If you can setup an #email account you can also setup a #mastodon account.
They are not equally easy, though. For email there is no https://joinmastodon.org, a wizard that makes the initial approach easier.

Much better to do a #JoinTheFediverse campaign than a #joinmastodon campaign in my view. I'm with @calckey on this.
More complex to communicate, no question, but it has a much better value proposition as a pitch, and there are plenty of potential Fediverse users left who would prefer a value-based pitch and take the time to learn, than zero-attention-span mainstream users.

Interactions are up though as our active 40 - 60 users continue to follow more people and interact with the broader #fediverse

In another case of instance owners who can GFTO, @mb@mastodon.au has announced that mastodon.au is closing in SEVEN DAYS. Breaking the #Mastodon Covenant is ok because he's "refunding folks their money". What bs! All because Gargron didn't get back to him about changes to #joinmastodon. Plenty of folks run forks and other platforms that don't qualify for a #joinmastodon listing and make it happen. Most here long enough know to build around website guy. Guy also runs syd.social so you can avoid. If he can't keep the 3-month shutdown promise at mastodon.au I wouldn't trust him to keep it elsewhere. #fediverse
@ruari The number of new signups has dramatically decreased in the past month.
oslo.town was listed on the #joinmastodon home page, but I believe the home page was changed so instances that required approval were hidden.
And then that decision was reversed and now instances that require approval are listed below others with open registration.
And some point during this redesign process, oslo.town was removed. 🤷
So now we get very few sign ups.
