Intel’s Open Source Monospace Font Looks Awesome
Between IBM Plex Mono, Hack, Fira Code, and JetBrains Mono I think we Linux users are spoilt for choice when it comes to open-source monospace fonts that look good and work great. Still, there’s always room for more, right? Intel thinks so, hence the release of Intel One Mono. This is an “expressive monospaced font family that’s built with clarity, legibility, and the needs of developers in mind.” Better yet it’s not only free to download and use but free to edit, and free to redistribute. Typography experts at Frere-Jones Type worked alongside Intel’s brand team and marketing company VMLY&R :sys_more_orange:

Nun ist Apple endlich durch: Das Intel-Zeitalter des Konzerns ist offiziell beendet, nachdem der Mac Pro mit Apple Silicon herausgebracht wurde.
Esto se refleja en los frecuentes anuncios que se han dado en los ultirmos 3 años en el area de los #Microchips y que se basan -sin evidencia alguna- en un supuesto "riesgo de seguridad nacional" para Los Esclavos Unidos.
Recordemos que hace unos años bajo la administracion Trump se acuso a varios fabricantes chinos de usar su tecnologia para espiar, recoger informacion sensible y competir deslealmente. Por ese entonces, analisis independendientes sobre diversos dispositivos electronicos provenientes del gigante asiatico llegaron a la conclusion que ninguna de las afirmaciones del gobierno eran ciertas.
Esto obviamente no detuvo el discurso ya activado y puesto a rodar en toda la prensa dominada por el #pentagono y sus socios. Desde ese momento a la fecha, mas de 600 empresas de origen chino han ido engrosando la lista de prohibiciones y sometidas a todo tipo de acusaciones, sin presentar evidencia alguna.
El objetivo real ha sido y sigue siendo, la estrangulacion de la economia y sometimiento del pais a las ordenes del pentagono.
Lamentablemente para el gobierno de Los Esclavos Unidos, los resultados de sus acciones han sido mas bien pobres y se han terminado por convertir en un verdadero balazo en su propia industria.
A pesar de los enormes subsidios y de las ventajas que presentaria su mercado, las empresas de Microchips obligadas a renunciar al mercado del Dragon Asiatico, han mostrado perdidas gigantes en el 2022... asi por ejemplo, #Intel redujo sus ganancias en mas de 60%, Samsung mas de 90%, TMSC mas de 16%, etc.
En la practica, las ventajas ofrecidas por Los Esclavos Unidos no han ayudado casi en nada a esas empresas. A tal grado que una a una estan buscando caminos para poder vadear las sanciones USAmericanas y conseguir seguir exportando al gigante asiatico o de lo contrario a mediano plazo deberan conformarse con reducirse a minimos historicos.
Por el lado opuesto, las empresas locales chinas ven una gran oportunidad en la salida de las extranjeras de la competencia... la SMIC, SMEE y todas las del sector de microchips han visto aumentar sus ganancias de hasta un 50%.
Mientras USA ofrece unos 200.k U$D en subvenciones para las empresas que se decidan a instalar fabricas dentro de la Zona de Libre Comercio de America del Norte, proceso que se ha visto mas bien lento y de resultados ambiguos; el gobierno chino realiza tambien lo suyo, fortaleciendo sus programas de apoyo a la Investigacion & Desarrollo, con sumas similares a las que esta entregando su oponente, con resultados mejores de los esperados.
La industria automovilistica china ha dado un salto, desde los grandes problemas que le habian provocado los cortes en el suministro de microchips desde occidente a una situacion de casi completa normalidad a partir del reemplazo por las empresas locales.
Esto se ha visto reflejado en las cifras. Mientras #EEUU se hunde en la lucha contra la inflacion, el desempleo, la depreciacion de sus bonos del tesoro, un crecimiento economico rosando el CERO %, China ha apretado el acelerador a fondo.
Hablar de 4 o 5% para una economia de esas dimensiones es el sueño de todos los 30 paises mas industrializados. #Japon sea quizas el pais mas golpeado por la depreciacion de los bonos del tesoro, ya que ha perdido casi un porcentaje probablemente muy superior al 20% y asi lo resiente su economia, pero sigue empecinado en seguir comprando titulos de deuda de sus jefes del pentagono.
A estos niveles, China podria convertirse en el lider economico absoluto antes de llegar al 2030

#Intel #Optane (3D XPoint memory) is incredible. I tested out an Optane H20 hybrid drive (1TB QLC, 32GB Xpoint), and while the streaming performance of XPoint was just okay (~1.5 GB/~900 MB), the IOPS were insane! 14x more than my brand-new 2TB #Solidigm drive!
Though I ran into difficulty accessing both drives of the H20, I decided to go with a standalone Optane drive. Scored a pair of 16GB M10's on eBay for $12.

It's a darn shame that Intel discontinued X-point memory. This stuff is magic.

It seems like someone at Intel has noticed that booting a 64-bit processor in 16-bit mode, then hitting it on the head to move it to 32-bit mode and then kicking it up the backside to move it to 64-bit mode was a bit excessive in 2023 (I guess we should be grateful that they no longer need the 8259 to move from "real" to "fantasy" mode).
Welcome "Simplified Intel Architecture"¹² which is trying to remove the cruft from amd64 (sorry, could not avoid the dig) which, if we want to be terribly pedantic, is going to be an issue to the following:
* BIOS manufacturers being dragged screaming and shouting into UEFI,
* people like me who use old and obscure extensions to mix potions of dubious consequences and appreciate the cruft in this game of shadows and mirrors,
* firmware manufacturers who rely on OROM processing by the BIOS to turn on their cards,

Of course the fun begins when (like Apple back in the MacPro days) you discover that tons of (U)EFI installs are 32-bit but that's a separate issue :flan_molotov:
I am somewhat miffed that Intel pushes this out after several years ago I sent them a proposal to, at least, be able to turn off extensions trivially and I am even more miffed that they are not considering my other proposal which is to actually open the µcode and make _that_ the new ISA.
Anyway, chances are that amd64 Mk.II will just be another emulated architecture on someone's better chip design (*cough* *cough* Rosetta 2…).

But yeah, the only thing that would make @AsahiLinux even faster on #AppleSilicon would be if compiling stuff would be done entirely in RAM wherever possible, leveraging 10x->1000x more IOPS and lower latency.

Can any #intel nerds explain any reason why I wouldn't want a slightly older Xenon processor with a TON of horsepower?
We've got a Dell workstation with a great GPU etc but the MB only takes Xenon, and we're seeing a bunch of cheaper Xenons cus Intel is end of lifing them for support (end of 2023), so businesses are upgrading.
But... we don't really care about that. It's a CPU not a GPU. Ain't like it really needs driver updates.
I'm not seeing any instruction sets or lacks or anything, looks like the revision after this was just cache and minor memory architecture stuff, and, woopity doo to that.
