I wish I had pics of my gramma from when she worked at Motorola

She worked on the line that made silicon wafers for chips

Sometimes she’d bring me ones that failed testing, they were fun to play with as a kid 😂

She was born and raised in a shack in Kentucky, that, when we eventually visited , we thought it was a joke. Like “where is the actual house, gramma?”

She didn’t program, send anyone to the moon, but I knew women worked on tech from an early age thanks to her.

#IWD2023 #IWD #InternationalWomensDay

Photo of Esther Mwiyeria Kioni and the text "International Women's Day 2023"
How do you envision the Internet's future?

The Internet cannot work in isolation. Every population needs a certain caliber of skills in order to take advantage of what the internet offers. This is the training that needs to be promoted and provided to many communities. Education that can help populations make meaningful gain from the presence of the Internet. The future of the Internet is such that it will not be possible for anything to happen without it. This includes banking, education, supply of basic essentials, government services, everything. That is why it is so important for populations to be prepared for this eventuality.
What do you love about the Internet?

The most important resource today is ledge. The Internet has the ability to source in the most remote parts of the world. The Internet is also an employer from wherever one is located. The biggest trick is to figure out how to take advantage of its presence.
What brought you to the Internet Society? | started working for ISOC because the mission was very attractive to me. My profession has always been in technology in different fields. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the only parameter that kept the world moving was technology (Internet in this case). That is what kept the world moving through communication, updates on how to curb the pandemic, employment etc. | kept wondering, if there was no Internet in the world, the impact of the pandemic could have been so much higher. Those who did not have this Internet advantage suffered and are still trying to catch up. This is why working for an organization that has the aim of making the Internet available to everyone was very attractive.

Why the Internet? I have watched meaningful access tQ the Internet result in tangible economic improvements in the lives of people. For example, a rural community in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, is now being supplied with electricity because a community network was launched there. This drives me to support the vision of the Internet Society.

&
How do you envision the Internet's future?

I envision the Internet being upheld as a tool for advancement and not a threat. I envision our future Internet being a tool for economic and social empowerment that is safe for all to benefit from in an equitable manner. What brought you to the Internet Society?

I started working with the Internet Society because I saw that our hearts beat for the same cause, to ensure that a valuable resource such as the Internet is made available to everyone.

Anne works as a Community Manager at The Alan Turing Institute.

Why the Internet?

The Internet—and its pipelines, protocols, and constitutive infrastructure—should be for everyone. All the fields that rely on it: from open source software to social media cannot forget that creating projects meant to be for "everyone" exclude communities by default.

How do you envision the Internet's future?

An ideal global Internet does not exclude anyone, as well as enables mindful use.
What brought you to the Internet Society? I was an Early Career Fellow in 2022 with the Internet Society. As a researcher of open source communities and politics of infrastructure, I was interested in expanding my knowledge directly to internet infrastructure that belies both, which developed into a project about the politics of Internet satellites.

The year is 1736. Elizabeth Blackwell is 29. Her husband is in debtor’s prison. She has a small child to feed. More from Barbara Alice Mann on how appalled Europeans were at Native women's power, and how they erased Native women from history:

#InternationalWomensDay #Indigenous

…in the often fractious discussions of the extent of Native American contributions to modern Euro – American culture, the glaring omission of women continues almost utterly unaddressed…Worse, from the European perspective, was the level of political clout wielded by woodlands women. The sixteenth – century Spaniards in La Florida (the whole American southwest) were nonplussed by matrilineage and the cacicas (female chiefs) with whom they were forced to deal…Spanish frustration was not a little focused on Guale females, who undermined patriarchal tampering with Guale culture…In 1724, the Jesuit missionary Joseph Francois Lafitau recorded in astonishment that Haudenosaunee women were “the souls of the councils…” Judicial affairs so entirely belonged to women that any woodlands man who wished to become a jurist or a negotiator had first to have been “made a woman” in order to be qualified for the job…

European colonizers might've interpreted Attakullakulla's question, "where are your women?" as "where is your property?"

But from a #Native, this question meant something more like "where are your leaders?"

Scholar Barbara Alice Mann (Ohio Bear Clan Seneca) writes:

"In 1757, the great #Cherokee speaker and chief Atagulkalu (Attakullakulla) arrived at a meeting in Charles Town, South Carolina, but he hesitated to conduct business with its all-male European council. Prodded by the Europeans to get busy, he turned impatiently to Governor William Henry Lyttelton and demanded, 'But where are your women?'"

#Choctaw women traditionally wore a buckskin skirt, mocs and tattoos. And if it was too cold for tattoos, they'd put on a feather cape. UHHHHH AWESOME. We call it a kasmo. It looks like this:

A Choctaw woman surrounded by skyscrapers, wearing a turkey feather cape, barefoot in the street.
Same thing but a view from the back, emphasizing the layers of huge feathers.

Feels weird “celebrating” international women’s day with so much regression in women’s rights this past year. #InternationalWomensDay

On this #InternationalWomensDay, I am reminded of the courage my mom had when running for our rural south school board back in the 80s as the first ever woman candidate.

She won.

I remember handing out these cards to voters, without an understanding of the importance of the moment. As I grew older, I gained perspective and respect for her choice.

It wasn’t easy. She fought to make mother’s voices heard in the board room. I’m proud to say she paved the way for the many that followed. 🦸‍♀️

A candidate card for my mother, Gale Sikes, from the 1980s. It reads “* Team worker * Concerned * Dedicated * Willing to Serve” along each corner. In the middle, “Vote For GALE SIKES, Cabot School Board, Position #3”

"Womanhood is traditionally associated with birth and creation. But before every new creation, one has to first dismantle of what currently is." a motorcycle metaphor for #IWD2023 #InternationalWomensDay.
See alt text for full quote and attribution.

Five women motorcycle riders in power poses around a dismantled motorcycle that is being rebuilt. They are in the garage of Alternate Adventures in Belize. Here is the message that goes with this photo on Instagram: "Womanhood is traditionally associated with birth and creation. But before every new creation, one has to first dismantle of what currently is. Breakdown precedes rebuild. In solidarity to women around the globe that live under suppression and in admiration to the immensely courageous women who live in it and yet fight it, we remind you that women are strong and that we support you in any dismantling and rebuilding that makes this world a better, safer and more fair place for us, women.
It’s our day today, International Women’s Day!!"
-- Dual Sport Emma (of Alternative Adventures in Belize) on Instagram

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, 8th March 2023, via the hellsite:

"And with a disturbing rise in anti-transgender hate here in Canada and around the world recently, I want to be very clear about one more thing: Trans women are women. We will always stand up to this hate – whenever and wherever it occurs."

#InternationalWomensDay is as good a day as any to thank @nova, @quintessence, and the awesome team for the community they've created here at Hachyderm.

The proof point? It's the Local timeline. Whenever I need a little more content than I'm getting from my followees, I can hop over to Local...invariably, I see interesting things from interesting people.

This speaks to great leadership and to the culture and community they've created.

Thank you!

In honor of #InternationalWomensDay I would like to remind every woman of the (not so) secret weapon we possess: the ability to describe a period in excruciating detail. Here are some good example phrases for strategic deployment:

Cramps are like...remember the chest bursting alien in Alien? But in your underpants.

It's basically Shark Week. Lots of blood and you don't know who the next target of wrath will be until it happens.

Do you remember the elevator in The Shining?

That is the bitter pill we must all swallow…but I regard these pills as tonics quite essential to one’s mental salvation." https://www.themarginalian.org/2019/02/27/harriet-hosmer-figuring/ #InternationalWomensDay

Boys will be boys when boys are what we have been taught that boys are—whereas girls end up being no more than an invective when they help themselves to more than their allotted corner. Sometimes, women’s rights come down to equal rights to be loud and obnoxious. Sometimes, feminism comes down to the right to be an asshole. #InternationalWomensDay #IWD #BoysWillBeBoys #WomensRights #GenderEquality #feminism #AbFab #HerNominess

Today we celebrate women for a day, but in the Choctaw calendar women have their own month. It's called Tek i̱hʋshi. Women's month.

In the old ways, Choctaw civilization was among the many Indigenous North American societies that revered two spirit (trans) women as a priestly class. Fuck yeah. What a world.

When men prepared for battle (or more often, for stickball, which is how our ancestors handled most disputes), they'd power up by painting their faces with menstrual blood, while the women stayed up all night making fetishes to curse the opponents.

Hard. As. Nails.

Plus, Choctaw women went hard with tattoos. Absolutely not to be fucked with.

For #InternationalWomensDay I am keeping my mouth shut, and reading what all the women in the hashtag are saying. As one should do more frequently than one day a year.

Tek i̱nittak na yokpa! ♀️
Happy International Women's Day! ♀️

Extra blessings especially to all you trans and/or Indigenous women.

In tradish Choctaw culture, your clan was the family of your mother's mother's mother. The clan's oldest living elder was the clan mother. Clan mothers were like the Godfather. All of society answered to them. They held veto power over laws. Even chiefs couldn't fw them.
