![Abstract:
To take stock of the human toll resulting from racial inequality in the United States, we estimate the number of excess deaths that accumulated among African Americans over the twentieth century as a result of the enduring racial gap in mortality rates. We assemble a wide array of demographic and vital statistics data for all years since 1900 to calculate the number of Black deaths in each half-decade that occurred in excess of what would be projected if Blacks had experienced the same gender- and age-specific mortality rates as Whites. We estimate that there were almost 7.7 million excess deaths among African Americans from 1900 through 1999. Those deaths comprised over 40% of all African American deaths over the century.
Excess deaths were highest in the early decades (peaking in 1925–1934), but the only period of sustained decline was 1935–1949. Subsequent reductions in excess deaths were relatively modest and unstable, and in the last decade of the century the percentage of Blacks’ deaths that were excess returned to levels as high as in the first decade. That trajectory is less positive than the trajectory for the racial gap in life expectancy over the century.

Last Saturday, I got excited and decided I was going to learn to crochet so I could replace a hat that I loved, yet lost. This is not that hat.
This was my practice scrap that I got carried away with. It is a cheap jersey material that we picked up at the dollar store. This is the Nipple Hat.

I'm still getting such a kick out of painting sumi (traditional Japanese #ink) plum blossoms! They are so pretty!
During my journey to #learn self-hosting an #automation pipeline based on #opensource solutions, I found out about the score-spec platform. It's an intriguing idea to use a declarative notation to orchestrate cloud native software development. While there might be other similar solutions, this one is coming to life and is still in an early stage. It looks very promising to me. I just got two additional VPS from a good and generous friend to test it out.

A big thing I’ve learned about myself is quality video content is the best way to learn, which is mad as I was convinced it wasn’t for me
But there’s no substitute for just building a bloody thing to really #learn it. I had no idea/intention to be working with #PostgreSQL and #JavaScript on the edge this year, yet here I am and have only got this far by having a project to force me along
So yeah, if you’re #training to be a #developer , invest in good video courses but build a bloody thing too
Part 2 of my #introduction ; I call it Stuff I Dig. I’m drawn to the #natural #sciences and like to #learn. My #reading lately is #scifi and I’m focused on #JamesRollins and #RobertJordan. My #writing lately is a mix of dry nonfiction and what I call Dark Americana. I’m old so I watch #jeopardy religiously. I also appreciate #Andor and all #StarWars content. I try not to bellyache too much about everything being a remake; instead I try to appreciate #art that is new and original. Yes every possible story has already been told, but tell it in your own way FCOL. I’m a relative #ludite and #loner compared to most netizens. A perfect day for me is spent mostly alone on my #bicycle. Life is best when it’s nice and #boring. But I still enjoy a bit of friendly chit chat especially with people I’d not be likely to encounter IRL.
