Today, we commemorate Frantz Fanon, the Afro-Caribbean anti-colonial revolutionary who passed away in 1961. Fanon was a prominent theorist, psychiatrist, and political philosopher who actively participated in armed liberation struggles. He volunteered to serve in Europe during World War II against the fascists and later supported the Algerian War of Independence against the French colonizers.
The reason #GOP MAGA loonies vote against military support to #Ukraine is simple: if Putin, not Trump, happened to be their candidate, he'd force legislation to ban abortion, LGBTQ+ rights, order politically motivated arrests and invade Mexico.
If you want to defeat Trump, focus on supporting Ukraine in defeating Putin.

Beerdigt die Monroe Doktrin am 2. Dezember 2023 - 200 Jahre ist mehr als genug!
Die #Monroe-Doktrin wird am 2. Dezember 2023 200 Jahre alt.
Today in Labor History December 2, 1980: Four American missionaries were raped and murdered by a Salvadoran death squad. The Salvadoran Civil War began after a 1979 military coup. Catholic activists protested against the junta's oppression of the poor and working class. Death squads assassinated Óscar Romero, the Archbishop of San Salvador, March 24, 1980. After the four Americans were murdered, U.S. President Jimmy Carter suspended aid to El Salvador. However, succeeding President, Ronald Reagan, promptly authorized increased military aid. He also sent more U.S. military advisers, escalating attacks on civilians. His foreign policy advisor, Jean Kirkpatrick, claimed that "the nuns were not just nuns; they were political activists," as if this justified their rapes and murders. After the release of declassified documents in the 1990s, New Jersey congressman Robert Torricelli stated that it was "now clear that the Reagan Administration was certifying human rights progress in El Salvador they knew the terrible truth that the Salvadoran military was engaged in a widespread campaign of terror and torture." During the Civil War, over 65,000 civilians were killed, plus another 5,300 disappeared, with over half a million people internally displaced, and another half million fleeing to other countries as refugees.
Excited to be on a great round table on the production of space in contested territories. So many great scholars with me - Matthew Worsnick, Pamela Ballinger, Karolina Follis, Marta Verginella.
What does it mean to think about empire and the decolonial approach in territories contested between empires? Considering we live in a world of multiple competing empires, I believe this to be quite relevant!
Obituary Kissinger: a war criminal who served US imperialism | Morning Star https://morningstaronline.co.uk/article/f/kissinger-a-war-criminal-who-served-us-imperialism
“It is part of the Putin agenda of restoring Russian #imperialism. Both #Putin and #Gergiev promote the rotten old Russian trifecta: nationalism, orthodoxy and conservatism. Putin does it in military and #politics while Gergiev does it in #culture. What we can expect is performances in the Bolshoi operas that affirm [the] #Ukrainian, #Polish and #Georgian place in the Russian #empire.”
Mass murderer and War Criminal Henry Kissinger is finally dead!
He won the Nobel Peace Prize, along with Lê Đức Thọ, for their work in orchestrating a ceasefire in the Vietnam War. Two Nobel Prize committee members resigned in protest. During his diplomatic career, Kissinger was involved in orchestrating and/or supporting the Chilean coup and Pinochet dictatorship (over 3,000 killed); the Argentine Dictatorship (up to 30,000 killed); the Pakistani genocide in Bangladesh (3 million killed); and the Genocide in East Timor (up to 300,000 killed).
For some, a #diplomatic player with few equals & major commitment in international #politics ... for others (especially non-Americans) the Angel of Death visited upon them through the operation of a particular form of American #imperialism.
But, whatever you think of him, its fair to say that he was (as Hegel would have called him) a 'world historical figure' for better or worse.
Just to be clear in both the above paragraphs I would err to the latter clause.
He's finally dead. I had to wait until I turned 50 to read his obituary. War criminal. Mass murderer. Evil imperialist. He never stood trial for his crimes. He's probably in heaven. Israel and its supporters have a big book of talking points that drive home a single narrative: the plight of the Palestinians is not Israel's fault. It's a big lie. Of course it's Israel's fault (and the US' fault). New instance, new #introduction.
I see this instance has a *nice* *long* character limit for posts.
I have a Ph.D. in Human Science (2016, Saybrook University), which is about the experience of being human in social contexts. It is the mother of the social sciences but is now, at least in the English speaking world, and at least as far as I can tell, a dead field.
Once upon a time, a very, very long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I was a computer programmer. It was the wrong career choice.
In #kyriarchy, I mostly focus on #classism and #ageism, but since arriving in Pittsburgh, have been confronted with blatant #racism (and yes, many white people here do see it). But #SocialJustice has to be for everybody; to focus on any one identity, to the exclusion of others, is nothing more than to elevate that identity over that of the predominantly wealthy white males who are now in charge.
I oppose all #imperialism and #SettlerColonialism, not just U.S. and NATO imperialism and settler-colonialism. Having lived on the underbelly of #capitalism most of my life, I am #anticapitalist and ferociously opposed to #neoliberalism. I oppose physical and structural violence.
Human beings have #HumanRights. These rights are not constrained by their governments' failures to ratify certain human rights treaties.
#Borders exist to mark off territory controlled by elites whose competition accounts for most if not all wars and to deny human beings on the "wrong" side of an arbitrary line rights and privileges available on the "right" side. This cannot be justified ethically. I am hostile to #xenophobia

I know I don't shut up about this but frankly not enough #people are angry about the 5-day/40 hour workweek (and I am AWARE a lot of people #work even more than that). I feel like a lot more people should be absolutely furious that we only really have two days a week and some occasional hours in the evening to socialise, run errands, do chores, or relax.
It's no wonder so many people are profoundly lonely and disconnected from their #communities when maintaining a social life in what little free time we have is incredibly difficult. If you have kids, a second #job, a very long commute, or other responsibilities, it's nearly impossible.
We literally aren't meant to live like this and I'll never stop being shocked how many people just take it as the natural state of things and don't want to throw a brick through a #billionaire's window every time they think of it.
"In her illuminating and authoritative book #LegacyOfViolence: A #History of the #BritishEmpire, #CarolineElkins reveals an evolutionary and racialised doctrine that espoused an unrelenting deployment of violence to secure and preserve British imperial interests. And beyond this crisis, the #farleft is unprincipled about which #imperialism they will decry. That millions in Ukraine are displaced, 10,000s dead, tens of thousands of children kidnapped doesn’t matter because it’s not the #West or US imperialism. The #left supports a bankrupt dogmatic ideology. It’s as hollow and fake as MAGA #nationalism. That #Assad barrel bombed citizens and hospitals to dust, ignore it. That mafioso #putin in #oligarchy #russia supports the global #farright, ignore it…

Today in Labor History November 16, 1989: Six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her daughter were assassinated in El Salvador. They were among thousands killed by the military and right-wing death squads for speaking out for economic and social justice. The Jesuits were advocates of a negotiated settlement between the government of El Salvador and the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN). The murders attracted international attention and increased international pressure for a cease-fire. It was also a turning point that led toward a negotiated settlement to the war. Nine members of the Salvadoran military were tried. Only Colonel Guillermo Benavides and Lieutenant Yusshy René Mendoza were convicted. Everyone else was absolved or found guilty on lesser charges. Benavides and Mendoza were sentenced to thirty years in prison, but were released in 1993 by a legislature dominated by anti-guerilla and pro-military politicians.
@markwyner war is not ok. This IS new. There’s not been this level of conflict since the de-occupation of #gaza. #hamas orchestrated a large scale terror attack to create a crisis. #netanyahu is not to be trusted either. But imo far leftists who push a highly emotional ideology to suit their own agenda, seem to not get worked up about the tens of thousands+ dead, millions displaced and cities destroyed in #Ukraine due to #putin ’s #imperialism. Don’t trust that ideology. #israel #progressive
David Cameron has returned to British politics with his appointment as Foreign Secretary. To commemorate this here's a cartoon featuring him and a pig, because of course.
"hamas is Isis, though (or will have been, soon). and Zionism is sexy. did you know Jews are the original indigenous inhabitants of the land of Israel and it's not even close, living there for thousands of years continuously, speaking the same language and keeping the same traditions?"
"How can a brutal minority #Alawite #Assad regime hold control of the #Euphrates west bank that is solidly #Sunni #Arab? It's because two dead empires continue to oppress the region. #Russia burned up its army in #Ukraine and now #Iran stands alone in the Euphrates river valley.

“The stark truth is that this #war will only end for good when Russia’s neo-imperial dream finally dies. Today in Labor History November 11, 1918: World War I ended, with 10 million dead, 21 million wounded, 7.5 million prisoners and missing in action, and another 22 million killed by the influenza pandemic that was exacerbated by the war. (The pandemic would ultimately kill 50-100 million). Originally celebrated as Armistice Day, November 11 is now known as Veterans Day. And once again, we’re on the verge of an imperialistic World War, but this time with weapons that can obliterate the planet, during another pandemic that has already killed 7 million by the most conservative estimates, over 1 million in the U.S., alone.
Don’t let there be another World War. Peace now in Gaza! Peace now in Ukraine! Down with all imperialism, colonialism, authoritarianism and state violence! Down with capitalism! Down with fascism and supremacy. Freedom, justice, peace, autonomy, and prosperity for all people, regardless of race, religion, gender, ability, age, or sexual orientation.

As someone from the Global South, in a country that has suffered and been exploited by Spanish imperialism, British imperialism, and then US neoimperialism, I find it a bit amusing that the tone of this article is: "China is dangerously and alarmingly building bases and strongholds all over the world, some of which are close to OUR bases and strongholds!"
You see, only America gets to be a global superpower with imperialist reach.
(To forestall the certain bad faith arguments that are inevitable to pop up, I think Chinese imperialism is also bad).
Here's a chapter on homonationalism and US imperialism that I highly recommend.
"Matthew Leporati argues that the epic revival not only reflects but also interrogates this evangelical turn. The first to examine the impact of the missionary work on epic literature, this book offers sustained analysis of both under-read and canonical works, bringing fresh historical and literary contexts to bear on our understanding of this unique revival of epic poetry."

CenTex ARA breaks down how Israel works as an arm of US imperialism, and how antifascists in North America can directly intervene, starting with specific centers of imperialist collaboration, such as Austin Community College and University of Texas.

Today in Labor History October 26, 1926: Augusto Sandino took up arms against the Nicaraguan state. I recently read "The Revolutionary Science of Marxism-Leninism" by J. Sykes, published by #FRSO (Freedom Road Socialist Organization) and I found it to be an excellent entry-level text to #ScientificSocialism. It's very approachable and easy to read for any leftist and, I believe, is quite persuasive in it's argument for embracing #DialecticalMaterialism and #HistoricalMaterialsm as primary ways by which to understand and change the world. Sykes also describes the #Leninist form, organization, and inner-process of a #communist party and how that can be an effective strategy for seizing and maintaining working-class power (the #DictatorshipOfTheProletariat) as we advance into the #socialist stage of human development. Those are perhaps the most commonly expected and basic topics, but he also delves into the #MarxistTheoryOfKnowledge, #PoliticalEconomy, #Imperialism, the #NationalQuestion involving the oppressed nations within the US, #WomensLiberation, and #QueerLiberation. I think this is a must read for anyone who considers themselves on the #Left and desires a deeper understanding of our world!
I stand against terrorism and Hamas’s tactics…while acknowledging that they don’t act in a vacuum.

The drumbeat of #propaganda from these members & their “amen” chorus in the #RightWingMedia is having an effect: An Economist/YouGov poll released last week found a slight uptick among all voters for reducing military #aid to #Ukraine, but for the first time found that a majority of #Republicans now support such reductions. Fortunately, #Americans overall—even many voters in the #GOP—are still holding firm in their support for Ukraine in its fight against #Russian #imperialism.
Today in Labor History September 21, 1976: Chilean national Orlando Letelier was assassinated in Washington, D.C. by agents of the Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional (DINA), Pinochet’s secret police. An American, Ronni Moffitt, was also killed. The CIA was aware of the plans and knew of Pinochet’s involvement in the assassinations. Letelier had been a member of the government of Salvador Allende and was living in exile in the U.S. Immediately following the CIA-orchestrated coup that murdered Allende and placed Pinochet in power, Letelier was the first high-ranking Allende cabinet minister to be arrested. He spent over a year in various concentration camps, where he was repeatedly tortured. When he made it to the U.S., he worked for the Institute for Policy Studies. He wrote several articles critical of the Chicago Boys, the South American economists trained at the University of Chicago by Milton Friedman who went on to take on positions in their home countries’ governments, including Chile’s dictatorship, where they promoted free market policies and influenced leaders like Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan.
@ChristopherJM President #Zelensky probably doesn't qualify for the #Nobel peace prize, thanks to certain unavoidable technicalities, but damn if he isn't right up there with the best of the previous laureates. He stands on the fragile battle line between the increasingly collaborative, resurgent and belligerent despots and free peoples still believing in (more or less) liberal democracy.
A trained lawyer at a time when law seemed like a joke, he turned to comedy and... Ukrainians and all the rest of us should feel so lucky that he chose to run for office and win.
Today in Labor History September 4, 1970: Socialist Salvador Allende was elected President of Chile. As president, he tried to nationalize major industries, expand education and improve conditions for the working class. On September 11, 1973 (the other 9/11), he was ousted in a coup by Augusto Pinochet, leading to a dictatorship that lasted until 1990. Thousands of workers, socialists, union members and activists were killed, including folk singer Victor Jara, who continued to sing, as his torturers mashed his fingers and demanded that he play his guitar. The coup and dictatorship were supported by the CIA, and by President Nixon, and by the Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, who later won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Here's is an interview & rare live footage of Jara singing his classic: El Derecho de Vivir en Paz.
sound familiar?: "Welbe comes back about a year later, once again in prison, and says, “You know what, that plan is not going to work anymore, but I've got a better plan because I've actually figured out the secrets to the philosopher’s stone and now I can actually just make gold and silver myself. All I need is some start-up money from the Crown or Parliament to get it off the ground.” Needless to say, it didn’t work, and his trail goes cold at that point. " - Prof. Philip J. Stern talking about his new book "Empire, Incorporated"

I want to put this in perspective for anyone else in #Canada: this has happened within less than a century. These are 1665 human beings who would have otherwise been elders today. The United States spends $500,000 for every enemy soldier killed and only $53 annually on the victims of poverty.
Not a tragic mix-up, though. That military spending helps maintain control of resources and markets for the richest Americans, whereas an army of poor people benefits them, too, by keeping wages low.
Recommended The Jakarta Method in a Hacker News thread about book recommendations. Interested to see how *that* goes.
By the way, I still think The Jakarta Method should be required reading for every US citizen (and potentially beyond).
Americanos are pissed that they can't have bananas year round if #degrowth/ #communism/ #anarchy happens. Banana availability has its roots in imperialism, destructive monocropping, and grueling agricultural labor/slavery.
We literally have a word for client states of #imperialism for the export of bananas: banana republic. Banana imports to the West is drenched in the blood of thousands massacred for your God damn commodities. In the #Philippines, companies told this instruction to banana worker syndicalists: “turn them into fertilizers for the bananas.”
On top of that is the steep ecological and carbon costs to actually shipping the damn things. Do you really need bananas year round?
There's also the problem of monocropping which destroys the biodiversity of forests to make way for plantations, even if we discount the slave labor. Monocropping has made Cavendish plantations at high risk of diseases. It could very well be that Cavendishes would become an endangered species just like the Gros Michel after nature erases its scourge. Maybe the extinction of the Cavendish is already a matter of time, rendering banana disocorse moot.
Americanos just don't understand that in a liberated world, maybe people won't be breaking their backs for some Americano to get their god damn banana. Of course degrowth/communism/anarchism means that relations to luxuries will change.
Besides, Cavendishes suck. They literally taste terrible. Y'all seriously live like this? Lakatan, Señorita, and Sabah tastes way better. Yeah, they can't be exported, boohoo. Not everything has to be a commodity, much less to please some Americano half a world away.
“How much on average does the military spend on Viagra each year?” asked Pittsburgh Representative Summer Lee.
“I don’t have that figure,” DOD director Tenaglia responded.
“About $41.6 million,” Lee responded. “Do you know how many bridges in my district of Pittsburgh could be repaired with that amount?” she continued, noting that the city’s Fern Hollow Bridge, which collapsed recently, would cost about $25.3 million to rebuild—a fraction of how much the Department of Defense has apparently spent on the erectile dysfunction pill.
