I filled up my old notebook (RIP, old friend) and it was time to make a new one. Making my own notebooks is a weird ritual I’ve become more and more attached to. I like being able to make the choices — the paper, the page count, the cover fabric, the colors, etc. — and bookbinding has become a hobby.

I was looking through an old #journal from 2012-2013 and I see an entry where I mistakenly dated it as 2021. It threw me for a loop for a second until I realised that it was a mistake. 😅​

There's a lot of sweet memories from a time gone by. I'm just harvesting some bits to toss into my 100 year journal and my #obsidian vault, the rest will be tossed into the trash. I really need to make some space.

I ended up ordering both the #Hobonichi #Techo and the #Cousin journals so I could get a sense of their size and weight. Even out here in the jungles of #Mississippi, #Amazon had next-day delivery for these (which is very, very rare).

I love the portability of the #Techo, but worry the pages might prove too cramped. I'm going with it, though, for the rest of 2023. If I feel constrained, I'll switch to the Cousin for 2024.

Meanwhile: I'm loving this little #journal.

Call for nominations for intern junior editorial positions at JEP:HPP
Deadline November 20th, 2023. Open to PhD Students and post-doctoral fellows.

The editorial leadership team for the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance seeks nominations for intern junior editorial positions for early-career psychologists (IJEs). These positions are meant for those with an interest in developing skills for future roles in the scientific publishing process.

IJE’s will serve 12-month terms beginning January 1, 2024 and the position includes an honoraria stipend of $1,500 USD.

In service of APA’s recent resolutions to address systemic racism in psychology, this program seeks to provide opportunities for people from historically excluded groups, particularly Black, Indigenous, and other psychologists of color, as well as members from other communities which have been historically excluded from leadership opportunities in research and publishing.

IJE positions are open to all qualified candidates, including those from historically excluded groups, who have completed at least 3 years in a PhD program and are no more than 5 years postdoctoral. Individuals in non-academic positions with suitable qualifications are also eligible. Qualified candidates should have published original research in an area broadly relevant to the Journal.

IJEs will work with the journal’s editor, Isabel Gauthier, to work on the Journal’s pre-external review process. Each IJE will work on 3-4 manuscripts a month. The pre-external review process includes screening manuscripts for appropriateness, verifying adherence to instructions for authors and providing authors with feedback that can increase transparency and strengthen the manuscript before external review. This work will be done in concert with the editor, who will co-sign pre-external review letters.

This position does not require experience with peer-review, although it is welcomed, and IJEs will be working on manuscripts on a broad range of topics as represented in the Journal.

How to apply (Deadline November 20th, 2023)
Interested and qualified candidates should send a letter of interest introducing themselves, their expertise, and an explanation of their interest in and appropriateness for the position, along with a copy of their CV, to Isabel Gauthier (Isabel.gauthier@vanderbilt.edu) and put “IJE nomination” in the subject line. Nominees are asked to send the contact information for their current mentor and let them know that they may be contacted for a reference.

Appointments will be made in December and positions will begin January 1, 2024.

Very sad to see this outcome of a once highly respected journal. But hope we all learned a lesson from this and stop submitting to such journals.

A brief word of advice for #Science folks hoping to publish their #Research in a #Journal;
Assistant/Associate editors read your cover letter. Cover letters give us a little more insight into why you do the work that you do and what you're really trying to communicate through your manuscript. Put something into it, like passion maybe!
Secondly, when your manuscript is rejected and you pick a new journal and resubmit, edit the target journal line to reflect the correct journal name okay? Please?

A #CradleCatholic. A #LapsedCatholic? As a wee lad, I did all the stuff - Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation. I was born here all my life. When I was around four years old, the church kicked out my mom and, by extension, my family. An #ExcludedCatholic? I explored other practices and faiths, #meditation, #yoga, #Buddhism, and all the things. I wanted to not convert to a religion or practice that I had not been born to or wasn't otherwise ancestrally connected. I explored Protestant fellowships but soon began seeking "the deeper things" back in the lives of saints. This led to a deep dive into the #EarlyChurch Fathers and early #ChurchHistory. Entering the #OrthodoxChurch, I lived in several monasteries and wandered around the US like the guy in Way of a Pilgrim. I was ultimately drawn to #Theosis and the #PrayerOfTheHeart, sometimes called the #JesusPrayer. That church became tedious as well. Long story short, decades later, a pandemic, and a few ends of the world here I am. I recently stumbled across a podcast called the #PopeFrancisGeneration. I'm intrigued. I am listening. Let's see where my current studies lead.

So I went ahead and set up a #wordpress install on my site, for no good reason. I don't even know what to blog about. I've never really understood personal blogs, for that very reason.

I mean, I have my personal #journal, but there's no way in hell I'm letting you yahoo's read that. It's on paper. It's in a book.

I'm curious what I may have to offer the greater world that would justify me adding anything to this blog.

I mentioned in my intro that I'm a #bookbinder so I thought I really ought to share some of my projects.

The purple one I just finished today. It and the blue one were commissions. The green/tan one is one of my standard designs which will be going onto my Etsy store when I re-launch later this year.

My first looks at Day One for journaling. In the past, I haven't considered Day One since it was only available as a mobile app. (I do almost all my writing on desktop/laptop. I like a bigger display space for writing.)
