This is such a succinct and useful summary of a lot of social science and more specifically #PoliticalEcology - so good this work has made it into the IPCC. They were very interested, had wonderful questions, and we had an inspiring conversation! I recommend this to everyone. Go read and present some key results to all audiences possible!

I wasn't involved in #IPCC but presenting it made me dive deep in this impressive 7500-page report. This is the most important document we should be reading this decade. Nothing else really matters if we don't stop fossil fuels. As the IPCC tells us, there is no feasible adaptation beyond 2°C warming!

... people’s needs — food, shelter, water, transportation — are not always explicitly connected to energy, and even when they are, there are ways to dramatically reduce the amount of energy required to meet them.

Wenn die Experten noch zuvor transparent ihre eigenen Interessen und wirtschaftlichen Verflechtungen darlegen müssen, sind die gröbsten Klippen umschifft.

So much for thru-hiking the #AppalachianTrail this year. I've been on a downward spiral since leaving my job in September 2022. I was professionally burnt out. I didn't want to keep building #backend #dotnet APIs. I also read through the latest #IPCC reports, which paint a bleak picture of our collective future. In short, I was miserable.

I quit my meds cold turkey -- #Lexapro and #Metformin -- and started downsizing my life. I got a job as an #Amazon warehouse worker, but left after a few weeks as the holidays ramped up while the pay stayed the same. #DoorDash became my only source of income.

I also threw myself into political activism, working with the #PartyForSocialismAndLiberation to fight off an Austin Energy rate hike that punished the poor with big rate hikes while giving cuts to the wealthy. We won a few minor concessions, but the disparities were still there.

Afterwards, I sold or donated most of my possessions to try to pay my bills. I even sold my car eventually once DoorDash stopped paying well. I took the remaining cash and geared myself for a thru-hike of the AT, convinced that I could walk myself to a better place physically and mentally.

Physically, by mid April of 2023, I certainly felt ready. I was doing 15-mile days in #atx #austin. But mentally, I was still struggling with suicidal ideation every few days. My mom had booked flights and a hotel to see me off at #AmicalolaFalls, and the week before, she picked me up and brought me to her place.

It took all of 48 hours for her to chip away what little facade of confidence I had left. I broke down crying, saying I was at least passively suicidal, had crazy #anxiety and #depression, my blood sugar was all kinds of fucked up on account of not taking my #diabetes meds, and, above all, I was not (mentally, at least) ready to spend months in the mountains, alone.

So now I'm here, in Benbrook TX, back on meds, back at home (again (at 33)), going to #therapy, going bankrupt, and trying to figure out how to survive in #LateStageCapitalism and not end it all.

At this point I'm out of the nosedive at least. But I've got a bunch of climbing to do in the meantime.

@ariadne #IPCC is very conservative since the final summary has to be greenlighted by government officials. And it's usually the summaries that find entry into public discussion since only few journalists take the time to sieve through hundreds of detailed, scientific reports.

I find it somewhat amusing that you can empirically experience how weather conditions are getting worse by the year with a new record in floods, droughts, etc. being achieved almost every year while it's being talked about limiting the average, global temperature to 2°C until 2100 as if climate change is some matter of a few decades into the future.
People should really follow #Greta Thunberg's advice and panic a lot more since fear is usually a decent driving force for humans to change things radically.

The #IPCC used the word “colonialism” in its #report summary for the #FirstTime in the organisation’s history.
The paper claims that #colonialism has made #ClimateChange more severe. Particularly, #historical & #contemporary forms of colonialism have #contributed to a rise in the susceptibility of particular populations and geographical areas to the impacts of climate change.

I missed seeing an important paper published a year ago, written by three leading economists. It's deeply critical of methodology used by the IPCC and others to generate scenarios for the effect of "carbon offsets" and for efforts to achieve "net zero."

World-leading economists have blown a hole right through the middle of the main tool used to produce the net-zero scenarios embraced by climate policymakers.

In a new paper, Sir Nicholas Stern, Nobel Laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz, and Charlotte Taylor conclude that climate-energy-economy Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs), which are the key tool in producing emission-reduction scenarios, “have very limited value in answering the two critical questions” of the speed and nature of emissions reductions and “fail to provide much in the way of useful guidance, either for the intensity of action, or for the policies that deliver the desired outcomes”. The research paper is The economics of immense risk, urgent action and radical change: towards new approaches to the economics of climate change.

Now this is a big thing, because IAMs are at the centre of the IPCC Working Group III report on mitigation, and “have played a major role in IPCC reports on policy, which, in turn, have played a prominent role in public discussion. They continue to play a very powerful role in the research activities of economists working on climate change.”

And it is not just the IPCC. The net-zero plans which are the focus of international discussion — such as those of the International Energy Agency and the world’s bankers (Network for Greening the Financial System) — are fundamentally dependent on IAMs.

A stunning example is the set of net-zero 2050 (NZ2050) scenarios being promoted by the world’s central bankers. They have up to 50% of primary energy use coming from fossil fuels in 2050, “offset” by use of unreliable carbon accounting and land-based measures — including bio-energy — which impinge upon and may decrease land for cropping even as demand for food increases by half over the next 30 years This agenda is supported by the fossil fuel industry and by some “climate activist” investor groups.

The economists' research identifies a number of fundamental problems with IAMs, some of which are intrinsic to their structure and cannot be remedied. Perhaps the biggest is the deep uncertainty that surrounds climate change, let alone the uncertainty in trying to map those physical changes into social and economic impacts. Deep uncertainty exists “where the outcomes cannot be fully described” and hence cannot be quantified. Yet without quantification of future costs and benefits, IAMs simply cannot compute: they break down and can provide no answer.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) synthesis report recently landed with an authoritative thump, giving voice to hundreds of scientists endeavouring to understand the unfolding calamity of global heating.

What’s changed since the last one in 2014? Well, we’ve dumped an additional third of a trillion tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere, primarily from burning fossil fuels. While world leaders promised to cut global emissions, they have presided over a 5% rise.

For over two decades, the IPCC’s work on cutting emissions (what experts call “mitigation”) has been dominated by a particular group of modellers who use huge computer models to simulate what may happen to emissions under different assumptions, primarily related to price and technology. I’ve raised concerns before about how this select cadre, almost entirely based in wealthy, high-emitting nations, has undermined the necessary scale of emission reductions.

In 2023, I can no longer tiptoe around the sensibilities of those overseeing this bias. In my view, they have been as damaging to the agenda of cutting emissions as Exxon was in misleading the public about climate science. The IPCC’s mitigation report in 2022 did include a chapter on “demand, services and social aspects” as a repository for alternative voices, but these were reduced to an inaudible whisper in the latest report’s influential summary for policymakers.

The IPCC offers many “scenarios” of future low-carbon energy systems and how we might get there from here. But with few if any exceptions, they maintain current levels of inequality between developed and developing nations, with several scenarios actually increasing the levels of inequality.
