What is the relationship between politics and aesthetics? Sartwell has an unexpected answer:

"Not all art is political, but all politics is aesthetic; at their heart political ideologies, systems, and constitutions are aesthetic systems, multimedia artistic environments. The political “content” of an ideology can be understood in large measure actually to be—to be identical with—its formal and stylistic aspects. It’s not that a political ideology or movement gets tricked out in a manipulative set of symbols or design tropes; it’s that an ideology is an aesthetic system, and this is what moves or fails to move people, attracts their loyalty or repugnance, moves them to act or to apathy".

Cover of the book "Political Aesthetics" by Crispin Sartwell.

@JoBlakely It's called "library science".

And therein lie conflicts, beliefs, irreconcilable differences, religions, and civil wars.

I'd hashtagged Paul Otlet, who made this his life's work in the early 20th century, culminating in a vast index-card driven database in Belgium, the Mundaneum, ultimately destroyed by the Nazis in WWII.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Otlet

Amongst bibliographic standards, there's the Dublin Core (named after the city in Ohio, not Ireland), which attempts to describe a set of common and useful metadata attributes, though it's been criticised on numerous grounds:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dublin_Core

The US Library of Congress has its own systems, notably the LoC Classification and LoC Subject Headings. Otlet himself came up with the Decimal Classification. (Both LoC and Otlet based their work significantly on that of Melville Dewey, though LoC also inherited Thomas Jefferson's personal book classification structure, as it was Jefferson's collection which initiated the Library of Congress, and if you're interested in that, there are about a century and a half of Librarian's Reports to Congress which detail the history of how that collection (and its physical infrastructure) developed: https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/000072049 with recent editions (past 20 or so years) at the LoC itself: https://www.loc.gov/about/reports-and-budgets/annual-reports/)

A key point that's often forgotten is that metadata serves users' and archivists' needs, and NOT the interests of authors or publishers. This gives rise to two major issues:

Self-classification or description (including full-text -search-based-access as is common online) elevates author and publisher interests over readers. SEO, spam, and clickbait are amongst the highly predictable outcomes of this.
Reader and archivist concerns change with time. It's pretty fascinating to look at various Global Classifications Of All Knowledge over time, dating to, say, Aristotle and earlier, but notably Francis and Roger Bacon (no relation), Denis Diderot, Voltaire, etc. Encyclopedia organisational systems especially are a pretty fascinating insight.

The US LoC is criticised for being US-centric, and anchored in 19th (and 18th) century thinking. Both points are absolutely true, but they're also a reflection of where the collection originated and who it served. In particular, some idosyncracies (the vast sections of History devoted to the US and Americas, relative to the Rest Of the World, say), reflect the actual physical collection and the fact that most of the history books included covered those regions.

The Librarian's letters beginning around the turn of the 20th century address expansion and revision of the classification system. I've spent a lot of time going through it, and find a few interesting bits such as, say, the legal classification of state law, which is utterly dominated by two states in particular: New York and California. (Several other mostly north-eastern / industrial states are also relatively large.) Again: that's where the interesting detail happens to lie.

And yes, religion, culture, social groups and movements, etc., are all subject to various forms of abuse, neglect, and/or revision over time. To that extent I find the LoC's classifications in that the have evolved mechanisms to adapt to change over time particularly commendable. Not perfection, but moving toward it, most of the time.

Although Bruno Latour's theories have had contradictory interpretations, he is a source of very interesting ideas and tools for understanding the world and acting politically in it (even if we do not agree with all his ideas). A highly recommended book is "War of the Worlds: What about Peace?" (2002). Available on BL's website: http://www.bruno-latour.fr/sites/default/files/85-WAR-OF-WORLDS-GB.pdf

"The common world we took
for granted must instead be progressively composed, it is not already constituted. The common world is not behind us and ready made, like nature, but ahead of us, an immense task which we will need to accomplish one step at a time. It is not above us, like the arbiter who mediates conflicts, it is what is at stake in these conflicts, what could become the subject of compromise—should negotiation take place. The common world is now up for grabs".

I was shocked/entertained by the story of dissertations being thrown away and then rescued after dumpster images went viral this week. But in #ReadingTheComments, I can't get one out of my head:

"Libraries can't afford to be warehouses that store books that no one ever reads!"

Someone actually thought typing those words and broadcasting them to the world would make them look wise, that they were offering valuable criticism with their take. 🤦Capitalism is so pervasively engrained in westerners that we cannot imagine rare books existing without being profitable! I will tell you, besides going to far off places and accessing interesting environments, finding valuable information in a rare source is a very close second place in ranking why I love being a professor!

Authors: want to know how to give your book the best chance of being chosen by Australian libraries? One of my favourite places is my local library. Not just because of all the wonderful librarians and the books I get to borrow, but I also get the buzz of seeing my own books on the recently returned shelf, or hear that my farm memoir is being enjoyed or dissected by another bookclub. This week too, Australian authors received our Lending Rights notification (the annual payment AU authors receive if there are at least 50 copies of your book available in AU libraries). There are many reasons why it's important for authors (trad and indie!) to work on building library demand for our books, and for all the writers who have asked me how to go about it, I've created a handy online course with all the info, tips, links, registration pages, list of distributors, marketing ideas and downloads you need to give you and your book the best chance at Australian library success. You can access the course at www.boldauthors.com - hope it helps you achieve your goals!

The crusade to rid school libraries (and public libraries) of "obscene" books doesn't protect children; it deprives them of the few avenues for education that could protect them, or at least rescue them from ongoing abuse.

Concurrently, good sex education helps prevent #TeenPregnancy, reducing the need for #Abortion.

#BookBans #Libraries #AbortionIsHealthcare #ChildSexualAbuse

https://bookriot.com/sex-ed-books-protect-kids/

To wit:
https://www.nbcnews.com/nbc-out/out-news/lgbtq-book-ban-advocate-faces-felony-child-molestation-charge-missouri-rcna14763

Three tweets by Society of Secret Library Friends:

A ten year old girl in Delaware picked up "It's Perfectly Normal" while at the library with her mother. When they came home, she showed her mom the chapter on sexual abuse and said, "this is me". She was being abused by her father, and it was the first time she'd spoken about it.

The father was convicted, and the judge said, "There were heroes in this case. One was the child, and the other was the book." Also a hero was the librarian who made this book available on the shelves.

The author wrote, "I wish we never had to talk with kids about any of these aberrant behaviors. But we have to do so because kids have a right to have accurate information that can keep them healthy and safe. They need to know how to get help to make any abusive behavior stop."
