Satellite imagery has really increased our knowledge base.
Imagine when we have a great deal more #LiDAR data for the #earthworks regions in the #Amazon. So much remains hidden in #satellite imagery. With satellite imagery surveys, imagery time of year is very relevant to what is seen or not seen. Also, sometimes field burning reveals a lot if the satellite imagery timing is just right. Check out this example, from -15.5276, -65.692857.

Left LA Thursday morning with two other crew members, drove 15 hours to Denver only to find there were no hotel rooms in the city, ended up driving through the night and all of Friday and stayed the night in Hammond, Indiana. Saturday was a 14 hour drive to Mystic, CT and arrived at 11p. Woke up at 5:30a and 3D scanned the Mystic Seaport until 10p. We managed to do 2 days worth of scanning done in one, giving us a nice reprieve today to recover.

The impoundment size index (ISI) in #WhiteboxTools is great! In the image, sites that are non-impoundable by a 25-m dam are white and the darker blue a pixel is, the larger the upslope impoundment is. Well. The question is wrong.

Here is the right question.

Does a well-maintained validation process for any given vehicle **demand** a Lidar sensor (or any other hardware)?

That is it.

System designers, that are properly engaged in designing a #SafetyCritical system, are subservient to both the initial and continuous (that is, never ending) validation process.

If, like me, you tried to process laz/las files (typically #lidar data) with #qgis under recent versions of ubuntu, you might have found out that ubuntu standard repos don't include pdal anymore.

I found a workaround by converting the files to copc using the conda version of pdal, then work with copc.

This morning I learned that there was a much better workaround, thanks to Martin Dobias on github: install qgis from the ubuntugis repos, as they include a pdal package.

The reason that many other actual #SelfDrivingCar companies have employed #Lidar sensors in their vehicles from the start (pre-validation) is to hedge their bets.

And for a novel safety-critical systems operating in a very complex ODD, hedging your bets is likely smart.

But, again, the job is never done.

And while #Waymo might be pleased with their 5th Generation hardware suite today, their ODDs (both present and future) will demand a 6th Generation. And a 7th. And so on.

So, is a #Lidar sensor required for a #SelfDrivingCar?

I don't know.

Ask the ODD!

And another thing to keep in mind is that #SafetyCritical systems must always be kept open for modification.

The job of interpreting the demands of the ODD is never done.

You will never interpret it correctly the first time.

This is why **continuous** (that is, never-ending) validation is so important - and expensive.

Sorry, self-driving car investors.

For those that follow #Tesla's #FSDBeta program and the myriad of unmet "self-driving timelines" that #Musk has set over the years, this is a common question that often overshadows everything else.

Musk had famously called Lidar sensors "a crutch" and Tesla vehicles themselves have undergone several hardware suite changes.

What is going on here?
