Foxgloves (Digitalis purpurea). Conflicting ideas about why they got named this. So I'm going with the suggestion that foxes wore them to silence their movements when hunting, as the most plausible explanation.

"Flaming June," Frederic Leighton, 1895.

I love the Pre-Raphaelites. This is Leighton's most famous painting, based loosely on a Michelangelo sculpture of "Night." Leighton struggled to get the pose just right, and make her limbs look naturally situated, and it finally came together after many sketches.

#SevenOnSunday in honour of our #RainySeason really kicking in! Pics taken in mid-week when we had some serious rain (Tues night through Thurs morning) and this weekend has seen it continue. After warm/dryish weather, exciting to see some of the longest #rain spells we've had in years (it hasn't been terribly dry here, but our rainy season is usually composed of frequent rather than long rains + thunderstorms that dump a lot of water fast, rather than all day/multi day events.) #june #Alberta

We are standing beside a large lake, very lightly rippled by a soft breeze. There is considerable cloudiness, with a break along the far horizon. The sun has set a while ago, but is still tinting the horizon a deep red orange and the clouds above it a purple shade muted with gray. All this is mirrored on the lake surface. The far shore of the lake is densely wooded. The shore just in front of us is a tangle of leafy green underbrush and tall grasses. A tree frames the image on the right.

The Delphinium nuttallianum are native to Colorado, which means they co-evolved with local pollinators and birds.
