The vehicular disturbance of noise, light and vibrations from vehicles causes stress and alters their behaviour. Road noise and/or vibration is believed to disrupt communication in birds. Motor noise is audible over 200m penetrating the environment. Species adjacent to roads flee the area.
The fragmentation of their home or loss of habitat can put yet another species on the extinction list. Survivors have a bigger chance to get under someone's wheels as #roadkill.

The once closed canopy above some roads gave the koalas some connectivity. The new widening does not provide any canopy bridges. A good way to undo the NSW #koala strategy.

In #Bellingen town the many logging trucks and heavy machinery shooting through the blissful latte strip of #HydeSt. go unnoticed. The surrounding #forests with their inhabitants are perceived as mere material for economic #Exploitation. #Deforestation, #BiodiversityLoss, #Extinctions and #Climate disruption are not yet on/at the level of the military dictatorships of the Amazon or Myanmar, but one has to keep up with the neighbours.

The Sisyphus 'highway to hell' is paving the way to go past the 1.5C threshold. 'Upgraded' roads speed up the destruction and extraction. A hotter, dryer climate will invite more mega #fires. It's the fast-track towards extinction.

It is usually hard to interpret scratches left on the bark of eucalypts. Different species can leave behind similar markings as they scramble up a tree (eg. possum, goanna, gliders). So I took the opportunity to observe these scratches closely because some were fresh and there was a sleeping doombearpee (koala) about 10m above me. I think the tree is E. tereticornis growing next to Bummeria (Brown Lake), Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island).

Vast national park to protect native animals 🇦🇺

#Habitat for more than 50 threatened species will be preserved as part of a new land acquisition, becoming NSW’s 3rd largest national park.

The 437,394-hectare site, called Thurloo Downs, 250 klms from Bourke in the state’s north-west, contains globally significant arid zone #wetlands, salt lakes, playas and other geological formations unprotected elsewhere in NSW.

The area is home to #birds including the critically endangered plains wanderer, vulnerable pink cockatoos and the endangered painted snipe; #lizards such as the crowned gecko; #marsupials including sandy inland mouse and the stripe-faced dunnart, plus threatened plant species.

Thurloo is part of the Bulloo Overflow, a critical #ecosystem for huge numbers of #waterbirds, particularly in breeding seasons.

I saw a video reel someone had posted on FB that showed a koala with her baby walking on the footpath of a regional town in Australia. What upset me was that the person filming and every other person in the shot were gushing, smiling or simply ignoring the spectacle. How do we not understand the many things that must have gone wrong (land clearing, flood, introduced predators) for this to occur and to FEEL the utter distress the koalas are in?
