The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said this year’s updated version of the COVID-19 vaccine is likely to come out by the middle of next month, a bit earlier than the late September timeline previously announced by the Department of Health and Human Services.
The earlier-than-expected arrival became apparent after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention scheduled a Sept. 12 meeting of its Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, a likely indication that the vaccine would become available shortly afterward.
The latest version of the vaccine is designed against the Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5, unofficially known as #Kraken.
Unlike last year’s formulation, a bivalent vaccine that was designed against both the ancestral coronavirus strain and the BA.5/BA.4 Omicron subvariants that were circulating at the time, the upcoming vaccine will be #monovalent, specifically designed against #XBB.1.5.

Here's the latest variant picture for the Northern Territory, Australia.
After a gap of over a year, a couple of samples were recently shared from the NT.
The 2 samples are variants that are common elsewhere in Australia - XBB.1.16.* "Arcturus" and XBB.1.5.* "Kraken".
I've been banging on about this for over a year now, so it's great to see data sharing restart. Hopefully that can continue so we get a more accurate picture of the unique mix in this remote area with international air and sea ports.

The variant mix in WA continues to be uniquely chaotic, reflecting it's situation as a global crossroads. Even WA residents who've been racking up regular reinfections are likely to meet globally obscure variants capable of overcoming their immunity.

95% of the XBC.* samples shared recently have come from Australia, and South Australia seems the only state where it is anywhere near dominant.

Awww, I have the #octopus, too, and called hen (gender-neutral Swedish #neopronoun) „Poda“.
I like to hug Poda tight while reading in bed and falling asleep - or shortly during the day when I feel exhausted.
I never really cared for #plushies before, but last December when I saw hen I had to get hen - probably pushed by my engagement with me maybe being #actuallyautistic.
UPDATE: My brother stayed #COVID FREE according to all test results over the past 7 days!
How can we trust the test results given the evasiveness of #kraken?
Maybe we can’t completely, but the fact that he took #RAT on days 0 to 6, waited until 6+ days had gone by, THEN got his #PCR and #NAAT samples taken (all negative) seems good.
PLUS no development of symptoms. Slept in a #N95. #HEPA and #ventilation also helped keep him healthy!
@brooklynmarie I just.... don't. Maybe if I knew people well that could cope with being outside & mutually and effectively masked the whole time, I would.
But a lot of my fave ways to socialize involved food and/or booze. I REALLY used to like home-cooking for people, eating out, and going to bars! For socializing, the atmosphere, and the novelty of having something I don't necessarily make at home! It's just out of the question now.

The new XBB.1.5 "Kraken" lineage continues to spread around the world, as shown in this updated animated map. New York state continues to be the epicentre with over 50% of the shared lineages. Note that this does not directly represent cases, as jurisdictions share sequences at wildly differing rates and times
As well as showing a few more days of recent data, I now have integrated global data for the nextclade.org lineage classifier. Most experts say nextclade lineages are more precise and they also are quicker to include new lineages as they are defined.
On the map page I added a counter to give the number of sequences, and tweaked the map settings to get better positioning for the points.
Please note the locations are not precise - I'm using the country and state/province (where available), as geocoded by Bing Maps.

This was a #fanart I did in April 2017 year of late Elkin Ramírez (1962 - 2017), the former singer and leader of Kraken, an (amazing) Colombian #rock band I like a lot. Shortly after of his passing, I did this as a homage and sent it to their official fanclub.
And this is just the beginning of a long, cool story with this.
