Great #ProfessionalDevelopment with @ValentinaESL today. Looking forward to more tomorrow.

PD was about the book "7 Steps to a Language Rich Interactive Classroom". My table mates and I were all impressed with how straightforward and easily implementable the steps are. Lots of info we've heard here and there before (such as SWIRL), but much more accessible and immediately useful.

Submitted a proposal to present at an EdTech conference today - on the spur of the moment. No idea if it will get accepted.

"Technology to Support English Learners & Multilingual Families"

I put it down as an 80-minute session, but really it could be a 3-hour workshop, easily.

Half my job is convincing teachers and staff they need to communicate properly with multilingual families. The other half is helping them do that.

Of course, need to support Ss in the classroom, too.

Laura Balogh and I wrote the only book describing an inclusion program for students with significant social, emotional, and behavioral challenges. Whenever I say that I still think "how could that possibly be true?" But it is. We'd really like to help the inclusion conversation happen out in the field and in the literature, and to get our book into library systems and university libraries. There's a copy in my my local library system (Minuteman), if you happen to be local.

In March, finally got "They Called Us Enemy" for classroom library. Lent it to a history teacher b/c students wanted to read - studying re:internment. Had to borrow it back shortly after they finished to lend to a teacher at another high school to use.

Not sure where it is now. I think I lent it back to the first teacher? Point is, I should have gotten 2+ copies.

BTW, we have <1% Asian / AAPI students in the schools. They weren't the ones needing it.

From chapter 7, Working with Behavior:

#education #inclusion #k12 #mentalhealth

-An excerpt from the author's book The Therapeutic Inclusion Program:

Books or programs that tout proprietary approaches make cases for their broad and successful application. The therapeutic inclusion program is different. The program has a relationship-based philosophy and does not otherwise rely on a specific approach to behavioral intervention. In this sense, the therapeutic inclusion program is a reliable container and creative space where a variety of interventions can be implemented. Michael A. To be clear: Minneapolis is a special case. Ed Graff, the incompetent former superintendent, and terrible previous school board leadership created self-inflicted wounds that are unique to this city.

However, their bungling came in the context of a state-created crisis. Minnesota has been systemically underfunding school districts along racist, anti-immigrant, and anti-metropolitan lines:

Hoping against hope that the substantial boost in education funding in this bill is enough.

High-need public schools in MN are in crisis right now. I certainly see that here in Minneapolis, but it’s statewide — and state funding is at the heart of it.

I haven’t yet seen a in-depth analysis of what the cross-subsidy mitigation in this bill means in practice for Mpls & similarly squeezed school districts.

There was a piece of good reporting about school safety on @NPR Morning Edition today.

What I don't hear in the piece, and don't see enough in person, is the common sense approach that maintaining physical safety is priority one.

This does NOT mean suspending and expelling students. It may mean possession searches for a student who was found to have brought in a weapon, until the adults who are in charge of keeping the school safe feel that there is no longer a reasonable concern.

It also means that students who for example, are caught bringing a weapon in, are going to be having lots of conversations and getting a lot of attention.

Students and teachers who have been hurt or threatened also must be closely attended to.

Reparative relationships are a theme in our book describing #inclusion for students with significant social, emotional, and behavioral challenges.

#education #k12 #mentalhealth

An excerpt from the book The Therapeutic Inclusion Program:

For our purposes in the school environment, a reparative relationship is one that works to heal former relationships which have developed in ways that have been problematic for the student. By creating a dependable and trusting relationship starting within the therapeutic milieu, students can feel safe and cared for. This relationship can be a model and springboard for healthy relationships with school staff, peers, and even the institution of school itself, moving forward.

A Teacher's Case for Critical Race Theory: "Educators should be especially resistant to any attempt to disarm this discourse at the intersection of pedagogy and power." - @CovingtonEDU

https://www.humanrestorationproject.org/writing/a-teachers-case-for-critical-race-theory #edchat #K12 #education

Critical Race Theory provides accessible, common language and a unifying understanding of the relationship of race and power. It empowers collective action against the outcomes of systemic racism and the desire to fracture our understanding and isolate our response. Conscientious readers will recognize the focused attacks on CRT and culturally relevant pedagogy as an unusually self-aware admission that programming rooted critical frameworks is an inoculation against authoritarian attitudes and the maintenance of education as a hierarchical system of predictably distributed achievement without agency. Educators should be especially resistant to any attempt to disarm this discourse at the intersection of pedagogy and power. As Ladson-Billings & Tate ask: “What constitutes student success? How can academic success and cultural success complement each other in settings where student alienation and hostility characterize the school experience?

Fighting Back Against the Future: "...the failure to reimagine education – and our fundamental relationship to the future – becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy."

https://www.humanrestorationproject.org/writing/fighting-back-against-the-future #education #K12 #edchat #highered #leadLAP

Excerpt that reads: If we embrace dystopia, if we embrace doomerism, we lose hope as a platform for action in the present. In assuming that incremental change is hopeless against entropy, we either embrace the darkness or put our faith in panaceas, magic potions, grifters, charlatans, and superhero teams who will emerge from the shadows and fix everything. We become locked in a stasis and fail to do anything at all. In other words, the failure to reimagine education – and our fundamental relationship to the future – becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. The future depends on educators, in coalition with other movements to create an equitable society, to demand and make change here in the present.

In an op-ed in The Hill that I hope gets serious consideration, Javed Ali argues that the U.S. K-12 sector deserves to be designated a standalone critical infrastructure sector by DHS/Congress to unlock access to the resources necessary to increase both the cyber and physical security resilience of school systems across the nation. https://thehill.com/opinion/education/3923683-designating-schools-as-critical-infrastructure-could-help-keep-students-safe/

I have long argued that K-12 schools operate in a unique context, even when compared to other state and local government agencies, and are not especially well served by existing programs and policies. [A fact the US GAO has well-documented.]

Such a designation would recognize the vital role that the public education system serves to the nation, a system that has undergone its own digital transformation in recent years. The challenges the K-12 sector faces are myriad, from physical to cyber, and at present the sector represents too soft a target for those seeking to foster violence and discord.

Setting aside the politics of mobilizing Congressional action to move a proposal like this forward, I’m curious for reactions on the merits/pros/cons of the idea. (I’m also well aware of the prioritization challenge of sectors arguing for critical/essential/most critical status, etc.) #CISA #DHS #criticalinfrastructure #k12 #edtech #k12cybersecure #edusec

Creative idea from @tonyvincent who used #ChatGPT to "code" math games for students that he then published via a Google Site without needing to write the JavaScript or HTML. Also, a nice example of thoughtful prompt creation: https://learninginhand.com/blog/2023/2/5/code-math-games-with-chatgpt-google-sites HT to @wfryer and @ericcurts at #NCTIES23 for raising this up. I'm definitely adding this one to the #AI in #Education Padlet I've been curating at https://d-e.padlet.org/campbb/chatgpt-and-other-ai-in-education-resources-wkg1vy9zvyaajoyx

Our latest #EduFuturism Learning Series workshop is up on YouTube! A huge thanks to those who participated. What is elegant design & why do the mechanics of classroom learning matter?

I downloaded SVG from #Canva. Opened it in #Inkscape. No text boxes. Lots of text in the design; no text boxes.

Looked at the source in #emacs. Lots of stuff I didn't understand, but couldn't find any of the text shown.

Put some text in, in Inkscape. Looked at source. Text there, easy to find.

Original text was nothing special, no reason (I am aware of) for it to be paths or ???.

Had to insert all new text. Had to delete each original char individually.

Why do that, Canva?

I’m hearing a lot of teachers talking about leaving after this year. Sadly, these are the ones you’d most like teaching your kids—smart, passionate, lifelong learners. When the innovators have all been driven out of this field, guess who will be left? The dull, the indifferent, and the obedient—a bad school administration’s dream employees. That’s who. #teaching #highschool #k12

#PLEASE PLEASE, #schools and #faculty, stop "teaching" #Adobe #Photoshop, #GoogleDocs, #Microsoft #Windows, #Zoom, and other commercial software applications.

You're not providing #students an #education, your providing companies customers.

We never taught Smith-Corona, or Turbo TS40, or Ford Tempo. We taught, respectively, typing, wood shop, and student driving. We should teach word processing, computer technology, and communications.

Dear All,

📢Call for Interview (virtual) Participants!

📌As a PhD student in Learning Design & Technology, I’m looking for middle/high school #TEACHERS (Grades 6-12) in the USA🇺🇸 for my study on in-service teachers’ lived experiences related to their digital competencies in the pandemic era.

Please see the attached Flyer👇 for the details. I’d greatly appreciate if you could share it! Thank you! 🙂
