My dad died in September 2021 at the age of 78 of an undiagnosed #myeloma. That was abrupt, he died 3 weeks after arriving at the hospital, I still often think about that terrible month.
Beside having been a school #teacher, he painted is whole life since the age of 15, and left a large #legacy of #paintings and #drawings. I immediately thought about #digitizing his complete work, even if it looked like a huge undertaking, probably for both said and unsaid reasons.
#OHSU is merging with #Legacy Health who thinks pregnant women are cash cows to milk in another hospital, not one near where they live. Nurses are contemplating a strike. America's highly profitable healthcare system remains the best in the universe b/c very rich people keep getting richer as everyone else bows to their power and wealth for generations. For-profit medicine is the best, isn't it? Oh, Holy Political Parties, where is there an ass we can kiss to get some service around here?

It seems sensible that lawmakers consider making that something illegal. There is an investigation of the issue. Have you seen the Harvard stats? Also, just because something else contributed to the continuing inequity does not mean that #legacy #admission are ok.
Time to re-up this 2004 letter to #Harvard Magazine.
2 decades & 2 kids (age 10 & 12) later, same words still apply: "Should [our kids] ever decide to apply to and be accepted at Harvard, we would not want them to have any doubt in their minds that it is because of their abilities and future potential—not because their parents are Harvard alumni. We urge Harvard to end its policy of favoring children of alumni in the college admissions process."

I’ve been thinking about “what I want to get out of life” a lot lately. Maaaaaybe it was a little bit of an existential crisis, too, but that’s kind of par for the course for me, anyway. 👀
So, anyway, I wrote this poem to gather my thoughts:

Who am I?
I am an amalgamation of everything I’ve seen, done, thought, imagined, and interacted with.
I’m more than a face.
I am a collection ideas, voices, passions— A force. A type of strength that can’t be seen.
I’m more than a body.
I am a legacy. What I want and what I envision will not die, even though I someday will.

I’ve realized that, at the very least, I want to do what I can to help make the world a better place, even if it’s in the smallest of ways. I can be a wave that creates a ripple effect— a wave that helps carry someone else to shore.

Happy to hear about the affirmative action ruling. I know this is controversial, but race-based admissions don’t make sense to me. If anything affirmative action should be income based. Affluent kids prep for admissions to elite colleges which students of lower incomes cannot afford. And get rid of legacy preferences. That one step might help reduce the wealth gap.
