Still, I have grown to appreciate the wisdom of my American #Jewish predecessors who elevated this minor holiday. We kind of need our own winter holiday to keep from getting overwhelmed by Christmas. Every time somebody is crassly antisemitic to me in public, my wife is aghast and everybody else acts like I'm made of glass, when I usually am trying not to burst out laughing at what ludicrous, silly, and pathetically ineffectual people they are.
On the other hand, when people are slickly antisemitic, speaking with the power of the violent populism they have at their back, causing my blood to run cold and worry about my immediate and long-term safety, the response is waffling about maintaining relationships (not usually from my wife).
