Next was an interesting talk by @guidonld on #IoT and the #law at #UNSW. The combined physical, digital, and cloud nature of IoT makes them particularly interesting to analyze from a legal perspective, and this talk goes on a tour of a variety of issues https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ph5aaeVjJLM (4/11)

Quick overview:

1. Activate the sensor.

2. Input the information from the sensor into the LoRaWan console. I use the Helium network. Pay for credits. (There are Helium gateways nearby).

3. Set up a flow from the Helium console to Datacake for processing.

4. Set up an integration from Datacake to Pipedream. Webhook trigger to send data to Mastodon.

Most of the services have presets for all these connections to make it easy.

Here's a picture of my temperature / humidity sensor. 🐉

I'm always amazed by anything connected to a radio. This low power transceiver is in the Industrial Scientific and Medical Band (ISM) at around 905 MHz.

It's magical thinking about radio waves bouncing around carrying information.

LoRaWan flow to Datacake.

I like Helium network's console interface for visualizing how things connect.

I also like the name Datacake. Yummy!

I have a relative who didn't understand this project -- I deployed the sensor on her property -- until I showed the beautiful flow diagram.

The scientific method works well when learning esoteric skills. I think I turned off uplinks from the Dragino with my first downlink. I think I have fixed with with my second, but I'll have to wait for 15 minutes to see. Research, try, wait for an observable event, then document. 🐈

My Dragino has sent 32,712 packets since Jan. 27, 2022 at 3:49 p.m. CDT. The total cost for the data credits on the Helium network has been $0.33 since start. I'm using the free plans for Datacake and Pipedream, so everything is low cost.

An immutable all-Snap Ubuntu planned for 2024 :ubuntu:

Well then - Ubuntu Linux will be ousting something unique - apart from what some might say "thousands of other Linux distros are offering" :thinkhappy:

Where to use an immutable Ubuntu? -- Academic use cases, large enterprises and such are where an immutable desktop thrives.

Better security, reliability (read-only file system), transactional updates & a very important factor: EASY ROLLBACK of changes if problems occur on updating.

Did you know? SteamOS partly utilizes the immutable approach already.

I still have the Internet Toaster... and it still works. The controller from the demo back in 1990 is long gone (as is the parallel port that drove it) but it's easy to replicate today.

The toaster makes decent toast still but there's an alarming smell from the toaster itself that says "maybe not so much, I'm old".

I do trot the toaster out once in a while for some glamor shots around Portland. It's fond of brunch, coffee, and not surprisingly, bakeries.

I've given up on individual ecosystems. They all seem broken. So unless a 'smart' thing is tagged as all three of "Works with Alexa," "Works with Google Home," and "Works with Apple HomeKit," then I don't buy it. There are some things that work with all three! At home, my automation is done using iOS and HomeKit, and my voice commands are via Alexa. #IoT https://www.androidauthority.com/google-smart-home-3319869/

Hi there, dear curious being!

You can find me under the names of sowa (Polish for owl) or sowi (short version for hard-for-non-Polish sowiszcze). I avoid using my given name. I use he/his/him pronouns generally. I'm from #Poland, so I know #Polish (#polski) as my native tongue, but use #English way more often, at least on the Internet. I'm learning #Finnish (#suomi) using tools like #Duolingo.

My wife and I have been taking care of #bunny (well, plural should be here) for many years and currently, I'm a #bundad of four #rabbit(s). I can tell you quite a lot about them and show you a lot of their #photos. I love #parrots, too (and #birds in general).

I like a good #Meme or #DadJoke. If you saw sowa on #Imgur or sowiszcze on #reddit - that was me. Also, #DarkHumor is in my domain, since I'm a #Millennial hahaha.

I'm into all things #Pokémon. This includes #Nintendo #Switch #games, #PokémonGO, #PokémonMastersEX, and #collecting #TCG #cards. I foster a small local #community of PGO players, treating #Discord as the main place of operation. I like(d) attending PGO #GOFest and #SafariZone. I've also been involved in #TheSilphRoad for a few years now.

If it runs on #electricity, it's probably a #hobby of mine. Biggest of them being, in no particular order: #IoT and #SmartHome (#HomeAssistant, #ESPHome), #SelfHosting, #PCBuilding, #3DPrinting, #3DModeling. Of course, I picked an #IT related career, so I'm a #SoftwareEngineer. I play #games on #NintendoSwitch, #Playstation, and sometimes #PC. I prefer #IndieGames or relaxing ones.

I can occasionally #vent about stuff, #driving being my main source of anger. On that note, I can be considered #neurodivergent because of my #depression and #anxiety. I try and advocate for the improvement of #MentalHealth everywhere.

Other notable hobbies of mine include #refurbishing, #reusing, #upcycling, #scrum, #agile, #dotnet, #csharp, #electronics, #diy, #fixing, #fiddling, #technology, #fantasy, #NordicMythology, #music, #Szczecin, #tinnitus, #cooking, #baking, #photography

...This said, I might also as well say that I see little chance for this happening, the globe being ruled by #oligarchs following the principal of #plutocracy and #capitalism (no, I am not a #Marxist;)) and #autocrats

Even a non-#superintelligence with access to the sensors of the #IoT will easily be aware of any threat to its existence and will find ways to circumvent the #LawsOfRobotics.

This first #GeneralArtificialIntelligence was built by humans, so...

@jstogdill …with #ActivityPub being the protocol of choice since 2018. So this feels more like coming into established groups as the newbie rather than being one among all newbies. Also, the focus for one’s interest are on different instances based upon location or technology or field of study or sociological identity or whatever. I haven’t found an #IoT or even #ComplexSystem instance, or #OlympicPennisula one. Even the person who gave us the invite to mastodon.social isn’t active 2/2
