Speaker Johnson, days after kissing the ring at Mar-a-Lago (& shortly after stories explaining that Trump hung McCarthy out to dry bc he didn't reverse impeachment), Mike Johnson approves an impeachment vote when the best evidence supports impeachment of Donald Trump.

I tend to agree with @michaelgemar regarding the need for some sort of #dueprocess for the #14thAmendment to disqualify a candidate for #President. That's why I was so upset that #Trump wasn't convicted in his 2nd #impeachment. #Congress had the opportunity to ban him right there and then & chose not to, now the chickens are coming home to roost. I happen to agree with @randahl that it's pretty obvious that Trump led an #insurrection against the #USA & tried to subvert the #constitution.

One final look at the Ken Paxton #impeachment saga, this time a study of the outsized influence held by Dan Patrick over the proceedings. From #Politics Reporter @justinmiller in our magazine:
The #Republican-controlled US #House Oversight Cmte said on Wed it has subpoenaed President Joe Biden's son, #HunterBiden, & brother, #JamesBiden, to appear for depositions, in an escalation of its #impeachment inquiry into the Democrat.
House #Republicans launched an impeachment inquiry in Sept, following months of probes that found nothing.
30 years of #Yabloko: an initially liberal and practically leaderless project in the 90s with decisive roles in the 1999 #impeachment and the #Primakov PM appointment, it is now largely impotent, solely opposing the war and ostensibly tolerated by the #kremlin as some sort of spoiler.

The GOP plan is to convince some of the soft Democrat support not to vote in November 2024.
If enough of these voters are influenced by this "negative messaging," they might feel the Democrats are not worth the effort to cast a vote.
A half million D votes not being counted is a big deal in a coin-flip election.
Based on absolutely no #evidence whatsoever, #Bible-thumping denizen of #Gilead #MikeJohnson declares it is “very likely” that #PresidentBiden committed impeachable offenses. I don't think the #Republicans could have picked someone less credible than this #Christofascist #bigot to lead the House.
& they argued that under the principle of #DoubleJeopardy, #Trump could not be tried #on the #ElectionInterference charges since he had already been acquitted by the #Senate on many of the same accusations during his 2nd #impeachment.
" it’s increasingly valid to ask whether intimidation actually saved Trump from conviction...
The effort came up 10 votes shy of convicting Trump in the Senate...
it’s hardly ridiculous to believe there might have been more senators like the one Romney described whose votes were influenced by fear.
We’ll never know if the absence of that fear might have led to a different outcome"

La #Cortecostituzionale della #Georgia ha autorizzato l’apertura di una procedura di #impeachment contro il presidente filo-occidentale #SalomeZourabichvili per le recenti visite nell’#UE condotte senza l’approvazione del governo.
Bingo! The Right uses this tactic often: take a word or phrase, use it inappropriately & often, thereby watering-down or destroying its real meaning and impact.
So anyway, I was AFK when Saturday's Graphical History Tour posted the next chapter in #Oklahoma 's #impeachment saga: https://bergetoons.blogspot.com/2023/10/the-invisible-empire-strikes-back.html
It's their way of devaluing the Trump impeachments: 'See? Everyone deserves it...Trump is no different from everyone else...'
"Impeachments and forced removals from office emerge as partisan weapons in Georgia, other states"
"None of the targets met the bar traditionally set for impeachment — credible allegations of committing a crime while in office. Their offense: staking out positions legislative Republicans didn’t like."

The case for Biden's #impeachment by Representative Connelly
#news / not news
When #Texas #Republican legisl moved 2 impeach/remove #KenPaxton, it wasn’t out o goodnss o their hearts. It was because they were attemptng 2 get rid of Paxton, & insulate themselves frm his scandals, b4 he could get criminally indicted by #DOJ.
Removal process failed, bcuz Tex Reps r as #corrupt as Paxton. But while #impeachment could have cost Paxton job, indictment could cost him his freedom. Sure enough, federal #GrandJury is making major steps in that direction.
#Trump's latest position—that the #Senate's failure to #convict his #impeachments trigger #doubleJeopardy in his #criminal cases—is going nowhere. Double-jeopardy only applies to #criminal #proceedings. #Impeachment is not a criminal proceeding, or even a #legal proceeding. Impeachment is a #political process. Trump is just making shit up, as usual. But it's troubling to see his #lawyers sign on to such rubbish. Unlike Trump, they know better.
"The moment that an elected official changes their vote on a pressing public matter — not because they fear electoral backlash from their constituents, but because they fear that their party leader will endanger their children’s lives — democracy has been compromised."
But #MattGaetz filed a motion to have McCarthy removed as speaker anyway.
It's a good lesson. Make a deal with snakes and you're going to get bit.
As Michael Tomasky says today, some of us console ourselves that the fascism of Trump and his followers is stupid. And while may be true that smart fascism can be more destructive than dumb fascism, the latter can still do a lot of damage. Witness the folks handling the faux impeachment of Biden right now.
There were plenty of ways the #GOP could have kneecapped #Trump. One of the easiest would have been to find him guilty at his #impeachment trial. But the vast majority of GOP politicians were too cowardly to do it. They knew he was guilty. But they were afraid of him/his base/their willingness to do #violence.
Apparently, the people who continue to vote for #Republicans are okay supporting cowardice, violence or both.
"It's all about distraction.
'Don't look over there, where a New York judge just ruled that the Trump Organization is liable for fraud,' says the carnival barker. 'Looky here, we've got some right-wing opinion bloviators coming to testify against Joe Biden.'"

"When you have no case, your choices are limited: Call a Fox-friendly law professor who still lives on Earth 1.0 and who will admit there is no basis for impeachment, or call a lizard person to explain that in the alternate MAGA universe, the absence of proof is a sure sign of a massive cover-up."
~ Robert B. Hubbell
“It’s hard to grasp the complete derangement of this moment. Three days before they’re set to shut down the United States government, Republicans launch a baseless impeachment drive against President Biden. No one can figure out the logic of either course of action. Why shut down the U.S. government, something no enemy nation has ever succeeded in doing?"

Biden impeachment hearing gets off to sputtering start
Committee members were asked to raise their hands if they believe both Hunter Biden and Donald Trump "should be held accountable" if convicted.
Every Democrat's hand went up; Republicans refused to participate.
"Republicans’ own witness in their impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden completely destroyed their claims multiple times on Thursday. … 'In fact, I do not believe that the current evidence would support articles of an impeachment,' [Jonathan Turley] told the hearing."
~ Tori Otten
GOP is no longer a political party.
The Republican debate marked its soul leaving its body.
This group of seven candidates – particularly ... Nikki Haley ... the only one grounded in some form of reality – should be grinding Trump into hamburger. He has weakness upon weakness, and he is ... a raving nut ball.
U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), blasted members of the House GOP at the opening of their first, televised, impeachment “inquiry” into President Joe #Biden Thursday morning, declaring, “If the Republicans had a smoking gun or even a dripping water pistol, they would be presenting it today but they’ve got nothing on Joe Biden.”

“Picking witnesses that refute House Republicans arguments for impeachment is mind blowing. This is an unmitigated disaster," said senior R aide.
And GOP lawmaker also expressed some disappointment with their performance thus far, telling: “I wish we had more outbursts.”
Timothy Naftali, a senior research scholar at Columbia University & co-author of “Impeachment: An American History,” lamented what he called a “troubling” precedent for a generation of #lawmakers who have come to view #impeachment as another tool of #partisan #warfare.
“Impeachment was in a glass case for a century,” Naftali said. “Now, the #House starts an impeachment inquiry because the speaker is trying to hold on to his job.”
…Half a dozen #legal & #constitutional experts told The WaPo that the #House’s #inquiry appears different from how #impeachment has been used in the past. It is the first to delve primarily into the behavior of a presidential relative & the first to investigate actions by the president before he entered the Oval Office.
“…there is no evidence that President Biden himself used his official perch to enrich his family, & a key witness testified last month that #HunterBiden was unable to influence his father’s actions or policy decisions — & that during their frequent communications, 'nothing of material' was ever discussed.”

Kim Wehle points out that the same Republicans who worked to undermine the impeachment of Donald Trump for valid reasons now want to impeach President Biden on bogus grounds. She writes,
“We must all keep our eyes on the big picture, and see clearly what these impeachment proceedings against Biden mean:”
The State Where Republicans Are Breaking Their Own Rules to Stay in Power
Heavily redrawn #election districts in the battleground state gave #Republicans firm control of the legislature — and the leeway to move aggressively against officials and judges they perceive as threats.
"If it’s Thursday, it must be impeachment. If it’s Saturday, it must be government shutdown. …
The double header indicates how both impeachments and government shutdowns – once seen as rare, dangerous and to be avoided at all costs – have become political weapons deployed with increasing abandon."
The #GOP seems to have found itself under increasing national scrutiny as this drama plays out. More to come!
The founders of the United States viewed #impeachment as a way to remind the president that he is not above the law and to deter abuses of power – not just to remove him from office
Just in: The #Texas Senate sided with Attorney General Ken Paxton on all 16 charges, letting him slip free of consequences yet again.
But there's still more trouble to come for K-Pax, writes our #Politics Reporter @justinmiller in his wrap-up of the #impeachment trial ...
Paxton was impeached for allegedly taking bribes, but ultimately members of his party chose not to vote for his conviction and removal from office.
Republicans pushing the Biden #impeachment inquiry continue to treat hearsay, rumor, and outright speculation as if it were evidence. It's not.
In one case, one even claims Biden *advocating US foreign policy interests* (firing Shokin for corruption) is somehow evidence of wrongdoing!
Why are Congressional Republicans looking to impeach Joe Biden when there's no evidence the president has done anything wrong?
We curated some of the best explainers on the topic, plus a look at Hunter Biden's legal troubles and the potential political fallout: https://flip.it/4XhJ13
"It's already worked to some degree in this case. According to a recent CNN poll, '61% say they think that Biden had at least some involvement in Hunter Biden's business dealings, with 42% saying they think he acted illegally, and 18% saying that his actions were unethical but not illegal.'"
"I don't know what specific psychology is at work, but it serves a tactical purpose for him and his allies by muddying the water and contributing to the widespread cynicism in American life that leads people to think everyone is corrupt and there's nothing to be done about it."
"Trump instinctively projects his own shortcomings and problems on his enemies and then attacks them which is what he's doing with the 'Biden Crime Family' thing."
~ Heather Digby Parton
Republicans keep admitting that they're conducting an #impeachment inquiry BECAUSE they have no evidence of wrong-doing.
That, and the fact that they're too busy seeking non-existent evidence for an impeachment to fund the government, should be the only thing covered.
