Women In Agile Toronto
is sponsoring an interesting online lunch-and-learn next week, on supporting mental health!
We're all agreed, there's lots of "bad agile" ... but I've seen it done WELL, too! It can help people thrive.
What might that look like?
Join to hear "how learning and applying Agile techniques such as Design Thinking and Scrum can help us shape our mindset to a more flexible and kind way of thinking."
It's easy for me to drop everything and care for someone I love, but it's hard to do that for myself. Lately, I've been trying harder to treat myself like someone I love. Sure, I can remember every one of my shortcomings, but I can forgive myself and love myself anyway. And doing nice things for myself is a good way to start showing that love.

@dancinyogi we may disagree on what's "motivational." I wouldn't put "just think happy thoughts" in that group.
I'm more of a "dandelion growing in a crack in concrete" kind of motivational person
I'm a big fan of #kindness for ourselves and others.
Getting out of bed due to sheer grit is a great testament to motivation.

Alexa encourages good manners more than Siri does.
When #Alexa reads me my notifications and I say, “Thank you”, she says, “You’re welcome.”
#Siri says …nothing.
To my mind, that’s kinda sad. She’s not real, but she sounds real enough. And I don’t want to get out of the habit of being polite to people who help me to do things.
Also, #Apple, can Siri please learn to whisper like Alexa can? That’s a feature I'd really appreciate!
"You are not loved for your utility, you are loved for your personhood."
Just came across that quote in my web browsing (an article on burn out) and it just struck me as deeply true, and something others could benefit from reading.
Hello, and happy Friday! Day 15 of #30Inks30Days is now up, with links to previous days if you missed them. I picked another Inkvent ink this time.
(Wow, we're already halfway through...time is zipping forward)
Avoid killing if probable; utmost priority, making sure for people to be alive and in the best health, for the people.
Planting seeds to feed the people in the future.
Remembering history of achievements from yourself, others as well as those who alive, and/or somewhere else, or have deceased (With hope the actual people can be revived.)

Hey, much appreciation for the introduction to Wizardary all those years ago. I think the concept was an exciting one.
If I do have magical abilities I want to avoid hurtiing another best probable.
One day someone might write up some adventures of others' including me aswell perhaps. It would be incredible!
Last year a wonderful artist on Twitter painted a watercolour in memory of our lost boy, Pi…we honestly could not get over what a sweet gesture it was at a time we were so sad.
It was such a beautiful random act of kindness ❤️ and it turned out beautiful! Cat people are simply amazing!
"Soon after that experience, Belmont decided to seek out support. With the help of her therapist, family and friends, her mental health has since greatly improved. But that moment still resonates as the catalyst for her life moving in a whole new direction.
"Something that I realized is that even if something's not a huge moment in your life, just the little, small gestures that you can make for other people really do make a difference," Belmont said.
Small kindnesses, she believes, can be more powerful than we realize.
"Even if you see someone that has a cute outfit on, telling them might make their day. They might be super depressed and worried about the way they look. But if you come in and you give them a small little compliment, it could change everything for them.""
Thinking about last year when my grandpa passed away, and grandma was alone in a house for the first time in her 83 years.
Her neighbor, who is blind, found out she was worried. From then on until she was gone, he left the lights on in his house so she could see someone was home nearby.
Kindness is about making someone elses day with a kind word or deed. We can all do this effortlessly. It costs us nothing, yet can mean everything to the other person.
By choosing kindness, compassion thrives, making the world a much better place.
Have an awesome day and be kind.
A quotation from La Bruyere, Jean de:
There is a delight in meeting the eyes of one to whom one has just done a kindness.
[Il y a du plaisir à rencontrer les yeux de celui à qui l’on vient de donner.]
Full quote, sourcing, notes:
Today I went out with the kid, and lost my phone on the train. I had to rely heavily on the kindness of strangers to get it back, and strangers were, indeed, kind.
Sometimes people are ok.
Just told this cute little old lady how adorable her haircut is (not lying, she's super cute!) and she blinked at me and said, "Mine?!"
When I confirmed she lit up, thanked me and said "I needed that!"
I said "Thumper's mom said 'If you can't say something nice don't say anything at all!'"
She said her mom said that too.
I continued, "I say if you have something nice to say, you should go ahead and say it!"
She and her daughter smiled and nodded vigorously.
A quotation from Heschel, Abraham:
When I was young, I admired clever people. Now that I am old, I admire kind people.

It's so easy to get dragged down by your mistakes, especially when there are people that look at you and only ever see them. But mistakes are how we learn. Our mistakes, our past, they don't define us. We can be better than that. That's what today's poem is about.

Two pole vaulters flew over the bar on their final attempt at 4.90 & fell short on their three attempts at 4.95. They decided to share the gold medal!
“I kind of looked at her and said, ‘Hey, girl, you maybe wanna share this?' And the relief on her face - and you could see it on my face - and it was mutual... You know, we’ve been friends for so long so it’s super special.”
Just a reminder to anyone out there who's having a tough time today. What you're feeling right now isn't permanent. This too, will pass.
You don't owe feeling good or happy to anyone, it's OK to feel your feelings, although they can really hurt sometimes.
You're just as special and amazing as any other part of the natural world. Because you *are* a part of the natural world.
Like a tree, or the ocean, or a cloud, or the rain, or a mole crawling underground, or a tiny bird singing its heart out, you don't have to *do* or *achieve* anything to be awesome.

I’m really loving Mychal’s stories. He’s a librarian working at the Solano County library in Dixon, CA. His stories tell tales of kindness, curiosity, and delight. With all the madness around us, this is a breath of fresh air.
More of his stories:
(I made up the hashtag “libraridon,” which I believe is needed. Please join me in using this liberally.)
Wise words from Sir Paul McCartney in the #Ahimsa newsletter:
“But why? Well, because I don’t see any reason to kill an animal if I don’t have to – if an animal is trying to kill me, well, maybe. But my real question is: why does anybody do that if they don’t have to? It blows my mind every day of my life." ❤️

And at work, we communicate heavily about what we expect from people because they are in a #role. What about what people expect for themselves, because of their role?"
Several pointers to papers that I'll read.
Jump forward many months to yesterday. My new insurance card has arrived with my new (legal!) name on it. I had to pick up a prescription anyway, so I brought the new card with me, hoping that she would be the one working the counter - I really wanted her to be the one to make the change.
Luck was with me and she was working last night, so with considerable glee I showed her my new insurance card. She was delighted and promptly updated my name, properly this time, in the computer. I was laughing that the prescription I just picked up was the last one with my old name.
And then this happened: she asked me to hang on a minute, took the prescription to the back room for a minute, then brought it back to me. I looked down and discovered that she had reprinted the label and paperwork so the name would be Daphne, all so I could see it on a prescription right away. (2/2)
My local pharmacy has a policy that they will only use the name on the insurance as the name on the prescriptions. Months ago, I was picking up my meds, and the woman behind the counter looked at what I was picking up, looked at the meds under my name in the computer, gave me a little smile, lowered her voice a bit, and told me "You know, if you want, I can put a different name in the system for you. I can't change the legal name because of policy, but I can add a chosen name in parenthesis."
Ever since then, she and I have always had a smile for each other, and when she's the person on when I pick up meds, we chat.
I've told the story of that kindness before, but last night something rather special happened. (1/2)
Btw, I've gotten really harsh criticism for just saying "Be kind"... that won't stop me from saying it. We can always be kind and I can say "be kind" out of kindness. Encouraging to kindness is not rudeness and I can't wrap my head around it why would it be anything else than focusing on the positive side of things.
"Being kind to other people, doing nice things for others — those are the activities that tend to improve our well-being."
My favorite quote for today:
“Consider it: every person you have ever met, every person will suffer the loss of his friends and family. All are going to lose everything they love in this world. Why would one want to be anything but kind to them in the meantime?”

Folks that have an attacking tone don't do any good deeds for their cause. Been seeing this lately on Mastodon too and it makes me sad.
It doesn't make sense that you are an advocate for good things, but patronize people who are trying their best.
