When George Orwell wrote about how the masters of the universe in his dystopian 1984 continually shrunk the dictionary in an effort to remove dangerous words, he was onto something very profound.
The word for today is "Islamophobia."
What does that word mean? Just as, presumably, one can have a fear of heights, open spaces, tight spaces, dogs, or clowns, one can have a fear of Islam.
When lefties throw around the word, it is to imply that the fear of Islam is as irrational as the fear, say, of walking under a ladder. In other words, it being a phobia, one can address it with lots of therapy and rehab, as is the case with most other phobias.
Is it, however, irrational to have a "fear of Islam"?
Let's put "phobia" in context, and ask, whether it would have been irrational for a Cossack or a Ukrainian in 1930s USSR to have a fear, a phobia, if you must, of the Communist Party, and of Joe Stalin?
Would we judge a "Communistaphobe" under those conditions as an irrational, hate-filled person? Would we see a Jew, a Gypsy, or a Jehovah's Witness in 1930s Germany as the holder of an irrational phobia if he or she expressed a fear of Nazis?
Would therapy and censorship have helped the sufferers of those "irrational" phobias? Would it have helped for Winston Churchill not to express open disdain for both Communism and Nazism? Was Churchill helping make "phobia" of Nazism and Communism a respectable irrationality?
Was he making it impossible for us to understand the Nazis and the Communists and to have a peaceful accommodation with them and their ideology? Should we have reached out to the "moderate" Nazis? Rudolf Hess, misunderstood messenger of peace . . . right.
Let's look around the world, and ask "Who is not an Islamophobe?" The world is full to the rafters with Islamophobes. I wonder if the people slaughtered at Charlie Hebdo and in the kosher market had a bout of Islamophobia just before the AK rounds put an end to those thoughts?
What about the people in the Westgate Mall in Nairobi or in the villages of Nigeria? Guess what? Huge numbers of Islamophobes live lives of utter misery and horror in the Islamic world. I lived for years in Muslim countries, and met countless Muslims terrified of Islam, especially women and budding intellectuals.
Let us not forget that in the long and bloody history of the Religion of Peace, the greatest number, by far, of Islam's victims have come from the ranks of Muslims. Nobody massacres Muslims as frequently and as copiously as other Muslims following the dictates of Islam.
The question, however, and in truth, that we should be examining is not "Who fears Islam?" Everybody does. Yes, everybody, or at least any person who has the capacity for rational thought.
It, however, should not be whether we fear Islam, but what are going to do about the threat that it poses? Shall we do as the progressives want us to do, reach out, better said, submit to Islam, and give in to our fears?
Rest assured that nobody fears Islam more than the people who tell us we should learn to "coexist" with Islam, that we should have the Muslim call to prayer broadcast from the cathedral towers at Duke University, that we must avoid "offensive" words such as "bacon" and "pork" in our books, etc.
It is the progressives who are the biggest Islamophobes, because quite literally, they fear Islam and give in to the "phobia."
In the past, we came to fear the Nazis, the Fascists, the radical Shintoists, and, eventually, the Communists. We did not give in to our fears, we fought back, and, oh yes, we won.
You bet I fear Islam. It is the first step to rational thought about Islam.

Is this real or parody? Can we even tell at this point? Is Allah punishing us with an eternal string of Poe's Law dilemmas for leaving unwashed dishes in the sink for too long?
Back when I still lived in Massachusetts, I knew an older guy in the Twelve Step rooms.
Before his recovery, he had a brief career as a hood, at a time when organized crime hadn't yet been successfully infiltrated.
He used to talk about the assassins of his acquaintance. Some of them would commit literal bloody murder, then head to the nearest restaurant for a big dinner, which they apparently enjoyed with gusto.
I think of that story often whenever I hear of rampant #Amorality, like #Genocide.
The explanation in the #Quran is the only one that makes sense to me.

The Quran: A book of hate literature:
A Pentagon briefing paper in 2006, titled “Motivations of Muslim Suicide Bombers”, pointed to the Quran as the main source of the pathological hatred that fills the mind and heart of every Muslim suicide bomber.
But the White House has always defended the position that Muslim terrorists are a tiny minority of heretics, “…who follow a perverted interpretation of Islam.
One of the most critical pieces of information Western politicians have always tried to bury under the rug is the fact that the barbarism committed by Muslim radicals has involved diverse ethnic groups of Muslim fundamentalists, from India to Israel to Indonesia to Spain to England, etc.
Quran and Hadith are a cohesive source that motivates all of them to commit such atrocities.
Western politicians cling to the myth that “Islam is a religion of peace”.
In every continent of this planet, in madrasas mostly funded by Saudi Arabia, Muslim children are fed the poisonous venom of hatred by the compulsory reading of “ Jews as ‘apes’ and Christians as ‘pigs’“.
Here are a few verses from well over 150 verses spread over hundreds of pages in the Quran to incite in the name of Allah acts of violence directed against Jews and Christians.
Know that we send down to the unbelievers (Jews and Christians) Devils who incite them to evil. Therefore have patience: their days are numbered. (Quran 19:87)
This verse is often chanted during the beheading rituals we have on radical Islamic websites. For the pious Muslim beheading his defenceless hostage, it is an act of heroic proportion, because he is slaughtering the Devil incarnated in the human form of an Infidel.
Satan has gained possession of the People of The Book (Jews and Christians) and caused them to forget Allah’s warnings. They are the confederates of Satan; Satan’s confederates shall assuredly be lost in hell. The Believers are the confederates of Allah (Hizbollah), and Allah’s confederates shall surely triumph. (Quran 58:19)
Another verse is recited frequently in the background of beheading rituals, to reinforce the view that by slaughtering Christians and Jews, a pious Muslim is killing Satan, not an innocent captive.
We will put terror into the hearts of the unbelievers (Jews and Christians). They serve other Gods for whom no sanction has been revealed. Hell shall be their home; dismal indeed is the dwelling place of the evil-doers. (Quran 3:149)
A verse often used by Wahhabist radicals to encourage Muslims to kill indiscriminately innocent children, women, and seniors attending a wedding or using the public transit system.
After all, Jews and Christians worship gods that have not been sanctioned by the Allah of Islam, and they are all classified as evil-doers who shall perish in an earthly hell of Muslim design, make, and timing.
Do you fear the unbelievers (Jews and Christians)? Surely Allah is more worthy of your fear. If you are true believers make war on them; Allah will chastise them through you and humble them. He will grant you victory over them and heal the spirit of the faithful. (Quran 9:14)
Wahhabist preachers exploit this passage extensively to remind Muslim followers that Allah’s will for the believer is very clear; his or her primary religious duty should be to wage war on Jewish and Christian unbelievers, and thus impose on the kuffar Allah’s agenda for the salvation of humanity.
Cast into hell every hardened unbeliever, every opponent from the people of the book (Jews and Christians), and every doubting transgressor who has set up another God besides Allah. Hurl him into the fierce tormenting flames of hell. (Quran 50:21)
Jews do not worship Allah. They worship Adonai and Elohim… Christians are no better. Their Allah is known as Christ.
Suicide bombers use this verse to justify the blowing up of their explosive charges on buses and in a variety of public places frequented by Jews and Christians.
By becoming a shaheed (Arabic for martyr) and securing a place in Allah’s heavenly kingdom, the suicide bomber is hurling his victims (hardened unbelievers) into the fierce tormenting flames of hell.
Strongest among men in enmity to the believers wilt thou find the Jews… (Quran 5:82)
Believers, do not make friends with any men other than your own people. They will spare no pains to corrupt you. They desire nothing but your ruin. Their hatred is clear from what they say, but more violent is the hatred which their breasts conceal. (Quran 3:117)
For a Wahhabist, the noblest religious duty is to exterminate from this planet the Jews, who have not honoured their covenant with Allah, and have refused to accept his messenger Muhammad as “The last of the monotheistic prophets”.
If scholars and academics thought that Mein Kampf, written by the psychopath Adolf Hitler, was the first literature demonizing and dehumanising Jews, they should go for an in-depth study of the Quran before making such claims.
The key obstacle preventing law enforcement agencies from terminating the activities of radical Muslim preachers who casually disseminate the venom of hatred in their mosques is not the lack of incriminating statements made to indoctrinate young minds, and very critical for securing convictions in a court of law.
The critical problem centers on the reality that law enforcement agencies cannot use hate laws to jail, or deport radical Muslim preachers, without the consent of the politicians who often dismiss Islamic fanaticism and hatred as the act of misguided naive individuals who are experiencing difficulties adapting to the Western way of life.
A politician who for the sake of political correctness refuses to believe in the math put forward by scholars and Western intelligence agencies after studying the finances and numbers of Muslim students attending Muslim madrassas (religious schools) all over the globe: “About 15% of the 1.8 billion Muslims in the world are now fundamentalists. That’s about 270 million Muslim zealots scattered over the world…” ready to cast into the fierce fire of hell Jews and Christians who for centuries have rejected the revelations of the prophet Muhammad.
Only a politician willing to bury his head in the sand will consider 270 million radicals as “a few” misguided individuals.
Any person with a sound mind will acknowledge that 270 million Muslim zealots represent a serious threat, especially when they have openly displayed a strong commitment to ruining the Western world to perform a religious duty clearly stated in the Quran.
Leave to me those who deny this revelation. We will lead them step by step to their ruin, in ways beyond their knowledge. (Quran 68:41)
The early history of Islam could be dismissed as fabrications by later generations of Muslim authors entrusted with the task of protecting the vested interests of the ruling Caliphs.
With a worldwide population of 1.8 billion Muslims, the annual amount of zakat (tithing), issued forth from this global body easily reaches some billions of dollars.
Islam’s entrenched power structure has no intention of relinquishing its grip upon this financial windfall.
Islam’s power players would risk losing everything rather than engage in the travails of actually earning a living through physical exertion.
The most basic vested interests of many Islamic clerics and scholars militate directly against any substantial reformation.
Discontinuing the compulsory aspect of financing jihad through zakat would eliminate a prime mover in terms of motivating Muslim charity.

It is ok to criticize the #government of #Israeli: that is a matter of policy, and bad policy at that.
It is ok to criticize #Hamas: they are a #terrorist group, and one that murders civilians at that.
It is ok to criticize #Judaism, #Islam, #Christianity, and #Atheism, intellectually, as perspectives on #religion, as long as we understand that these are diverse groups where adherents have vastly different ideas of doctrine and practice.
It is never ok to criticize someone for the arbitrary group they were born into, nor for what other supposed members of a group they're a part of do, or any other case where it's not a direct result of being members of said group.
Members of groups are individuals, and are responsible only for what they do and say, not for what others do and say. It does no good to ask someone to answer for the actions of another, unless they're actively advocating for that person.

It appears as if some parties are entertaining the idea of forming an alliance with the hard right party. I am not sure what concessions will be made (PVV will probably have to drop their anti #Islam rhetoric & proposals), but I assume immigration will become more restrictive under the new government.

(Special to Informed Comment; Feature) - Ich trauere um die Menschen in #Israel und #Palästina, die beide von ihren eigenen Regierungen und #Führungen missbraucht und terrorisiert werden. Die #Hamas ist keine legitime Regierung und sie ist nicht der #Islam. Der #Zionismus ist nicht das #Judentum. Die Hamas und die israelische Regierung haben das Leben ihres eigenen Volkes als Schachfiguren in einem groben politischen Spiel benutzt. Mit der Zerstörung des Gazastreifens, die so schlimm war wie die Zerstörung Dresdens im Zweiten Weltkrieg, hat die israelische Regierung schnell jegliche diplomatische und weltweite Sympathie verspielt, die sie durch die #Ermordung von 1.200 unschuldigen Israelis durch die Hamas und die #Entführung von 240 weiteren Personen gewonnen hatte. Infolge der #Kriegsverbrechen eines eindeutig zionistischen Staates stehen #Juden in der ganzen Welt vor einem noch nie dagewesenen moralischen #Dilemma.
Die Videos von Hunderten unschuldiger, friedlicher Israelis, die bei einem #Musikfestival brutal ermordet und entführt wurden, waren entsetzlich. Zu wissen, dass die Hamas an diesem Tag an 21 weiteren Orten ähnliche Verbrechen gegen die #Menschlichkeit begangen hat, ist mehr als wütend und herzzerreißend. Da möchte jeder hart zurückschlagen. Aber politisches Kapital lässt sich durch ein gewisses Maß an Zurückhaltung gewinnen, und #Bibi kennt so etwas nicht. Es ist nicht weniger wahnsinnig und wütend zu sehen, wie Bibis Regierung mit zehnfacher Gewalt zurückschlägt und aus 20.000 Fuß Entfernung zehnmal so viele Frauen, Kinder und nicht kämpfende Männer ermordet, wie am 7. Oktober von bewaffneten Schlägern getötet wurden. Wenn ich sehe, wie Hunderttausende von mittellosen Menschen durch die Straßen des #Gazastreifens stapfen und nicht wissen, wohin sie gehen sollen, dann kommen mir die Tränen. Zu wissen, dass ihr Leid durch eine grobe und scheinheilige #Perversion der jüdischen #Ideale verursacht wird, macht es noch wütender.
Es macht mich auch wahnsinnig, wenn ich mir die grobe Hybris und Arroganz des israelischen #Geheimdienstes und der israelischen #Armee vor Augen führe, die auf #Wachposten an der Grenze verzichteten und stattdessen ein elektronisches System einsetzten, das von der Hamas so leicht zerstört werden konnte, als sie schliefen. Ich war schockiert, als ich erfuhr, dass es an diesen #Grenzübergängen keine Augen, Ohren und #Waffen gab, nachdem ich vor vielen Jahren durch den stark militarisierten Nahen Osten und Israel gereist war. Obwohl ich amerikanischer #Jude bin, musste ich mich nicht nur vor der Einreise nach Israel am berüchtigten #Rafah-Tor legitimieren, sondern auch vor dem Betreten einiger Orte, an denen ich ein herzlicheres Willkommen erwartet hatte. Während meiner zweitägigen Teilnahme an einer Konferenz in #Nazareth im Jahr 1980 (direkt nach Camp David) fühlte ich mich durch die spürbare #Überwachung der #Sicherheitskräfte beobachtet. Die #Sicherheitsbeamten scheinen die #Touristen vor vierzig Jahren effizienter überwacht zu haben als die #Netanjahu-Regierung die Haupttore des Gazastreifens im vergangenen Oktober. Offenbar hatte sie einige #Truppen entsandt, um den #Hausbesetzern im #Westjordanland zu helfen, weil sie sich zu sicher war, dass die Hamas in Gaza damit zufrieden war, Israels Polizist im Gazastreifen zu spielen.
Die #UNO und ein Großteil der #Weltöffentlichkeit waren nicht immer ein freundlicher Ort für Israel, aber nicht, weil der Großteil der Welt die Juden hasst. Schließlich haben wir uns weltweit viel Zuneigung und Unterstützung verdient, weil wir den #Holocaust überlebt haben. Die Kritiker dieses Todesregens aus dem Himmel hassen die Juden nicht. Sie hassen, was Israel seit 1948 unschuldigen palästinensischen #Zivilisten antut, und in jüngster Zeit den Moloch von #Bombardierungen in #Gaza. Gibt es eine profanere Definition von "#Overkill", als dafür zu sorgen, dass für jeden getöteten israelischen Juden zehn oder zwanzig Palästinenser sterben?
#Zionismus ist kein Judentum, und jede gegenteilige Behauptung der israelischen #Propagandisten führt nur dazu, dass Juden mit dem Pinsel der #Kriegsverbrechen der #Likud-geführten Regierung gezeichnet werden. Die meisten amerikanischen Juden der jüngeren Generation sind unzufrieden mit dem, was aus dem Zionismus geworden ist. Was auch immer die ursprünglichen Tugenden des Zionismus waren, als ein Weg für verfolgte Juden aus der Palästinensischen #Autonomiebehörde, ihren Selbstwert zu behaupten, so ist er jetzt zu einem Bestreben mutiert, ein anderes Volk zu demütigen und zu beherrschen. Der Zionismus wurde unter dem Likud-#Premierminister Menachem #Begin immer grausamer, unter Ariel #Scharon noch grausamer und unter Benjamin Netanjahu (Bibi) sogar destruktiv radikal. Ja, der Zionismus war immer ausgrenzend, um die jüdische Einwanderung (#Alija) zu fördern, aber die #Extremisten haben ihn in eine kranke, grausame #Ideologie verwandelt, die die arroganten, imperialen #Gräueltaten der israelischen Regierungen unter der Führung dieser drei vorangetrieben hat. Es ist, als ob Bibi und Donald #Trump beide die ultimativen Fantasien ihrer Parteien für eine grausame, dystopische, faschistische A#genda erfüllen. Die Entwicklung ist unter Bibi schnell eskaliert, so wie die Republikanische Partei sich unter Trump schnell entwickelt hat.
Sie hassen die #Raubzüge der rechtsextremen israelischen Siedler, die den biblischen Mythos als gültige historische Aufzeichnung betrachten, als ob er das Gewicht der modernen Diplomatie und gültiger Verträge hätte. Die moderne #Diplomatie im Nahen Osten begann nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg auf der Konferenz von Sam Remo 1920 in #Italien, und das #Besatzungsrecht ist in den #Genfer #Konventionen verankert, nicht in alten Texten. So sieht es der größte Teil der Welt. Die jüngsten israelischen Regierungen haben die illegalen Besetzer ermächtigt, noch mehr Gräueltaten gegen die palästinensische Bevölkerung, ihr #Eigentum, #Schulen, #Bauernhöfe und die Wasser- und L#ebensmittelversorgung zu begehen.
Ich halte mich für einen guten, UN-orthodoxen Juden und sehe keine Notwendigkeit, mich zu ändern. Ich akzeptiere meine lebenslange Unbeliebtheit bei den republikanischen Juden, die in vielen amerikanischen Städten die #Synagogen und S#ozialeinrichtungen dominieren. Sie waren die Klasse, die von den #Reaganomics verführt wurde, und sie sehen auch keine Notwendigkeit, sich zu ändern. (Vertrautheit erzeugt manchmal Verachtung.) Dennoch ist die große Mehrheit der jüdischen #Amerikaner sehr fortschrittlich und weist mit Nachdruck auf die Sünden des israelischen Militärs und der Republikanischen Partei hin. Wir wenden uns gegen die selbstzerstörerischen Tendenzen der jüdischen #Republikaner, die die progressive Agenda aufgegeben haben und unter den #Bush-Jungs immer weiter nach rechts gerückt sind, und gegen Donald Trump, der all die dystopischen Elemente des republikanischen Fantasiemodells verwirklicht hat, nachdem die Bushs und Reagan einfach nicht gemein genug waren.
Niemand kannibalisiert die eigenen Leute so wie die Republikaner und insbesondere die jüdischen Republikaner. Vor und während der Gründung Israels waren viele strenggläubige orthodoxe Juden vehement gegen die Gründung Israels, und einige tun dies immer noch. Sie betrachten die Schaffung einer politischen Einheit in der biblischen Heimat als eine Störung der Ankunft des Messias. Auch sie sind antizionistisch, aber aus einer anderen Motivation heraus. Wir sind kein Monolith.
Ungeachtet dessen, was ich jetzt sage, plädiere ich nicht dafür, die medizinischen und humanitären Bedürfnisse der in Israel lebenden Menschen in Zeiten des Krieges zu vernachlässigen. Die meisten von ihnen hassen ihre Regierung, so wie die meisten Amerikaner Trump hassen. Diese Gräueltaten geschehen auch nicht in ihrem Namen. Ich plädiere für eine umsichtige israelische Regierung, die sich für eine Lösung einsetzt, die die #Staatenlosigkeit der #Palästinenser beseitigt und damit Sicherheit für die Juden schafft. Es ist unwahrscheinlich, dass dieses Ergebnis von der gesetzlosen und autoritären Netanjahu-Regierung erreicht werden kann, die darauf aus ist, die Gerichte zu zerstören, um an der #Macht zu bleiben.
In den mehr als 40 Jahren meines Engagements für akademische #Studien über Israel und Palästina habe ich es vermieden, mich als "Antizionist" zu bezeichnen. Angesichts der #Diskriminierung, der #Pogrome und schließlich des Holocausts, den die Juden durch den europäischen weißen #Nationalismus der faschistischen Ära erleiden mussten, war es schwer, sich nicht für die Verwirklichung eines lang gehegten Traums der Juden zu begeistern, in das "Gelobte Land" zurückzukehren. Dies begann als formale politische Bewegung mit dem 1. #Zionistenkongress in #Basel im Jahr 1896. Er wurde zu einer alle vier Jahre stattfindenden Konferenz, und die jüdische #Einwanderung nach Palästina begann in immer größeren Wellen. Viele Juden wie ich bezeichneten sich als Zionisten, die jedoch die berüchtigten israelischen "#Militärexzesse" ablehnten. (Ein #Euphemismus für kaltblütigen, systematischen #Mord und #Piraterie.) Aber als Jude war ich noch nie so gegen das, was aus dem Zionismus geworden ist. Der massive Overkill und die Gräueltaten in Gaza unter Bibis Führung seit dem 7. Oktober und die unerbittlichen Angriffe auf palästinensische Menschen und Eigentum im besetzten Palästina des #Westjordanlandes durch rechte #Siedler haben mich fest in das antizionistische Lager getrieben.

Last night I went to my #Masjid's celebration of #Mawlid, the commemoration of the birthday of the Prophet Mohammad SAWS. It was a quietly beautiful experience.
Communal #Prayer in small spaces where people like to chatter is challenging for us #Autistic people. I didn't have my AirPods with me last night to reduce noise. And in the past, repetitive phrases, chants, and so forth have done nothing to calm me down.
So it was real #Baraka (blessing) last night when the chatter and crowding didn't bother me. And the #Wird (praise and prayer in #Verse form) settled my mind down just a bit. Alhamdulillah.
Our #Masjid , the Mezquita Mayor of #Granada, #Spain, was founded by students of the late Shaykh Mohammad ibn al-Habib (may Allah SWT be pleased with him). He was one of the principal shuyukh of the #Darqawi #Tariqa #Sufi school of Fes, #Morocco. We chanted his wird (linked below) as we frequently do.
Today in unusual #Autistic challenges: I'm going to a group meal at my #Mosque where the custom is to sit on the floor and serve yourself from a common plate, also on the floor.
This is not good for those of us with #Dyspraxia or #EatingDisorders. That being said, I do like to put in facetime at some of these events, and the #Moroccan meals are super tasty.
So how to deal ? Insha Allah I'm bringing a square plastic box with two-inch sides. I'll serve myself, ONCE, from the common plate while kneeling, and then I'll take my box over to a place where I at least can sit on a cushion.
I may not get the full social experience. But given that I can't handle multithreaded conversations among groups of people in any context, I'm not really missing out.
And I think there is what I call "intramural #Dawah" in just showing up and giving #Salaams to the homies. There is certainly #Baraka in it.
In France, you can't attend public school if you insist on wearing a yarmulke, a hijab, or any other marker of religion. Some people defend this by saying "Christians can't wear crosses either, so it's fair." This false equivalence is, of course, nonsense.
No major branch of Christianity requires laypeople to wear crosses, so the policy inconveniences zero Christians while impeding educational access for followers of other religions.
Here's the thing: if French public schools ever start having classes on Sundays and on Easter Monday and on Christmas and on All Saints Day and on Ascension Day and on Whit Monday and other Christian holy days, then we can talk about how even-handedly secular French schools are. Until then, if they're going to accommodate Christianity in countless ways, they can damn well tolerate other religions' needs, especially ones involving nothing more onerous than a relatively small piece of cloth.
