#kbin
shopping for #lemmy / #kbin / #threadiverse instances—anyone have any recommendations?
It seems like firefish developer is good at 2 and very good at 3. That helps attract people to the software because it looks so fancy. But that also sets them up for failure, as its popularity becomes its own undoing.
As the infra and/or the database cannot cope, The hapless developer is left running around like a headless chicken. I feel like similar issues are affecting #kbin at the moment, but with a good sprinkling of #spam problems.
Do y’all #Fediverse citizens know of a #Kbin or #Lemmy general purpose instance that has zero tolerance for bigotry and doesn’t hold back on defederation? I’m looking for a #safespace, but I’m cishet so I don’t wanna assume I’m welcome everywhere.
I was happy with lemmy.ca but the influx of shit takes from lemmy.world, sh.it.just.works etc after the SOGI protests is something I’m eager to not seeing anymore.
I occasionally peek at #kbin once in a while to check if it sees anything beyond my first post :blobfox3c:

What are peeps using for their Reddit-like instance?
I am on Kbin.social, but I rarely see any new content from that instance. Should I switch to something like lemmy.ml or sh.itjust.works ?
@gronjo45 I personally think Kbin has a great interface and just feels a little bit more user friendly... I'm happy there. There's meant to be an update coming soon with the API which will finally mean 3rd party apps can work! Very rarely visit Reddit now tbh. #kbin
No meme here! But it may be buffering because you're chatting with my Mastodon profile 🙂
#mastodon: uses JsonLD parsing and behaves like a good fediverse citizen.
#lemmy: has a reasonably well-formed JsonLD schema, but ignores JsonLD semantics when parsing and does manual heuristics.
#kbin: what's a schema? just names the fields same as lemmy and ignores JsonLD as a concept.
#fediverse my ass.
OMG. It looks like #Kbin supports secure mode/authorized fetch now?
I'm not getting the waiting for approval notification when following a kbin user on two separate servers or a magazine.
Awe-some!!
Now to see if stuff shows up in my timeline.

Hey #Mastodon and #fediverse friends: what are your TOP THREE fave fediverse platforms?
I know and use Mastodon and #PixelFed and a weeee bit of #kbin but I'd love to hear which platforms you rank highest.
AND WHY?
Don't just STAR this post: reply!
@Rob299 Do you know of Android apps for #Misskey/#Firefish? I couldn't find any on F-Droid though I haven't looked beyond it yet.
But I do feel that #Lemmy might be a bit too different from #Mastodon to fit in one app, unless it's basically just two apps in one package.
That said, I've heard that #kbin has both a forum-style thing (like Lemmy/#Reddit) and a microblogging-style thing (like Mastodon/#Twitter). So, theoretically, a kbin app might be best positioned to become an "everything" app.
You can check if #Kbin instance uses #Cloudflare or not via https://checkforcloudflare.selesti.com :idle:
Już we wtorek odpaliłem "early access" artykułu, a teraz już normalna premiera :)
Pamiętacie fora dyskusyjne? Pewnie niektórzy już nie, za to #Reddit czy #Wykop znacie doskonale. Wiecie, że są podobne systemy, które można samemu wdrożyć i łączyć się z innymi?

Dawniej w sieci wszechobecne były fora dyskusyjne - miejsca, gdzie użytkownicy o podobnych zainteresowaniach mogli dyskutować i porządkować rozmowy w tematach oraz działach. Nadal takie twory istnieją, ale zostały wyparte np. przez agregatory treści takie jak #Reddit czy #Wykop, które pewnie znacie. Ale wiecie, że istnieją też systemy, które można samemu założyć i łączyć się z innymi?

Hello, @jerry.
It seems there is some trouble with #Fedia? Yesterday, I wasn't able to use most pages of your #Kbin website with 500 errors all around the place after registration. Today, it's just the contact form and microblogs. Moreover, deleting account fails with the same error. (❗) I'm just scared of what will falter next... :php:
By default Kbin doesn't turn on captchas for new user account registrations.
Kbin and Lemmy servers have had problems with bots creating accounts.
Having captchas off by default seems risky to me. And a potential headache for a new Kbin sysop who is still getting familiar with Kbin.
To create a better experience for Kbin sysops, #SpaceHost is going to turn on captchas by default for Kbin servers.
(You can turn it off if you really don't want it.)
Regarding:
"do you know if there's a phone app for it yet? I messed around with it back in the Spring but I primarily used reddit on my phone so I haven't really gone back"
I haven't tried it myself yet, but I've seen people talk about:
Artemis
https://kbin.social/m/ArtemisApp
There is also something called:
Tundra for Kbin
https://kbin.social/m/Tundra/t/396839/Tundra-for-Kbin
I don't know anything about it though.
There might be other Kbin apps, too.
In the Kbin admin panel — there is a "settings" page.
There are 3 sections in the kbin admin panel's "settings" section:
• General
• Meta
• Instance
At the top of the "General" section, it seems to give you the option of changing the Internet domain name for the kbin instance server.
...
What happens if you change that?
Will it break federation?
Will it stop responding to HTTP(S) request from the previous Internet domain name?
Is it just cosmetic?

In the Kbin admin panel — there is a "pages" page.
There are 5 sub-menu items on this page:
• About
• FAQ
• Contact
• Terms of service
• Privacy policy
None of them seem selected, so it is not clear which of those 5 pages (if any) you about to create or edit — unless you look closely at the path in the URL, and notice it is "/admin/pages/about" (rather than "/admin/pages").
I think it would be better to visually indicate which is selected.

In the Kbin admin panel — there is a "federation" page.
The only thing I see on the Kbin admin panel's "federation" page is what looks like an input field to add ban instance servers.
It wasn't clear to me how I should enter the information — comma separated, each on its line, etc.
BUT — once I started typing, it became obvious.

BTW — it isn't clear to me how I should be casing the name of this software.
• kbin — with everything lowercase?
• KBin — with the "K" and "B" uppercase?
• Kbin — with just the "K" uppercase?
...
Originally I wrote it as "kbin". But now I'm seeing "Kbin" used. But I often write "KBin" because that is how I pronounce it.
In the Kbin admin panel — there is a "settings" section.
There are 3 sections in the kbin admin panel's "settings" section:
• General
• Meta
• Instance
Both "Meta" and "Instance" have a field called "Title".
It is not clear to me what each of these is for, or what the difference is between them.
Although I realized — if you want the page <title> changed, you need to set Meta's "title". But then — what does Instance's "title" do?

@boris_pohler Warum Mastodon?
Muss eh nicht. Kann ruhig auch #Firefish, #Pixelfed, #Peertube, #Hubzilla, #Misskey, #Foundkey, #Pleroma, #GoToSocial, #Bonfire, #Goldfish, #Friendica, #WriteFreely, #Lemmy, #Kbin, #Plume, #Akkoma, #Epicyon, #GNUSocial, #Hometown, #Smalltown, #Socialhome, #Streams, #Swanye, #Tahake, #Castopod, #Funkwhale, #Owncast, #Gancio, #Mobilizon, #NextCloudSocial, #Inventaire, #BookWyrm oder sonst was im #Fediverse sein.
https://wildasoftware.pl/post/miejsca-wymiany-linkow-przykladzie-kbin?ref=mastodon
Kbin seems to support something called:
Mercure
https://mercure.rocks/
https://mercure.rocks/spec
I don't think I have ever heard of Mercure before, but —
There is a setting to turn it on or off in the Admin Panel (at "/admin/settings").
It was already on — so on by default it seems.

I don't see a way to turn-off or restricting registrations in the Kbin admin panel.
I wonder if that is a feature that is planned — it seems to be a pretty common feature with Fediverse software nowadays. Lemmy has it, for example.
You can get to the Kbin "Admin panel" from the menu that is shown when you hover your mouse over (or touch) your username in the top-right of the screen.
The Admin panel starts off by showing you a dashboard. But there are several other pages that make up the Admin panel:
• dashboard
• settings
• users
• pages
• federation

Logging into Kbin for the first time takes me here (shown in the screen shot).
The "/all" page.

I have a new Kbin server.
I am going to document my experience as a new Kbin user and sysop.
Note that I already have experience as a Lemmy user & sysop. Some of that experience may be applicable here, too — but we will see.
🧵

Y’know, I really wanted to like #kbin, #beehaw and #lemmy, but they really are as toxic as Reddit - the gaming groups at least.
It would be nice to find a gaming group that’s not infected with assholes, but I feel like that’s asking too much, because Gamers are the worst.
Altho it’s not just the gaming groups. There’s a level of nastiness I wasn’t expecting going in after being on Mastodon. Mastodon has the HOA and Well Actually mansplainers, but some folks are just dicks on the #threadiverse.
Right now, the most popular Fediverse software is —
• #Mastodon
• #Misskey
• #Lemmy
• #PeerTube
• #Pixelfed
• #Pleroma
• #MicroDotBlog
• #WriteFreely
• #Kbin
With these up-and-coming:
• #Akkoma
• #Bookwyrm
• #Castopod
• #Firefish
• #Friendica
• #Hubzilla
• #Owncast
• #Takahe
• and others
Are the teams from all these Fediverse software involved with this new W3C social web community group?
Cool! Got a #Kbin instance up and running for the #FOSSDLECommons... That's me done for the week. https://fedidevs.org/projects/kbin/ and https://kbin.pub/en

I’ve seen this happen to several high profile fediverse developers over the past year. One day you’re tinkering along on your ActivityPub pet project and the next you’re replacing Reddit / Twitter / Instagram. So much pressure builds up around the idea, and it’s exciting, wondrous…and stressful.
@ernest of #kbin fame deserves not only a break, but some support.
https://kbin.social/m/kbinMeta/t/451896/Is-Kbin-dying-I-wanted-to-address-the-deleted-thread
So glad to live in the timeline where corporate heads constantly make such big whoopsies that #FreeSoftware automatically becomes viable as a result:
- #Twitter got converted to #X, so #Mastodon and the #ActivityPub alternatives got a truckload of users
- #Reddit locking their API and worsening their mobile offerings, so #Lemmy and #KBin got an unexpected surge
- And now #Unity charging not just per shipped game but PER INDIVIDUAL INSTALLATION, may this be the moment for @godotengine@mastodon.gamedev.place to finally shine?

So, #FireFish homies, I have a question. Are you able to access #Kbin, #Lemmy, and other non-Mastodon #fediverse links by pasting them in the search? It rarely works for me, and using one account for everything is something I miss from the smaller Mastodon server I was on before.
I'm wondering if it's just something about my instance or if FireFish just struggles with this kind of federation to begin with. Thank you in advance for any help, I really love the positive energy around here.
Hmm, to 0 nie wygląda ładnie 🤔

The Threadiverse already has Lemmy & Kbin.
But I think many people aren't aware of Prismo.
https://gitlab.com/prismosuite/prismo
Prismo is a link-sharing sharing and aggregation platform similar to Reddit, Lobste.rs, and Hacker News.
I.e., similar to both Lemmy & Kbin.
Its development started back in June 2018. But it isn't ready for production yet. It also looks like its development stalled back in May 2019.

Someone - perhaps the owners of Fark.com itself - really should rebuild that entire service into #Kbin or #Lemmy and port their entire user base over to the #threadiverse
https://www.fark.com/
"Twitter and Reddit may have only lost a few million users to Mastodon and Lemmy so far, but these are nation-sized numbers, comparable to what Scandinavia is to the United States of America. The incumbents have allowed the fediverse to reach critical mass. It's only gonna get bigger"
⸺ Erlend Sogge Heggen ( @erlend )

#fediverse #kbin #lemmy #mastodon #reddit #threadiverse #twitter
https://blog.erlend.sh/transitioning-r-rust-to-the-threadiverse
Three months ago I submitted a post to the #Rust sub-reddit called 'Building a better /r/rust together' wherein I hailed #Lemmy as a fitting successor.
Today we have 3+ moderately active Rust spaces on the threadiverse. To counteract community fragmentation, we need the ability for #ActivityPub groups (Lemmy 'community' or #Kbin 'magazine') to follow other groups.
Help needed from fedi-curious Rust developer out there: Implement FEP-d36d for Lemmy as drafted by @helge
@selea i still read it occasionally. its pretty striking how shit the quality of interaction is, though. having been on #mastodon for a while now it really puts into focus how broadcast-based twitter is.
it's also interesting how shit the post quality of #reddit seems now outside the niche subreddits. the only thing i care to look at there now is the LLM subreddit. #lemmy / #kbin is much more pleasant to browse.
@frank @marcoderksen #Kbin en #Lemmy (reddit alternatief), #BeReal mist nog in je lijstje qua echt grote netwerken.
Yet another reason why I chose #Raddle over #Lemmy for hosting my #Touhou forum: reliability. You can often see lemmy.world (which has the largest Touhou community AFAIK at 132 subscribers and 96 submissions, vs https://raddle.me/f/touhou at 124 subscribers and 970 submissions) and lemmy.blahaj.zone (2nd largest 2hu with similar subscriber count but way less submissions) out of service. Might be due to too many users using at once, some server crash, idk.
Whatever the reason is, the Lemmy software being so heavy has to be a factor. I mean come on, it requires JavaScript ffs.
Raddle meanwhile is so lightweight (written primarily in an appropriate language like PHP like a sane web-facing service would, and DOESN'T require JS), and server reboots (and I only witnessed one in my entire 5 years on that site) take only seconds. Postmill is a champ!
#OpenSource #RedditAlternatives #RedditMigration #Kbin #Reddit
So much more to explore, new projects, new apps:
#PixelFed like Instagram but no ads
#PeerTube like Youtube but not ads
#Friendica like Facebook but not harvesting your data
#Kbin like #Reddit
#Lemmy like Reddit
@MonaApp a new app which costs some money but it’s worth it every penny
They all communicate together, you can use any or all, keep your people, your following circles across all of them.
I have a theory; #ActivityPub works across various systems, but in the #Lemmy and #KBin realm, it seems to have some fits and starts. In particular, if I reply to the parent, I see it on the original instance shortly after. If someone replies to me and they aren't on that original instance (because they likewise federate with it ala kbin.social), then my reply to them doesn't show up until they reply again and then everything comes through on the original instance. What makes me think this is when the group boosts replies to microblogging platforms, it's boosting some of the replies but not all, depending on some criteria I'm not privy to (yet).
See the entire chain of: https://tabletop.social/@gpage/110905954518147043 as an example.
My theory is It's like there is something in the microblogging code that only pings the instance in question and the lemmy/kbin code pings the top level reply instance in addition to that. Once it sees that my reply is part of the chain, it pulls it in.
Has anyone else noticed this? Is it a quirk in the #Mastodon code (or more aptly for my current environment, the #Glitch code)? A known issue?
@ebel most #fediverse users have switched to #kbin or #lemmy, they #federate using the #activitypub protocol
Just wanted to share some exciting news from @reiver@mastodon.social!
We had initially planned to support #Kbin as the next software for #SpaceHost. And let me tell you, it's definitely something we're eager to roll out.
However, we've noticed a surge of enthusiasm surrounding #Firefish lately, with loads of folks asking about it. So, listening to popular demand, we've decided to make Firefish available next to those who are patiently waiting on SpaceHost's waiting list.
Stay tuned for more updates and get ready to dive into the amazing world of Firefish soon!

RE: https://mastodon.social/users/reiver/statuses/110892423163512213
After running a #kbin instance for nearly 24 hours.. I'm already leaving my thoughts. Keep in mind this is a very new project and under heavy dev.
❎ extremely difficult to setup, not only bare metal but docker. S3 integration especially.
❎ small-ish community of devs so it will take time to find help. This will get better over time hopefully
✅ the UI and social features are great. It feels more like a community than Lemmy communities lol.
❎ federation seems worse than #lemmy.
This is extremely disappointing. It's been two months and the #kbin developer still refuses to abide by the #zlib license for Postmill (the software that was used as a framework to create kbin!)
https://raddle.me/f/fediverse/170274/a-reminder-that-kbin-is-still-violating-the-zlib-license-of
So I haven't even installed #Kbin yet, but just browsing kbin social I already love the people tab and how I can see my Mastodon account.
Being able to easily see user content across the fediverse within kbin is already a plus.
So after running a #lemmy instance for a few days, my takeaways are:
✅ extremely easy to setup. Less than 10 mins and I was running.
✅ fairly active community behind it.
❎ Pict-rs is trash and lemmy needs to roll its own "media server".
❎ federation is wonky.
Now it's time to setup #kbin and give it a fair try.
#TIL that #Kbin has a mascot bird named Kibby.
