Just back from another great day of PD with @ValentinaESL.
Today, AM was about reading and writing with k-5 and PM was about working with #SLIFE students.
Great content, and got do work with great teaching colleagues in #Ohio.

Great #ProfessionalDevelopment with @ValentinaESL today. Looking forward to more tomorrow.
PD was about the book "7 Steps to a Language Rich Interactive Classroom". My table mates and I were all impressed with how straightforward and easily implementable the steps are. Lots of info we've heard here and there before (such as SWIRL), but much more accessible and immediately useful.

Summer schedule while our ed team volunteers are on school break.
June15-July15
#ClimateChange research, education & scicomm, #EarthScience, #astronomy, #AI & #robotics, for all ages/levels from our education outreach community contributing partners as resources become available.

Summer #ArtShare session.
Our ed team from universities across North America will be back August 4th to assist #K12 #teachers with resources, #edtech and lessons for fall curriculum planning.
Do you or someone you know work in a "therapeutic program" in public schools? -Or perhaps you have a child in one, or attend such a program yourself. If so, I'd love to connect.
I'm increasingly convinced the vast majority of our problems in #urbanplanning could be solved by paying #teachers more
Submitted a proposal to present at an EdTech conference today - on the spur of the moment. No idea if it will get accepted.
"Technology to Support English Learners & Multilingual Families"
I put it down as an 80-minute session, but really it could be a 3-hour workshop, easily.
Half my job is convincing teachers and staff they need to communicate properly with multilingual families. The other half is helping them do that.
Of course, need to support Ss in the classroom, too.
Laura Balogh and I wrote the only book describing an inclusion program for students with significant social, emotional, and behavioral challenges. Whenever I say that I still think "how could that possibly be true?" But it is. We'd really like to help the inclusion conversation happen out in the field and in the literature, and to get our book into library systems and university libraries. There's a copy in my my local library system (Minuteman), if you happen to be local.

Tell me about your teacher preparation and admin preparation programs! Where did you attend? What did you make of it? Or maybe you are working in a teacher or admin preparation program now? My co-author Laura is teaching at Regis University in Massachusetts.

In March, finally got "They Called Us Enemy" for classroom library. Lent it to a history teacher b/c students wanted to read - studying re:internment. Had to borrow it back shortly after they finished to lend to a teacher at another high school to use.
Not sure where it is now. I think I lent it back to the first teacher? Point is, I should have gotten 2+ copies.
BTW, we have <1% Asian / AAPI students in the schools. They weren't the ones needing it.
From chapter 7, Working with Behavior:

To be clear: Minneapolis is a special case. Ed Graff, the incompetent former superintendent, and terrible previous school board leadership created self-inflicted wounds that are unique to this city.
However, their bungling came in the context of a state-created crisis. Minnesota has been systemically underfunding school districts along racist, anti-immigrant, and anti-metropolitan lines:
https://www.mprnews.org/story/2023/02/15/how-minnesotas-school-funding-leaves-the-most-inneed-districts-behind
Hoping against hope that the substantial boost in education funding in this bill is enough.
High-need public schools in MN are in crisis right now. I certainly see that here in Minneapolis, but it’s statewide — and state funding is at the heart of it.
I haven’t yet seen a in-depth analysis of what the cross-subsidy mitigation in this bill means in practice for Mpls & similarly squeezed school districts.

Always good to hear the latest from Stu Keroff and what he and his students are up to with #Linux in #K12 #schools.
There was a piece of good reporting about school safety on @NPR Morning Edition today.
What I don't hear in the piece, and don't see enough in person, is the common sense approach that maintaining physical safety is priority one.
This does NOT mean suspending and expelling students. It may mean possession searches for a student who was found to have brought in a weapon, until the adults who are in charge of keeping the school safe feel that there is no longer a reasonable concern.
It also means that students who for example, are caught bringing a weapon in, are going to be having lots of conversations and getting a lot of attention.
Students and teachers who have been hurt or threatened also must be closely attended to.

How #BigData could contribute to improving #education at every level in every area of study.
Last day of classes with #k12 students this school year. Awards and picnic day tomorrow. These last few class days are always draining because some students try to complete a semester of assignments in a couple of days. And they need my help.
That said, I'm already planning how to rearrange my room for next year. Finally have a TV, so want to better arrange the desks to see it, which means moving the foosball table and some shelves to the other end of the (very small) room.

Reparative relationships are a theme in our book describing #inclusion for students with significant social, emotional, and behavioral challenges.

#AdultESOL (#AdultESL) class went well today. Only two classes left in this term. Taking a term off this summer for the first time since ... I don't remember when.
We get #k12 #ESOL assessment scores tomorrow. Can't wait to see how my students did. Also the day that some of the #EMEB students get an early start of final exams, so I may not actually have time to check the state testing results.
Can't believe only 1 week left with students this school year. Flew by.
High school graduation went well today. weather cooperated. Great to see the grads off.
Four of our (~60) graduating students earned AA (college 2-year) degrees *last weekend* and got their high school diplomas today.

In an op-ed in The Hill that I hope gets serious consideration, Javed Ali argues that the U.S. K-12 sector deserves to be designated a standalone critical infrastructure sector by DHS/Congress to unlock access to the resources necessary to increase both the cyber and physical security resilience of school systems across the nation. https://thehill.com/opinion/education/3923683-designating-schools-as-critical-infrastructure-could-help-keep-students-safe/
I have long argued that K-12 schools operate in a unique context, even when compared to other state and local government agencies, and are not especially well served by existing programs and policies. [A fact the US GAO has well-documented.]
Such a designation would recognize the vital role that the public education system serves to the nation, a system that has undergone its own digital transformation in recent years. The challenges the K-12 sector faces are myriad, from physical to cyber, and at present the sector represents too soft a target for those seeking to foster violence and discord.
Setting aside the politics of mobilizing Congressional action to move a proposal like this forward, I’m curious for reactions on the merits/pros/cons of the idea. (I’m also well aware of the prioritization challenge of sectors arguing for critical/essential/most critical status, etc.) #CISA #DHS #criticalinfrastructure #k12 #edtech #k12cybersecure #edusec
