A frightening figure from Gillian Tett's weekly FT Magazine column:

McKinsey's estimate of the 'value' of the world's paper #wealth (the 'speculative, unrealised price' of all financial assets) - is around $160TN - approx. 600% of global #GDP.

Behind this lies asset-price #inflation (in 2000 assets were 470% of global GDP) & low interest rate credit to buy those assets.

But, #interestrates are going up... so where do asset prices go & will this prompt a massive deflationary global fire sale?

it is a recession engineered by a callous #Tory government in hock to its friends in #financialservices who think #inflation must be 'squeezed' out of the system at any cost (to others, that is);

this will be a recession made by policy, not be economic circumstance & at the centre is the #JeremyHunt's views on what & what is not acceptable to his chums.

Today in Labor History May 26, 1851: Stevedores and longshoreman struck in San Francisco. This was the first documented longshore strike in California. They were demanding six dollars per day, which was a lot in those days. However, the gold rush caused massive inflation and six dollars was not much in light of that. They also were fighting for a nine-hour work day and one dollar per hour overtime. In the wake of this successful strike, organizers formed the Riggers’ and Stevedores’ Association.

"In March 2023, the number of people experiencing emergency levels of food insecurity grew to 4.9 million – nearly half of the country’s population. Haiti’s food inflation is among the highest in the world, reaching 53 percent in 2022. Shocks in the global food and fuel markets will likely increase food prices, as Haiti is heavily reliant on food imports."

https://www.rescue.org/article/haiti-political-instability-gang-violence-and-disease

#inflation #climateChange #haiti

Its all very well blaming the global context for #inflation, but what the data shows is that the contribution made to inflation by goods with a low imported element is rising;

goods & services made in the UK, using UK sourced inputs are increasingly significant element in the UK's persistent inflation.

You might want (as the BoE & #JeremeyHunt periodically do) to blame this on #workers' pay rises, but it is profits that seem to be less likely to lag prices rises...

#greedflation revealed?

Chart: The inflation rate of goods and services with little import intensity has risen to its highest level; Contributions to overall CPI inflation (percentage points); items where imports account for less that 10% of final price.

Chart shows contribution oscillating around 1% until 2014, when it falls to just over (and around) 0.5% until 2021, then climbs to current level of over 1.5% contribution (of inflation % points)

Here's @RichardJMurphy asking a vital Q.:

If global #foodprices have decline by 20%, why have UK's food prices gone up by 19%?

As he rightly notes, we would expect a lag due to forward purchasing, but the recognition of the global context by #supermarkets & in the #inflation calculations of the BoE seems oddly absent (or at least subdued).

His key Q. is why is this?

As headline Consumer Prices Index inflation rate falls to 8.7% today (although food inflation is still an eye-watering 19%, impacting the poorest the most), here's a handy guide to inflation I missed yesterday.

#Inflation #Inequality #Poverty #UKPolitics #Economics

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/may/23/cpi-stagflation-uk-price-rises-key-inflation-terms?CMP=firstedition_email

From the FT:

'The world’s 1,200 biggest public companies collectively issued $326.7bn in dividends in the first quarter of 2023, a rise of 12% on the same period a year ago, according to a quarterly report from fund manager Janus Henderson'!

So while you & I are suffering a #Costoflivingcrisis, #investors are, in cash terms keeping up with #inflation, unlike #workers (even those that have managed to secure raises).

No wonder many investors cannot quite see what the current problem(s) might be

#AndrewBailey admits the BoE's #economic modelling hasn't predicted either the acceleration of #inflation nor its persistence at a high(er) rate;

the MPC has reduced the weighting of the formal modelling, to be balanced by what? Tarot cards; finger in the air; 'our best, informed guesses'?

As controlling inflation is (now) what the BoE's 'does' this is a major admission & saying 'we have very big lessons to learn' is an understatement.

Overpaid #bankers aren't the ones that suffer of course!

"Narkotikaprisutvecklingen i Sverige 1988-2022", ny studie från CAN: https://www.can.se/publikationer/narkotikaprisutvecklingen-i-sverige-1988-2022/
#prisstatistik #inflation

Inflation driven by economic instability, fallout from war in Ukraine and COVID have made jollof rice an expensive meal.
How inflation made West Africa’s prized jollof rice a pricey meal

The British are battening down the hatches on #inflation, with 60% (of IPSOS/Mori respondents) thinking there is no chance inflation will return to 'normal' levels within the year.

You can imagine, for a party needing to call an election in the next two years, and trading on a claim for competent economic management, this is not good news.

You can bet private polling has shown this for a while & so increasingly shrill pivot to #culturewars now sort of makes a sort of desperate sense (for them)

Today, #JeremyHunt will meet #supermarket representatives to try to get them to voluntarily cap #food prices rises, as food #Inflation begins to replace #energy price rises as the main driver of the #Costoflivingcrisis.

This is where the #Tories ideological preference for self-regulation & their political survival instinct come into conflict;

Hunt doesn't want to go down the European route of price caps & regulatory intervention, but equally he knows a political disaster when he sees one!

Increasing interest rates to cool inflation assumes inflation is being driven by credit-fueled spending. But corporations are flush with cash...

Call me a conspiratorialist if you must. But when CEOs get on earnings calls and brag about how covid, war, and scare-stories about #inflation let them hike their prices and rake in never-before-seen profit margins, I think it's reasonable to blame inflation on greed, not on workers getting a couple of relief checks during the lockdown.
