pretty hard to maintain those kinds of divisions, especially since we're not in the same media echo chamber as people in russia.

and ukrainians are very resourceful, so i think they will find a way here in these humble united states. (what i mean by this is that i'm sure they'll find a way to start making $$$ asap. they are resourceful!!)

although i did meet one recent ukrainian arrival at a bbq last month who says she can't wait to go back to ukraine! america doesn't agree with her. well, i get that. america doesn't agree with me either lol.

in conclusion, here are some photos of the food spread at that bbq. some of the items were imported straight from ukraine! we were all impressed by the effort the hosts had gone to. AND: the kvass was actually tasty! it was the first time i've had good kvass. 😅

and if you're wondering what the mystery pink/white dish is, it is the famous "herring in a fur coat" (i used to love it as a kid. LOVE IT.):

The action will allow participants in the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or #DACA, to access govt-funded #health insurance programs

Went for lunch and a walk with a friend I haven’t seen since the pandemic. She gave me Kayanoya’s vegetable stock and Kamenoko Tawashi(scrubbing brush) her friend “sent far too many” to her. Then I realized that it’s a very immigrants thing to share things sent from the homeland. In Japanese we call it “Osusowake” but I’m sure other immigrants do that too. Sharing just a little taste of home 🥰

We are particularly concerned about the DEA’s Proposed Rule restricting controlled medication prescriptions via #telemedicine will harm Black, Indigenous, and other people of color, people with #disabilities, #LGBTQI (and especially transgender, non-binary, and intersex) people, women, #immigrants and their families, rural communities, and people with low incomes. 4/x

“I think that we’re in a tough battle between everybody’s getting more informed or everyone’s getting misinformed. There’s always been the conscious rapper and a deep rapper and all of that. If it’s not done right, it’s not going to work.”

At #SXSW I got to interview Congolese-Canadian-Texan hip-hop artist David Shabani about his unique perspective on #music and the world: via @TexasObserver

“Deal: Biden & Trudeau, will allow #Canada to turn back #immigrants at Roxham Rd, popular crossing point from #NewYork for migrants seeking asylum in Canada.

In exch Canada agreed to provide new legal refugee program for 15K migrants fleeing violence, persecution & econ devastation in S. & Central America, lessening pressure of illegal crossings into US from Mexico”

Malik quotes Jonathan Metzl, author of Dying of Whiteness:

“Liberals across the world always think ‘it won’t happen to me’ whenever what are considered to be fringe groups are attacked by the right. There’s a lot of denial, dismissal and elitism,” he says – a reluctance to recognise how the rights of minorities are linked to those of majorities.

First they come for the immigrants, the trans people, and then….

Nesrine Malik writes,

"The reality is that nobody is protected in the culture war. Not in a country consumed by an addiction to performative cruelty towards those who arrive here only to shoulder the blame for all our economic mismanagement and political failure. An immigrant shivering on the beach or languishing in detention may be a long way from your life, but the government has sketched a line, long and winding, that connects you."
