"#Capitalism, #Marx said, never went beyond those economic models where a few dominate a majority. Capitalism just replaced the dichotomies of master/slave and lord/serf with a new one. A dominating and exploiting minority was still there, but it had a new name: employers...
The masses of people are subordinated"
💰 Some Democrats Are Trying to Preemptively Outlaw a Billionaire Tax
(… well wealth taxes are kinda hard to administer, if you’ve got income you have some cash for the IRS, Twitter might really be worth as much as a Superfund site on the other hand)
However its done (and there are quite a few options from reforming current instruments to a 'new' #wealthtax), it certainly looks like its time to deal with excessive wealth accumulation at the top of many societies - this sort of #inequality serves no-ones interests (not even the ultra wealthy, really, even if they cannot see that).
I am HERE for the COVID example! Thank you Dr. Krahn! Notes that COVID has amplified pre-existing disparities, suggests that not enough attention was paid to these exacerbations. I often think about why, given that it is within reach, aren't we living in a poverty-free utopia.
This new film by George Monbiot promises to share some answers to that question:
But he needs a little help with funding:
Though there are obvious differences, modern workers in certain low-paying, dead-end jobs can feel trapped and exploited, similar to Roman slaves.
The term #WageSlavery is used to describe individuals who, despite not being called slaves, may find themselves in precarious, underpaid positions with limited opportunities.

#USA #Poverty #ChildPoverty #Inequality: "The headline from the report is that the expiration of the one-year pandemic-era Child Tax Credit and the lack of one-off stimulus payments resulted in child poverty being much higher in 2022 than 2021. This headline is certainly true, though some of the specific numbers involved may not be totally accurate because the CPS-ASEC does a poor job of accurately estimating the uptake of tax credit benefits.
Nonetheless, below, I use the microdata files that the Census puts out to produce some figures about who made up the poor in 2021 and 2022."
What is the #communist hypothesis? In its generic sense, given in its
canonic Manifesto, ‘communist’ means, first, that the logic of #class—the
fundamental #subordination of #labour to a dominant class, the arrangement
that has persisted since Antiquity—is not inevitable; it can be
overcome. The communist hypothesis is that a different #collective
organization is practicable, one that will eliminate the #inequality of
#wealth and even the division of labour. The #private appropriation of
massive fortunes and their transmission by inheritance will disappear.
The existence of a #coercive #state, separate from #civil #society, will no
longer appear a necessity: a long process of reorganization based on a
#free #association of #producers will see it withering away.
‘#Communism’ as such denotes only this very general set of intellectual
representations. It is what Kant called an Idea, with a regulatory
function, rather than a programme. It is foolish to call such communist
principles #utopian; in the sense that I have defined them here they are
intellectual patterns, always actualized in a different fashion. As a
pure Idea of #equality, the communist hypothesis has no doubt existed
since the beginnings of the state. As soon as mass action opposes #state
#coercion in the name of #egalitarian #justice, rudiments or fragments of
the hypothesis start to appear. Popular #revolts—the #slaves led by
#Spartacus, the #peasants led by #Müntzer—might be identified as practical
examples of this ‘communist invariant’. With the French Revolution, the
communist hypothesis then inaugurates the epoch of political modernity.
Someone just ponted this out:
"Rishi sunak is worth 750m. Financial advisers would say to keep roughly 20% as cash. That’s 150m... if he put it in a run of the mill cash savings account he would earn 7.5m a month … he could basically keep taking out and not lose his initial investment … he could for instance personally give the 2.1m people on pip an extra £35 a month which could be the difference between that person eating or not...something to think about"

Lower-level elites had their own section of the city, while commoners lived in yet another. Commoners literally lived in the dirt, in single-room semi-subterranean homes dug into the soil, surrounded by trash dumps. Large storage pits, possibly for grain, were not attached to any individual household, suggesting that elites taxed and centrally controlled grain production. Elite tombs were filled with elaborate grave goods, including jade axes, pottery, lacquer, and turquois-inlaid shells. Commoners were buried in small graves with nothing but a few ornaments.
The city also featured yet another walled enclosure, this one possibly a ritual site where city elites performed astronomical observations to calculate a sacred calendar. The presence of walls and absence of anything related to daily life suggest another part of the city that was closed off to commoners.
According to research from the Institute for Fiscal Studies, it is where in the UK you're born, along with the financial status of your family in terms of wealth, income and especially unearned income (inheritance, intergenerational wealth transfers etc.), that largely shapes your life prospects. They do so far more than education, which is usually positioned as the main driver of social mobility.
'Sons from the most affluent families were on average around 19 percentiles higher in the adult earnings rankings than sons from the most disadvantaged families, while for daughters this figure was significantly higher at 27 percentiles.'
'While the educational attainment of ethnic minorities growing up in families eligible for [free school meals] is often higher than that of their White majority peers, their earnings outcomes show no such advantage.'

It can be difficult to understand just how un-equal our modern human society really is.
We often talk about the 1% versus the 99%, but that’s not even close to an accurate ratio for the true scale of inequality — because the “haves” in our society (our owners, our rulers) do not possess a mere one hundred times more power and wealth than the rest of us. The disparity is FAR greater than that.
Through consolidation and monopolies and lobbying and bribery and corruption, within the past four decades the wealthy and powerful have achieved complete dominance over us and over the world we live in. It’s not an exaggeration to say they own and control virtually EVERYTHING.
They own the corporations. They own the resources. They own the governments. They own the major media. They own (most of) the Internet.
And what are they doing with all that wealth and power? Simple. They’re grabbing more. And more and more and more. They will *never* have enough.
In the meantime, while they continue hoarding, our owners are also working to convince you and me that everything is okay, that the status quo is just fine, that there’s nothing to worry about. They want to keep the stores open, the factories running, the airlines flying, and the cruise ships sailing.
The longer our rulers can keep assuring everyone that Business As Usual is the way to go, the more money they will make. And they believe (though it's likely a delusion) that with enough money and enough power, they and their descendants will be able to survive and even thrive in the 3°C to 5°C world of the future.
I’m not sure at this point if anything can be done about all this. It may be too late. But I hope I’m wrong.

Think ill of corporations all you like: they only care about lining the pockets of their already-wealthy shareholders. They corrupt our governments, exploit workers, and make the economy grotesquely unfair. They should be regulated, taxed, etc.
But on inflation, spare some blame for the upper income people who keep buying from them no matter how high the price goes (or what evil the seller has wrought)

Top story: Short-term rental platforms, like VRBO and #AirBNB, are disrupting the fabric of American life by bringing violence to our neighborhoods and contributing to unaffordable #housing and rental prices. Simultaneously, they're also pouring lots of money into urban economies. https://www.texasobserver.org/short-term-rentals-airbnb-vrbo-neighborhoods/
Take care of the people, and the economy will take care of itself
"Ultimately, however we measure it there is no prima facie reason to believe that providing for people is unaffordable or will do harm to the economy. To believe otherwise is to deny a substantial volume of empirical evidence to the contrary."
Thanks for getting me to look this up and read.
My spouse worked for a short-term rental company, an #AirBNB competitor, and wow did I hear an earful from them about the kinds of chaos these places can cause. One factor driving away the individual homeowner posting their extra 'crash space' online vs. the massive conglomerates is how little help the companies offer when something goes wrong (i.e. a renter sets off fireworks in your house while you're renting it out). Giant property owners can eat those kinds of losses and don't have sentimental attachment to their homes.

Intergenerational #inequality has always been evident (as one would expect; people accrue assets as they get older), but its getting worse.... for the rich this can be reduced by transfers & inheritance, but for the rest #pensioner poverty beckons....
This is just one more example of how the UK is a society run by the rich, for the rich, with scant regard of the social costs or misery such #class driven politics produces.
Inequality, corruption, risky asset bubbles, moral decadence, and other problems are interconnected crises that all stem from China’s crony capitalism. (...) Common prosperity should be understood as a shorthand for Xi’s attempts to rescue China from its Gilded Age. (...) Of course, Xi cannot openly admit that his country faces problems similar to those that have shaped the United States, its capitalist rival.

When central banks (CB) attack the demand side of inflation, they should employ at least some tactics that target upper incomes or wealth. After all, those targets are most responsible for demand-side inflation:
Plus we have extreme #inequality.
There are probably many ways to do this, and they start with congress/parliament. My idea was to set a base wealth tax, and empower the CB raise the rate when inflation is high.

Don' be thinking UK's #politics is somehow post-class... wherever I look I still see the shadow of class-based discrimination, but its become the prejudice that cannot be talked about in 'polite society'.
So lets be clear: much of the UK's #inequality is a class issue!
Its another bit of classic middle-class #political bias - with a reasonable occupational #pension to add to the state one (although this is a declining situation & another aspect of the #pensions crisis), then the two together can often be (for a couple especially) pretty comfortable.
If you want to see this demographic's market power - look at Saga cruises & the range of services trying to capture the 'grey pound'.
But its one more aspect of UK's #inequality problem!

Our Economy Thrives on inequality
Since 2020, the richest 1 percent has captured nearly two-thirds of all new wealth globally — almost twice as much money as the rest of the world’s population. At the beginning of last year, it was estimated that 10 billionaire men possessed six times more wealth than the poorest three billion people on earth. In the United States, the richest 10 percent of households own more than 70 percent of the country’s assets.
