Võhandu Marathon looks cool.
It's a 100-km paddling event in South-East Estonia, in April 2024. I'm slightly tempted even tough 100 km in 24 hours is a bit too much for me. The river scenery looks beautiful!
Awww, one more #kayaking video! I actually saw several deer and got within about 50 feet. If I was hiking, I could never have gotten that close. I don't think they consider things in the water to be threats. They'd look over at me, then go back to doing deer stuff.
Went #kayaking this weekend. Decided to do a "maze run": Put your right hand on the wall and run. You won't get lost, but you won't take the fastest route either! Perfect for going adventuring through unknown waterways. Here's a short video of just how unbelievably beautiful today was out on the water.

Here’s another #kayaking excursion from 2020. This one was on Lake Whatcom in #Bellingham, WA - a nice college town near the Canadian border. It reminds me a lot of Boulder, CO with large cycling and kayaking groups. Very progressive community too.

This video was shot off of Fay Bainbridge Park on Bainbridge Island, WA looking south to Mount Rainier and north #Seattle, Ballard-Shoreline area. We paddled across, fending off boat traffic. Normally, we prefer more peaceful paddles. 🙃

The plan is progressing. Just bought a folding bike (that will eventually be carried by the kayak and in turn tow the kayak). First time on a bike in... 20 years? Riding a bicycle gets your heart rate up way more than hiking over the same paths! I'll need to get in shape :(
Things will get interesting when I try to tow the 60 pound kayak up the local hills. The bike is a "commuter bike" and I think the low gear might not be low enough. I guess I'll find out!
I'm a mountain person and my visits to the beach/sea, about 30 minutes away are very few and far between (years). Having said that my wife and daughters persuaded me to try kayaking today at Maro near Nerja on the Costa Tropical. Although out of my comfort zone, I enjoyed it and glad it was a bit rough as it made it more interesting. Here's a short video. Did I like it enough to buy a kayak though? 🤔 Sorry about the crappy music 😂

Stopped for lunch at a lean-to for the first time in decades. Already thinking we might come back to #RaquetteLake again next year.

When we moved to southeast #Pennsylvania from #UpstateNewYork, we were dismayed by the lack of lakes. Why the glaciers hated PA, we don't know, but they sure didn't leave many lakes behind, reservoirs for paddling are few, and flatwater stretches of river are scarce. But, we finally went up to "Lake" Nockamixon yesterday, and found a lovely stretch of #paddling.

Things I DIDN'T expect to be doing while #kayaking in Burrard Inlet over the weekend: searching the internet for "Burrard Inlet speed limit"
So many powerboats buzzing us at speed - we were constantly riding one wake or another, one of which came close enough they broke over our bow and soaked us.
Turns out there are 5 knot limits in some parts eg Deep Cove/Belcarra but
a) frequently not observed
b) majority of the Inlet is whatever-speed-you-want.
Not our most fun day out on the kayak.
After a month of editing I finally decided to publish what I have since fun factor decreased.

Does anyone in #Seattle know why #traffic has been terrible everywhere most of the day—middle of the day, post-rush-hour evening, etc—since Monday? We know it’s going to be bad this weekend (#TaylorSwift at Lumen Field, Bite of Seattle at SC, Canadian tourists in town to see the Blue Jays, several bridge/lane closures) but why is it already bad now?
Anyway, at this rate, if you need to cross the ship canal or Lake Washington this weekend I suggest #kayaking

I finally got on the road, and as I'm getting closer to the lake, I noticed I'm nearly out of gas! I didn't want the group having to wait for me, so I made it to the launch point, and we all headed out into the water. A sudden Southern Squall swept in drenching us all with rain! We had about 2 in of water in our kayaks in just a few minutes! But, there was no thunder or lightning, and it was warm, so we just kept going 😂.

Well, I had an interesting morning! I was running a little late for my weekly kayaking group, so I put an egg in the pan to cook for an egg sandwich for the road. Then, I went outside to
load my kayak in the car, forgetting about the egg! I returned to a smoke-filled kitchen. I had to stop and turn on fans and open windows and try to clear it out.
Gliding through the water
Gentle swish of the paddle
Breeze ripples marsh grasses
Soft early sunlight
Birds call
Fish arc with a flash of silver
Turtle heads pop up to peer cautiously
Then clamber onto a sunny log
Tiny crabs scuttle and wave their claws on the pluff mud shore
Herons examine the water and
Pelicans wheel and dive
In search of their meal
Morning on the estuary
None of us had done an extended trip in pack rafts before. We all packed very light, but were surprised with how well they handled on the river and how much space we had inside (should have brought more whiskey...).
Such a good way to get out into land that we love.
But there were so many good things beyond the challenging kayaking on the trip.
We saw three bears (all at a happy distance), a mountain goat momma with her kid, eagles, and more trout than we could count.
It was warm enough and the pools in the river were deep enough that we jumped off of quite a few ledges and cliffs.
And our side hike up to a high mountain lake was glorious.
Oh! and we got into the first of the year's huckleberries!

Well.... I got interrupted yesterday... but I still wanted to share a bit more about the trip.
The river is running unusually low for this time of year. The closest gauge (70 river miles downstream!) said it was running at 1700 cfs as we started the trip, but I'd guess that where we put in, we were floating on 200 cfs. All the tributaries quickly added to that, but it was a lot of tight, technical paddling. #Whitewater #kayaking

Returned a couple days ago from a really wonderful river trip with a couple friends (one of whom even married me...). Profoundly relaxing 5 days on a very wild and remote section of the Middle Fork of the Flathead River.
