For the record, #Thunderbird @thunderbird: With the new release, the UI looks like shit under #KDE. Completely unmatching font sizes in menus, folder lists and message views; view "density" is either "compact" crammed or "default" wide-gapped; and no apparent way to fix that shitty look.

Nicht so bei #Spectacle, dem Tool für Screenshots. Das kann zwar jetzt tolle Dinge, aber ohne Tastatur kann man beim Bearbeiten nicht den Bildinhalt verschieben.
Früher ging das mit der mittleren Maustaste.

if there is one thing #KDE Plasma has helped me recognize, it is most definitely the fact that i care about consistency in my app / OS design far more than i ever realized.
i never considered it around the time i just ran windows, but admittedly, the only reason i ran windows as long as i did was because i was so badly informed on what linux actually was... like a lot of people, i think.
i deadass thought it was just a terminal for... years. never looked, never questioned it. just an old-school text-box. dunno why, but that was my vision for many years LMAO

Faced an issue recently: notifications from notify-send were coming as a pop-up but not showing up in the #KDE notification center history.
Had to go to Settings -> Notification -> Configure Application-Specific Settings -> Other Applications and check “Show in history” to make it work.
No one was able to tell me this yet regardless of where I asked so I'd be happy if you could boost this post so I may find someone who is able to give me an answer...
So if I make my custom theme in #KDE #Plasma how exactly can I set this here to show up in the quick settings. So that I don't switch back and destroy my customization if I accidentally click on Breeze Dark. So i.e. I want to replace Breeze Dark in the quick settings with a custom theme by myself with my own adjustments.

A few weeks with Ubuntu as desktop and I am reminded of why I always end up switching to Kubuntu (KDE).
For some reason GNOME strives to completely dumb down and simplify the desktop and all its apps. Who is this hypothetical user in 2023 they are designing for who is so new to desktop computing that a few settings/buttons in an app will scare them? 🙄

How to check the health of your battery on #Linux running #KDE:
Just click the battery symbol, it's right under the charge level.
How to do the same on Windows 10/11:
Click Start. Find Powershell. Right click it, run as administrator.
Type
powercfg /batteryreport /output "C:\battery-report.html"
Go to explorer, find that file, open it, tell Edge it's ok to open it and you don't need to sync anything.

#Nokia #N900 update: It works, but it's slow. Any UI like #Xfce or #MATE is just too much for the little 600 MHz CPU.
So I'm going to make myself comfortable with a terminal environment. Or rather: I will MAKE myself a terminal environment, because unfortunately there is no good preconfigured terminal "desktop" that just works. I'm going to have to edit a lot of config files...
I wish there was some kind of vintage desktop I could use like... I don't know, #KDE 1? Surely that worked with 256 MB of RAM back then. 🤔

Okay, this is cool! #KDE 's Kate creates a custom desktop file inside of ~/.local/share/applications to work around the lack of a custom jumplist for applications. (All we have right now, are the "Recent Files" thing or hardcoded actions)

It updates the desktop file with your session list and that's such a neat solution. I might steal this idea for Tokodon, because I want customized desktop actions for it too!

I've also been trying #GNOME and I'm very pleased with the UX changes since GNOME 40.
They finally rolled back some of the most controversial ideas from GNOME 3, such as the vertical arrangement of virtual desktops.
The also reintroruced basic configurability for fonts, keyboard shortcuts and more. No need to install extensions and tweaks.
If #KDE #Plasma 6 screwed up, I feel I could switch back to GNOME 45 with no regrets.

All it took was a truly great community manager who reads user comments on bugs and social media, and motivates #KDE developers to work on the ones that impact a large number of users.
It's not an easy job: users often come with unreasonable expectations, and frustrated users become offensive.

Here Nate keeps reminding everyone that a fix already exists, but not all distros have picked it up yet.
After #KDE #Plasma 5 came out, Nate Graham started focusing the community on the "Usability and Productivity" goal.
Finally, a stable #LinuxDesktop that's also configurable to my liking. I'm using it both on my personal laptop and at work, with 3 screens 🤩
@taoeffect While working at Google, I used #Cinnamon for a few years. It was unambitious but stable and usable. A bit of an evolutionary dead-end though.
At SpaceX, I've been using #XFCE on an ancient Ubuntu LTS. It was also more stable and usable than contemporary versions of #GNOME and #KDE.
Funny how large enterprise #Linux deployments spend time switching to a desktop environment which resembles classic Windows.
Clearly, #RedHat and #Canonical weren't listening to their customers.
#KDE or #GNOME, idc about the debate. i love keeping up with both and messing with both from time-to-time. i'm not someone in for making a dedicated decision and sticking to it, that goes for many things.
i like to leave myself open, thinking and constantly ready to experiment. luckily, #linux seems to be a great hobby for that. :)

there are still plenty of sites that emit it and more will come if people start moving away from the walled gardens.
many steps are required to get there. for power users what is missing is a really good desktop rss "browser". quiterss is abandonware and while #akregator is a decent #kde app its missing the fundamental filtering functionality

5. #Tasksorg for managing tasks and projects
No Adobe or data hoarding apps needed.
Been using #Ubuntu on and off since the distro was released (usually the LTS builds) for workstations and servers.
Recently been using #Fedora 38 #KDE on a spare laptop and loving it so far. KDE Plasma feels modern and a lot less clunky than Gnome.
Going to look into seeing how well KDE/Wayland/Nvidia all play together and probably move my workstation to Fedora.
@jaredwhite I've been on the other side of the DE divide (#KDE) and been loving it. it looks a little less modern than #Gnome but it's a lot more customizable which I enjoy. Haven't touched my #Windows11 install more than a few times since I built this machine and set up dual boot. I use it for work and personal, and couldn't be happier with #Linux on the #desktop

It's this time again: #Linux and #OpenSource news time!
This week, we have #KDE Plasma 6's release date (I'll spoil the video: it's in 5 months), we have the new #Ubuntu App Center, which seems to still not allow users to install anything other than snaps (let's hope this changes), and we have #GNOME 45 breaking all extensions (yes, for real this time).

@cassidy oh, yeah. Some change will always be required but I don't think this is something so hard to happen, since it's a single button.
The real problem is to solve this in the Linux env first.
1. If the #KDE and #Gnome add support for native app links.
2. Then in the following day we can have a #Firefox and #Chrome extension to forward the request.
The browser having support sounds like the easier part here. The hard work would be to rewrite how the DEs handle links.
