Mt. Zion Church, Richmond, Kentucky.
This church, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was dedicated in 1852. Ten years later, on August 30, 1862, it went from "sanctuary to surgery" when it became an emergency hospital during the Battle of Richmond, the largest win for the Confederates over the Union during the American Civil War.
The weather was in the high 90s as hundreds of soldiers, injured and/or dying, flooded the church and its grounds. Those that died were carted a few miles north to downtown Richmond where they were buried in a mass grave. Those that survived, recovered onsite or were taken to the homes of local residents for care.
"One Indiana soldier remember seeing amputated arms and legs thrown from the south side rear window of this building to the yard outside."
While hard to see now, there are cannonball scars on the outside of the building (not pictured). Cannonballs and other wartime paraphernalia is still found in and around the church today.
