Algorithmic Futures Policy Lab

This afternoon at Water Operations for Uncertain Futures 2023 #AFPLwouf23, we've taken on the role of various stakeholders and mapped out how we might carry out the #water concept pitches from initiation to adaptation. The takeaways? The considerations involved in shaping #water #futures are #complex and involve many interactions between #society, #environment, #technology, #industry, and #governance. Some things are easy to #adapt and #change – but on the whole, creating #robust and #equitable #systems in this space takes time, conversations, many knowledges, hard choices, and careful planning. And whether we know it or not, we all depend on the care people in this space take in creating robust water futures for us all.

#AFPLwouf23 is the third workshop in the Algorithmic Futures Policy Lab series, which has been made possible with the support of the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. ANU Institute for Water Futures and #OneBasinCRC have taken the lead in planning and supporting this workshop. As your project gains experience with the stuff, you can document everything you've learned and share it - and learn from what other share in turn. You can expand into related fields - once you have lots of experience running a biochar kiln, perhaps it's time to look into working with a pottery, brick, or glassmaking kiln?

#permaculture #industry

Angle

You can start specifying your #biochar by particle size, by the temperature it's cooked at, by what it's cooked from - there are a surprising number of variables, here. You can look for more applications for the stuff - what happens if you add it to clay for ceramics? Try and treat wood or textiles with it? Etc, etc?

#permaculture #industry

Angle

If you want to get really fancy, you can set up a really sophisticated system and start making wood vinegar and wood gas while you're at it, and find uses for those. You can seek horizontal and vertical integration, and have a larger scale setup to share with neighboring projects, source your inputs from waste biomass from nearby projects, supply #biochar to said projects, etc.

#permaculture #industry

Angle

As you get more experienced with the process and start finding more uses for the stuff, you can see about setting up a proper kiln or retort system to make higher quality #biochar and capture the waste heat for stuff - for example, if you're already heating with a wood stove, you can make a simple retort and cook biochar in it while you heat your house.

#permaculture #industry

Angle

Okay, so! #Biochar as a #permaculture #industry. I think it's a good fit, because the input, biomass, is readily available in most permaculture projects, and the output, biochar, is readily usable in most permaculture projects. You can make the stuff by just digging a pit, burning your biomass, and then putting the fire out once it's reached the right point, and you can use it for waste management, soil amendment, water filtration, and all sorts of stuff.

Angle

Okay! So, that's a start on the subject. I'm going to call it a night for now, but in a day or two I'm going to expand on this with some examples, starting with one of the perfect industries for permaculture - #biochar! Feel free to message me about it if I forget. XD

#Permaculture #Industry

Angle

Finally, principle twelve! Moving up and down the value added chain and pursuing vertical integration is a start. Having a variety of yields so that you can address a wider portion of the economy's needs is also good. Trialing and adopting new technologies, improving upon old ones, and adapting to the changing circumstances around you are also all good. This one, more than anything else, requires experience, I think. XD

#Permaculture #Industry

Angle

Principle eleven, I'd argue, calls for much the same approach as principles eight and ten. Though, cross training people so they can work on multiple related processes, or being able to use tools for multiple processes, might be worthwhile? Worth looking into, IMO. :/

#Permaculture #Industry

Angle

Principle ten we've effectively already covered - use a variety of yields and outputs, and processes too where possible. Straightforwards, but far from trivial - this kind of thing can be difficult and expensive, and potentially very inefficient. I'm not entirely sure how to square all this, but I think it can be done.

#Permaculture #Industry

Angle

For principle nine, this is again straightforwards, but not exactly easy. Industry is generally more efficient the larger it is, and when building a factory can already take years, slowing things down is really painful. I think it's still possible to find ways to do this beneficially, but it's not going to be easy - and it's going to resemble cottage industry more than anything else, IMO. :/

#Permaculture #Industry

Angle

For principle eight, I'd recommend trying to build a robust set of interconnections - multiple sources for inputs and outputs, diversified processes and yields, #OpenSource, etc. Also, moving up the value added chain and developing uses for your own yields, and maybe sources for your own inputs, for additional redundancy.

#Permaculture #Industry

Angle

So, for example, if you exist in a place where the duck curve is a major thing, setting up some energy intensive industry to run during the day when all that solar energy is at a huge surplus, then switching over to a less energy intensive industry to run later, perhaps even using the waste heat generated earlier.

#Permaculture #Industry

Angle

Principles seven and eight are really complex, and hard to apply, but really useful once you understand them IMO. For number seven, this would mean starting out by studying the resources, desired yields, available solutions, and surrounding constraints of the space that you're working in and designing your operation accordingly.

#Permaculture #Industry

Angle

principles five and six are straightforwards, but far from easy. Finding ways to recycle waste products, or turn them into yields that can be used elsewhere is a perennial desire, problem, and frustration of industry. I think it's worth it, but I don't expect it to be easy. Another thing where #OpenSource is worthwhile, to help bring the costs of this down and maximize the benefits for the system as a whole.

#Permaculture #Industry

Angle

The second and third principles are pretty straightforwards, but there are some details worth mentioning - recapturing waste energy from processes, and obtaining secondary and diversified yields, for example. I would also focus on more abstract yields that help build the system, like experience and knowledge - hence my focus on #opensource.

#Permaculture #Industry

Angle

I'm not entirely sure how to go about this, but I have a few ideas. We could start by going through the principles and applying them one by one, for example. I'd argue that making as much open source as possible helps a lot with the first principle, for example, and to a lesser extent the fourth and seventh. :/

#Permaculture #Industry

Angle

So, I've been thinking about this lately. Even the most serious permaculture advocates will still use metal tools, right? Just too useful to give up. But in order to have metal tools, you need to have industry, and industry isn't very permaculture... So, what if we found a way to *make* it permaculture? :/

So the #LabourParty wants (rightly) to do something about the #investment crisis in UK #industry & #manufacturing;

while investment growth has largely stagnated in the UK, across the channel it continues (investment in France has grown by around 25% since #brexit)

re-engaging with the #singlemarket is job No.1!

Chart: UK business investment growth has stalled; Real index, rebased Q.2/2010 - 100.

Trend shows investment would have been approaching 200 on rebased scale (i.e. would have doubles in 12 years), but real investment growth stalled in 2016 at 140, in 2020 dropped to less than 120, and last year only rose to around 140 (60 points, or 30% lower than the pre-Brexit trend)

If you’re searching for a new job, it’s worth looking in different industries — instead of doing more of the same elsewhere, or in the other direction, switching to a completely new occupation. Maybe your current #industry is saturated, but a different industry might require your #skills.

This searchable #chart shows the industries that people work in, given a specific job.

"And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?"

Quarry Bank Mill, near the village of Styal in Cheshire, UK.

#Photography #IndustrialPhotography #Industry #IndustrialRevolution #Architecture

Photograph of the windows of Quarry Bank Mill, Styal. 28 windows in total, arranged in rows of 7 windows. Each window has a slightly rounded brick top, with black painted frame, and white painted metal segments holding in small panes of glass. Under each window is a light coloured stone ledge. The walls are brick, of varying colours. The final two columns of windows are separated from the others by long rectangular metal drain pipes.

"Staffing agencies exist to complement traditional in-house recruiters. Companies use staffing agencies to keep a perpetual underclass of lesser-paid contractors alongside their cushy salaried workers. Staffing agencies react to what their customers profess to want, so in some ways their behavior is just a reflection of the state of the IT industry at large."

And these numbers are for #Africa tech! Imagine the numbers for small businesses in #agriculture (not talking #GMO here), small #Industry (e.g. transformation of local products for local consumption...), healthcare (outside healthtech), etc. they almost don't exist...

So yeah, the future is digital, Africa will "leapfrog" into digital... But African will have to get used to not eating anymore...

Do #job or #recruitment agencies tailored to #academia people moving into #industry ? All the ones I know are either for tradies or for people already in industry. Not looking (yet, as for now) but that sounds like a good service to know about (and a good niche for startups if there aren't).

I'm thinking about people who might take a look at your résumé and suggest better ways of writing it, where to send it, what skills to work on...

Went to the #Chicago #museum of #science and #industry. They had an ice wall.

I thought it was pretty cool.

#dadjokes

A wall made of ice with peoples hand prints from holding their hand on it for a long time melting the ice. Sign next to it says "extreme cold, please protect the ice wall by only using your hands to touch it."

Love this appraisal from Gregg:

“ Even though it is no longer a problem — it is being used to market remediation products pointing to the fact that websites fail this provision (which has no effect on accessibility today) but they can be sued if they don’t buy their product to detect and fix it.”
