A black and white photo of James Connolly. He is a white man with a roundish face. He has receding dark hair, bushy brows and a big brush moustache. He's wearing a 3 piece suit and his white shirt has a small rounded collar. He's looking slightly to his right and seems to be containing a smile.

Won't you take me to Crunchy Town? 🎹 When Sligo (west Ireland) met Berkshire (west of London) and a collaboration brown ale involving The White Hag and Siren.

Crunchy Town, 4.2% ABV, is malty and biscuity with a gentle ginger warmth.

Is drinking a lightly spiced brown ale wise in 23°C heat? 🙈🫠

#Celtic #MythologyMonday: #Leborcham had unsuccessfully tried to warn #Deirdre to leave #Ireland after she and her lover had been tricked into returning from their Scottish exile. Thus she went to #Conchobar and told him that her hard life in the wilderness had destroyed Deirdre’s beauty, although she remained as radiant as ever. Alas for the girl, the king chanced to see her again and so realized Leborcham’s deceit.

“All #hiking routes in #OpenStreetMap in #Ireland” is looking a little sad and small... ☹

https://routes.tracestrack.com/ie/hiking/all/

#Celtic #MythologyMonday: #Conchobar lured #Deirdre and Noísiu back to #Ireland by vowing that he had lost interest in his bride. Noísiu, homesick, agreed to return. Despite premonitions of doom, Deirdre reluctantly agreed. Under an ominous blood-red cloud she sailed for Ireland with the three sons of Uisneach.
„Immediately upon landing, Noísiu and his brothers were set upon by Conchobar’s warriors, who killed them without offering them a chance to defend themselves. Hauled back to Conchobar’s court in chains, Deirdre bitterly reproached the king for his deceit and violence. Once he had Deirdre, Conchobar decided he no longer wanted her. So, to humiliate her further, the king gave her away to one of the men who had killed her lover. As the murderer bore her away in his chariot, Deirdre leapt from it and was killed, her head smashed against a stone.“

Christy Brown was born on 5th June 1932 in Crumlin, Dublin. He had 22 siblings of whom 9 died in infancy. He was an Irish writer and painter who had cerebral palsy and was able to write or type only with the toes of one foot. His most recognised work is an autobiography, My Left Foot (1954). It was later made into a 1989 film of the same name, starring Daniel Day-Lewis as Brown.

Guinness has recruited 44 farms across Ireland to participate in a regenerative agriculture pilot that's focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from barley production by 30%.

This seems like a good thing!

Then again, I don't know anything about Guinness' environmental track record so don't know if this is them being a good "corporate citizen" or a token effort to make themselves look good.

`In #Ireland the eel was a plentiful source of food during its annual spring migration. Said to grow out of horsehairs left too long in the water, eels were believed to have the ability to reincarnate themselves. They were sometimes said to travel across land to graveyards, where they slithered underground and ate the corpses. In Co. Clare, near Lisvannor, a monster eel called an Ollipheist or eascú crawled up from the water to sneak into graveyards and feast. It was pursued across the country by the outraged residents and finally killed near the cairn called Conn Connachtach in Kilshanny, some miles distant from the sea.
Eels appear in myth as well as folklore: The fearsome goddess ‘Mórrígan appeared as an eel to the hero #CúChulainn, perhaps in her role as a foreteller of doom. The monstrous Caoranach fought with saints and heroes from the depths of Lough Derg (“dark red lake,” called so after her blood shed copiously at her death).`

On the whole, the #COVID19 situation in #Ireland is better in 2023 than in past pandemic years--but better doesn't mean safe.

Number of COVID patients hospitalized on June 2nd each year:

2020: 194
2021: 93
2022: 197
THIS YEAR: 207

In past years, early summer was a trough between surges. I don't expect a major surge to develop soon, but I also am worried we'll have the risk of another significant fall/winter surge ahead. Time will tell if those concerns are founded. #WearAMask

The sun set on a clear sky on Thursday night in Youghal. I was there with Blarney Photography Club, and as you may have guessed from the photo, I was wearing wellies!

We had fun photographing the outgoing tide, and when the sun eventually slid towards the horizon, the reflected colour in the sea got that bit yellower and warmer. The groynes (or groins, depending on where you come from) make for a great subject.

Here's the latest variant picture for Ireland.

The FE.1 lineage (23%) is rising rapidly, looks to be taking over from XBB.1.5 "Kraken" (27%).

FE.1 is child of XBB.1.18.1, adding the Spike F456L mutation.

The sample volumes seem low, but fairly consistent up to May 22.

The Eye Sees All

This graffiti caught my eye when I walked past. It was on the corner of Barrack Street and Fort Street in Cork. The eye sees you and the man screams at you.

It’s long gone now, this photo was made in 2019!

Since the weather is so beautiful and we've a long weekend in Ireland, I've made the #kindle edition of Elysian #free for the next few days. Normally it costs around $7 - for the seven years it took to write 😅.

This novel also takes place over a very long weekend in Cork city in 2016.

The yellow glow of sunset
I walked out my front door last night and spotted a fiery sunset behind the houses across the road. The colour slowly changed over the next ten minutes as the sun sunk further and further beyond the horizon.

I took 151 photos of the sky that night, most of them taken with me waggling my camera back and forth to capture some sweet ICM.

Hahaha, I literally took 151 photos of the sunset from the road outside my home a few minutes ago. Absolutely fabulous colours!

'course, now you know what I'll be posting on https://inphotos.org/ tomorrow, but I had to share it!

The winds blows softly

On a lovely evening in August last year I was walking along a beach with my wife. The sun was getting low in the sky casting a faintly yellow glow over the world.

This long exposure shot captures the movement of clouds, and the wind blown grass. Even though there wasn’t much wind, it’s all relative when the photo is 13 seconds long.

Streaks of Sunset Light

You may have seen the stunning sunset photo from Crosshaven that I shared yesterday. Well, here’s another shot of it.

This one doesn’t look like a typical sunset, does it? Except for the warm orange glow. That’s because I used a technique called Intentional Camera Movement, or ICM. I zoomed in on the boats in the water and moved the camera from side to side while taking the shot.

Sunset in Crosshaven

The sun sets over Curraghbinny Wood as I watched from the Crosshaven side. There was the most amazing glow in the sky that lasted several minutes, a nice end to a glorious day.

EU transport ministers are expected to discuss the environmental impact of private jet travel next week, after four member states raised the issue in an effort to reduce the carbon footprint of transport mode.

Austria, France, Ireland and the Netherlands call to step up "common efforts," stressing that private jets have a "disproportional environmental impact" per passenger kilometre.

The bay at later sunrise. It's a hazy morning, clouds are over the hills and after managing the thick clouds over the hills, the sun broke through. A golden ball throws its beam over the water of the bay. In front my terrace and green fields on the right side.

Have had a longer sleep this morning but I think I caught the most gorgeous moments of the sunrise. I love this flowing clouds which look like waterfalls.

The bay with my terrace in front. It's a cloudy sky which has a thiner part through which a golden sunlight breaks through down to the water and brightens it up. The clouds below the sunlight flowing over the hills like a waterfall.
Zoomed in of the part with the golden light and the waterfall clouds
A later picture through my bedroom window. The waterfall clouds are still there and the top is brightend by the golden sunlight.
