At one point I thought it would be the @system76 Oryx Pro but 17-inchers are big and & power hungry.
Then I wanted it to be my Apple M1, but app compatibility (ARM) has me a little concerned.
I need all day battery life, great display, MODEST dedicated GPU or strong integrated GPU.

Looking at buying a laptop for the wife as she is about to start studying a course online.
A Chromebook would suit her nicely, but with the limited range in Australia and the inflation; a decent Chromebook (quality screen and fast enough processor) is pushing $1000AUD now.
Annoying for that price you aren’t paying too much more and you’re in M1 MacBook Air territory.

It looks like I'm going to be spending more time doing stuff at my village's fab lab/hackspace, so I'm probably going to need a laptop that's less than 12 years old and weighs less than 6kg. (My current, heavily frankensteined HP.)

If you want to suggest a specific model, it needs to be able to handle 3D modelling. I slightly prefer AMD hardware for CPU and GPU, but don't really care as long as it works.

It's just a dumbed down #Linux if you ask me.
I get that the price point might be intriguing for some but why not just get a tablet at that point?

IDK, Windows seems to want to replace the standalone UEFI on computers so it has more control, like what #MacOS has done from day one.

Linus might’ve tracked down a strange problem with Windows laptop battery drain and overheating. They ran into it once on a Mac too, though I never have.
TL;DW: They think it happens when the smart sleep features are enabled (doing Windows updates while closed, etc).
