Finished Gareth Reese's 1995 interactive fiction game Christminster. A magnificent piece which has aged very well. There are a few moments of weird adventure game logic, but mostly the puzzles are woven into a terrific story and environment. You are Christabel Spencer, more or less breaking into a male-only British college to save your brother, who has disappeared. There will be tears, deaths, secret passages, and the greatest challenge of all: eating lobster at high table. #InteractiveFiction

And the quest goes on. I hardly remember this part from my first playthrough a couple of years ago. But I have to say the director‘s cut is a big improvement over the original game.

Spring Thing countdown:

After leaving my game alone for several days, I have returned for some final checks. Thoughts:

- There is so much text! I find something to hone or economize every time I open the project.
- This game is really, really not going to be for everyone.
- I will be glad to have this game submitted; at long last I won't be able to tinker with it.

Games are due Sunday before midnight, local time.

@caad you can use and follow the #InteractiveFiction hashtag, so all the community sees you there. Welcome!

Also, we should start thinking of what hashtag to use for Spanish content.

This manifesto by @ivanpapiol put concisely all the feelings of why we are here, as opposed to "there", and why we recently block "lotoffollowers accounts" and do not participate on corporate. And most important, why we choose to create networks for the #InteractiveFiction community.

In short, The Hobbit is a seminal game in the history of video games and #InteractiveFiction. It feels fresh and different, but impossible and almost inaccessible at the same time, but it has a lot to contribute to emerging game design in the 21st century.

So, we have a twitch TV program about #InteractiveFiction news, and we play live an IF game each week. In the past session, we played The hobbit translated into Spanish.

As my colleague said: "It feels like closing a cycle, 40 years later".

What follows is a small thread about my feelings about the game...

A continued effort to characterize Zork as a six game "saga" continues with a look back at the rhetorical situation of the PDP version of Zork.

I spent tonight trying to salvage old drives to find my old #interactivefiction projects. One drive had some gems on it, but Past Brett encrypted the drive with some ancient Seagate software that messed with the files but not the directory structure. I could guess the password, but no idea if I could run anything to recover it!

Today was the first meeting of the #InteractiveFiction group I made. The players were my brother and a friend from high school. It felt good to laugh with them and write a story again. It's been at least two decades since we all sat down and did that.

Uploading the #Inform7 #SourceCode for my 2 released #parser #TextAdventure #InteractiveFiction #games prompted me to look at the code again. Still wowed by that language. I know some traditional programmers find it too strange. But as a former #C and declarative language #Prolog programmer I find it magical. And the Inform 7 #IDE is like playing an #adventure game as you write. Ridiculous fun. So... What do you feel?

Do you think letters and diaries are falling on the short side recently?

Do you agree that new consumers are less tolerant of words?

Do you have any favorite game that delivers very short letters but for high effect?

Do you prefer the letters in your plays very short, short, or long?

And how does that affect us #InteractiveFiction designers in our task? (probably this only matters when applying words to commercial projects that aspire to reach wider audiences.)

So, recently I've learned that people playing video games nowadays don't read more than 20 words straight, #InteractiveFiction friends. Where does that leave us?

Time for a new #introduction!

I'm Małgorzata, a #literary #fiction #writer with two #books traditionally published in my native language #Polish.

Currently, I #amWriting short stories in English under the working title 'Women on the Verge of Greatness'. Contemporary fiction, self-inflicted problems, lots of angst.

I am also working on an #InteractiveFiction #game in Twine. It's going slowly because I'm really bad at it. That's fine.

I'll be tooting about my progress (or lack thereof).

this is making me yearn for the completely different form for #InteractiveFiction that I've had in my mind for a while, that I was never able to get to congeal. I think I will be able to make it work, after I'm done this porn exercise. but it's unlikely to be the next puppy I rescue from my sack. and it's too bad that form wouldn't have worked for this one. *shrug*

I spent several hours reading through this still-in-progress #InteractiveFiction forum thread, driven by Daniel Stelzer, playing 1995's "Jigsaw". https://intfiction.org/t/lets-play-jigsaw/59520

I loved this game, and sunk a weekend or two immersed in the brand-new text adventure before my final year at university pulled me away, leaving my progress forever unfinished.

What a joy to revisit familiar places—including the puzzle I got stuck on (the *mandolin*? oy)—and to see so much fresh exploration and discussion.

I've been out of #InteractiveFiction long enough that I hadn't heard of "Source Code Amnesty Day." I've still got the Flight of the Hummingbird source, and I really should have published it sooner.

This also seems like an excellent opportunity to re-inflict The Atrocitron upon the world, and actually write a bit about its design instead of just dumping it in the archive and fleeing into the night.

... which is how I *released* it.

... it's still my best-reviewed work.

I'm able to be read in the game code perfectly via the interface, I just need to do some hefty patching of the emulator to support them!

Last year I released a bit of software that lets yu move around Parser based interactive fiction or text adventure games using your PC Keyboard's number pad, turning it into a sort of d-pad. So 8 is north, 6 is east, 2 is south, and so on.
It was something I wanted for years, and since I couldn't find anything like it I decided to have a go at making it myself.
I know hardly anything about coding so frankly I'm surprised it works at all. I did it in AutoHotkey script as it's simple enough for me to understand. This means it's Windows only unfortunately.
If it's something you might find useful, grab it from the IF Archive at https://www.ifarchive.org/if-archive/mapping-tools/IF_D-pad.zip.
The source code is at https://github.com/kara-louise/IF-D-pad.

Narrat 🐀 has been getting a bit of attention again so here's another intro of the engine. I think most people who might be interested in this don't actually know about it so I'm hoping to reach more people for once.

Narrat is a game engine I created to easily make interactive fiction games (narrative RPGs, visual novels etc) for desktop or browser.

I’ve worked on this game engine for some time, mostly to help friends make their games. It’s been used on a few small games, and some bigger ones in progress.

This Tumblr post has more details and could do with a signal boost as it's getting attention https://www.tumblr.com/bubbline3456/708071346693865473/narrat-engine-demo-narrat-is-a-game-engine-i?source=share
