Today, we commemorate Frantz Fanon, the Afro-Caribbean anti-colonial revolutionary who passed away in 1961. Fanon was a prominent theorist, psychiatrist, and political philosopher who actively participated in armed liberation struggles. He volunteered to serve in Europe during World War II against the fascists and later supported the Algerian War of Independence against the French colonizers.

Die #Monroe-Doktrin wird am 2. Dezember 2023 200 Jahre alt. Die Zeilen, die Jahre später aus der Rede von Präsident James Monroe aus dem Jahr 1823 entnommen und als "Doktrin" etabliert wurden, werden seither verwendet, um die Vorherrschaft der #USA über die westliche Hemisphäre zu behaupten.
Mit dieser Doktrin wurden zahlreiche Kriege gegen die amerikanischen Ureinwohner und deren #Enteignung sowie der Mexikanisch-Amerikanische Krieg, der Spanisch-Amerikanische Krieg und alle Arten von #Putschen, #Sanktionen und wirtschaftlichem Druck gerechtfertigt.
Während etwa die Hälfte des politischen #Establishments der USA die Monroe-Doktrin in Worten ablehnt, ist man in der Praxis weniger uneinig. Tatsächlich hat diese allererste #Doktrin (ein Konzept, das nirgendwo in der US-#Verfassung zu finden ist) zu vielen weiteren präsidialen Doktrinen geführt, durch deren Anhäufung die Monroe-Doktrin effektiv auf die ganze Welt ausgedehnt wurde.
Als die Vereinigten Staaten begannen, nach Westen zu expandieren, stützten sie sich auf die Überzeugung, dass nichts, was sie angeblich gegen den europäischen Imperialismus unternahmen, imperialistisch sein konnte, sowie auf die Überzeugung, dass jeder von Natur aus von den Vereinigten Staaten erobert werden wollte, ganz zu schweigen von der Überzeugung, dass viele Menschen gar keine vollwertigen Personen waren - eine Überzeugung, die auch dadurch gestützt wurde, dass 1823 die Entdeckungsdoktrin in das US-Recht aufgenommen wurde.
Heute wird behauptet, dass die #Kriege und #Waffenlieferungen der USA dazu dienen, die #Demokratie zu verbreiten, die Unschuldigen zu verteidigen und die "Interessen" der USA zu schützen - ein Konzept, das seine Wurzeln in der Monroe-Doktrin hat. Aber die Realität war noch nie so, wie sie angekündigt wurde. Die USA haben nie viel getan, um lateinamerikanische Demokratien zu unterstützen - ganz im Gegenteil. Die Monroe-Doktrin ist kein Rechtskonzept. Und die Welt könnte nicht lange zwei oder mehr Nationen überleben, die ihre Monroe-Doktrinen ausweiten.
Es ist an der Zeit, die Idee, anderen Nationen den Willen der USA aufzuzwingen, sei es zu ihrem eigenen Wohl oder nicht, zu begraben und eine neue Doktrin der Friedensstiftung, der Rechtsstaatlichkeit, der Zusammenarbeit, der Entmilitarisierung und des gegenseitigen Respekts einzuführen.
Today in Labor History December 2, 1980: Four American missionaries were raped and murdered by a Salvadoran death squad. The Salvadoran Civil War began after a 1979 military coup. Catholic activists protested against the junta's oppression of the poor and working class. Death squads assassinated Óscar Romero, the Archbishop of San Salvador, March 24, 1980. After the four Americans were murdered, U.S. President Jimmy Carter suspended aid to El Salvador. However, succeeding President, Ronald Reagan, promptly authorized increased military aid. He also sent more U.S. military advisers, escalating attacks on civilians. His foreign policy advisor, Jean Kirkpatrick, claimed that "the nuns were not just nuns; they were political activists," as if this justified their rapes and murders. After the release of declassified documents in the 1990s, New Jersey congressman Robert Torricelli stated that it was "now clear that the Reagan Administration was certifying human rights progress in El Salvador they knew the terrible truth that the Salvadoran military was engaged in a widespread campaign of terror and torture." During the Civil War, over 65,000 civilians were killed, plus another 5,300 disappeared, with over half a million people internally displaced, and another half million fleeing to other countries as refugees.

I know I don't shut up about this but frankly not enough #people are angry about the 5-day/40 hour workweek (and I am AWARE a lot of people #work even more than that). I feel like a lot more people should be absolutely furious that we only really have two days a week and some occasional hours in the evening to socialise, run errands, do chores, or relax.
It's no wonder so many people are profoundly lonely and disconnected from their #communities when maintaining a social life in what little free time we have is incredibly difficult. If you have kids, a second #job, a very long commute, or other responsibilities, it's nearly impossible.
We literally aren't meant to live like this and I'll never stop being shocked how many people just take it as the natural state of things and don't want to throw a brick through a #billionaire's window every time they think of it.

Today in Labor History November 16, 1989: Six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her daughter were assassinated in El Salvador. They were among thousands killed by the military and right-wing death squads for speaking out for economic and social justice. The Jesuits were advocates of a negotiated settlement between the government of El Salvador and the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN). The murders attracted international attention and increased international pressure for a cease-fire. It was also a turning point that led toward a negotiated settlement to the war. Nine members of the Salvadoran military were tried. Only Colonel Guillermo Benavides and Lieutenant Yusshy René Mendoza were convicted. Everyone else was absolved or found guilty on lesser charges. Benavides and Mendoza were sentenced to thirty years in prison, but were released in 1993 by a legislature dominated by anti-guerilla and pro-military politicians.

Today in Labor History October 26, 1926: Augusto Sandino took up arms against the Nicaraguan state. Sandino had been living in exile in México during the early 1920s, where he participated in strikes led by the IWW. Inspired by the IWW, he adopted the IWW's black & red colors for the Sandinista flag.

I recently read "The Revolutionary Science of Marxism-Leninism" by J. Sykes, published by #FRSO (Freedom Road Socialist Organization) and I found it to be an excellent entry-level text to #ScientificSocialism. It's very approachable and easy to read for any leftist and, I believe, is quite persuasive in it's argument for embracing #DialecticalMaterialism and #HistoricalMaterialsm as primary ways by which to understand and change the world. Sykes also describes the #Leninist form, organization, and inner-process of a #communist party and how that can be an effective strategy for seizing and maintaining working-class power (the #DictatorshipOfTheProletariat) as we advance into the #socialist stage of human development. Those are perhaps the most commonly expected and basic topics, but he also delves into the #MarxistTheoryOfKnowledge, #PoliticalEconomy, #Imperialism, the #NationalQuestion involving the oppressed nations within the US, #WomensLiberation, and #QueerLiberation. I think this is a must read for anyone who considers themselves on the #Left and desires a deeper understanding of our world!

The drumbeat of #propaganda from these members & their “amen” chorus in the #RightWingMedia is having an effect: An Economist/YouGov poll released last week found a slight uptick among all voters for reducing military #aid to #Ukraine, but for the first time found that a majority of #Republicans now support such reductions. Fortunately, #Americans overall—even many voters in the #GOP—are still holding firm in their support for Ukraine in its fight against #Russian #imperialism.
Today in Labor History September 21, 1976: Chilean national Orlando Letelier was assassinated in Washington, D.C. by agents of the Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional (DINA), Pinochet’s secret police. An American, Ronni Moffitt, was also killed. The CIA was aware of the plans and knew of Pinochet’s involvement in the assassinations. Letelier had been a member of the government of Salvador Allende and was living in exile in the U.S. Immediately following the CIA-orchestrated coup that murdered Allende and placed Pinochet in power, Letelier was the first high-ranking Allende cabinet minister to be arrested. He spent over a year in various concentration camps, where he was repeatedly tortured. When he made it to the U.S., he worked for the Institute for Policy Studies. He wrote several articles critical of the Chicago Boys, the South American economists trained at the University of Chicago by Milton Friedman who went on to take on positions in their home countries’ governments, including Chile’s dictatorship, where they promoted free market policies and influenced leaders like Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan.

@ChristopherJM President #Zelensky probably doesn't qualify for the #Nobel peace prize, thanks to certain unavoidable technicalities, but damn if he isn't right up there with the best of the previous laureates. He stands on the fragile battle line between the increasingly collaborative, resurgent and belligerent despots and free peoples still believing in (more or less) liberal democracy.
A trained lawyer at a time when law seemed like a joke, he turned to comedy and... Ukrainians and all the rest of us should feel so lucky that he chose to run for office and win.

Today in Labor History September 4, 1970: Socialist Salvador Allende was elected President of Chile. As president, he tried to nationalize major industries, expand education and improve conditions for the working class. On September 11, 1973 (the other 9/11), he was ousted in a coup by Augusto Pinochet, leading to a dictatorship that lasted until 1990. Thousands of workers, socialists, union members and activists were killed, including folk singer Victor Jara, who continued to sing, as his torturers mashed his fingers and demanded that he play his guitar. The coup and dictatorship were supported by the CIA, and by President Nixon, and by the Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, who later won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Americanos are pissed that they can't have bananas year round if #degrowth/ #communism/ #anarchy happens. Banana availability has its roots in imperialism, destructive monocropping, and grueling agricultural labor/slavery.
We literally have a word for client states of #imperialism for the export of bananas: banana republic. Banana imports to the West is drenched in the blood of thousands massacred for your God damn commodities. In the #Philippines, companies told this instruction to banana worker syndicalists: “turn them into fertilizers for the bananas.”
On top of that is the steep ecological and carbon costs to actually shipping the damn things. Do you really need bananas year round?
There's also the problem of monocropping which destroys the biodiversity of forests to make way for plantations, even if we discount the slave labor. Monocropping has made Cavendish plantations at high risk of diseases. It could very well be that Cavendishes would become an endangered species just like the Gros Michel after nature erases its scourge. Maybe the extinction of the Cavendish is already a matter of time, rendering banana disocorse moot.
Americanos just don't understand that in a liberated world, maybe people won't be breaking their backs for some Americano to get their god damn banana. Of course degrowth/communism/anarchism means that relations to luxuries will change.
Besides, Cavendishes suck. They literally taste terrible. Y'all seriously live like this? Lakatan, Señorita, and Sabah tastes way better. Yeah, they can't be exported, boohoo. Not everything has to be a commodity, much less to please some Americano half a world away.
