Lower-level elites had their own section of the city, while commoners lived in yet another. Commoners literally lived in the dirt, in single-room semi-subterranean homes dug into the soil, surrounded by trash dumps. Large storage pits, possibly for grain, were not attached to any individual household, suggesting that elites taxed and centrally controlled grain production. Elite tombs were filled with elaborate grave goods, including jade axes, pottery, lacquer, and turquois-inlaid shells. Commoners were buried in small graves with nothing but a few ornaments.
The city also featured yet another walled enclosure, this one possibly a ritual site where city elites performed astronomical observations to calculate a sacred calendar. The presence of walls and absence of anything related to daily life suggest another part of the city that was closed off to commoners.

It can be difficult to understand just how un-equal our modern human society really is.
We often talk about the 1% versus the 99%, but that’s not even close to an accurate ratio for the true scale of inequality — because the “haves” in our society (our owners, our rulers) do not possess a mere one hundred times more power and wealth than the rest of us. The disparity is FAR greater than that.
Through consolidation and monopolies and lobbying and bribery and corruption, within the past four decades the wealthy and powerful have achieved complete dominance over us and over the world we live in. It’s not an exaggeration to say they own and control virtually EVERYTHING.
They own the corporations. They own the resources. They own the governments. They own the major media. They own (most of) the Internet.
And what are they doing with all that wealth and power? Simple. They’re grabbing more. And more and more and more. They will *never* have enough.
In the meantime, while they continue hoarding, our owners are also working to convince you and me that everything is okay, that the status quo is just fine, that there’s nothing to worry about. They want to keep the stores open, the factories running, the airlines flying, and the cruise ships sailing.
The longer our rulers can keep assuring everyone that Business As Usual is the way to go, the more money they will make. And they believe (though it's likely a delusion) that with enough money and enough power, they and their descendants will be able to survive and even thrive in the 3°C to 5°C world of the future.
I’m not sure at this point if anything can be done about all this. It may be too late. But I hope I’m wrong.

My spouse worked for a short-term rental company, an #AirBNB competitor, and wow did I hear an earful from them about the kinds of chaos these places can cause. One factor driving away the individual homeowner posting their extra 'crash space' online vs. the massive conglomerates is how little help the companies offer when something goes wrong (i.e. a renter sets off fireworks in your house while you're renting it out). Giant property owners can eat those kinds of losses and don't have sentimental attachment to their homes.

There are probably many ways to do this, and they start with congress/parliament. My idea was to set a base wealth tax, and empower the CB raise the rate when inflation is high.

As Martha Gill points out, a call for a Minister for Men, misunderstands the prejudice & problems men *do* encounter: its not about gender (for them), its about #racism & as importantly, #class!
Don' be thinking UK's #politics is somehow post-class... wherever I look I still see the shadow of class-based discrimination, but its become the prejudice that cannot be talked about in 'polite society'.
So lets be clear: much of the UK's #inequality is a class issue!
Its another bit of classic middle-class #political bias - with a reasonable occupational #pension to add to the state one (although this is a declining situation & another aspect of the #pensions crisis), then the two together can often be (for a couple especially) pretty comfortable.
If you want to see this demographic's market power - look at Saga cruises & the range of services trying to capture the 'grey pound'.
But its one more aspect of UK's #inequality problem!

This story is a blast from the past for me. I shared an apartment with Ben Franklin, who tried to sue over this law, and met Remington Alessi through the #Occupy movement in #Houston. He became a lawyer after that movement helped him see the injustice inherent in the system, and likes to say he's been arrested more often than most of his clients. Cheers to the folks fighting for what should be a basic human right.
