For the #SciArtSeptember prompt “metallic” my linocut Osmia lignaria, the metallic blue orchard mason bee.
We think of bees as living in hives, but these bees live in reeds or natural holes which they divide into chambers with mud walls. We also tend to picture yellow and black stripes, but this small bee is blue to blue-green. 🧵1/2
Well, I finished that blog post. In case you missed it, it's here: https://www.aneclecticmind.com/2023/09/23/exploring-visual-art/
The #SciArtSeptember prompt adornment made me think of fashion, “mauve madness” & William Henry Perkin (1838-1907)’s serendipitous discovery of the 1st synthetic organic dye: mauveine.
Perkin entered the Royal College of Chemistry in London in 1853 at 15, studying with August Wilhelm von Hofmann who hired him as his assistant in 1855 & had him working on a series of experiments to try & synthesize quinine, used to treat malaria.

It's officially the first day of Autumn! I'm a cooler weather person and love the gloomier months so this is my happy time! And to celebrate here are my coven of cats who also like it dark, moody and spooky!

For the #SciArtSeptember prompt nocturnal my linocut print of an eclipse of moths! Isn’t that a great #termOfVenery for a group of #moths? It’s the moon at lunar eclipse in oranges and brown against a very dark sky behind 5 Ontario moths: the gorgeous green Luna moth (Actias luna), the yellow and purplish-pink Imperial moth (Eacles imperialis), …
For the #SciArtSeptember theme sweet, my dance of the honeybees.
This is a linocut showing one of the ways the honeybee communicates through dance. A worker bee can return to the hive & through the way it aligns itself with respect to the sun & the honeycomb, the waggles & loops of its movement convey information on the location in terms of distance & direction of tasty flower pollen sources to its fellow bees. #MastoArt

While Rosalind Franklin (1920 – 1958), #chemist & #crystallographer is now remembered because her x-ray diffraction images which were instrumental to discovering double-helix structure of #DNA, I am posting her for #SciArtSeptember theme charcoal, because of her important contributions to #carbon research.
She made invaluable contributions across physics, chemistry & biology, working to determining the structure of #RNA,
For #SciArtSeptember day 17: abstract, my cubist inspired portrait of mathematician Henri Poincaré. This print is about how art movements in art can be connected with contemporary math and physics (and other sciences). Specifically, the way Cubism breaks from a single favoured perspective or absolute frame of reference & attempts to break down subjects into
Happy birthday Canadian scientist/writer Ursula Franklin (1921 – 2016), thinker on role of tech in society, advocate for women in STEM, peace & social justice. (#SciArtSeptember prompt ochre.) Her research interests were guided by her principles, including gathering evidence of the harmful health effects of radiation from atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons or her work on political & societal impacts of support of tech & its use.

Layer 5/5 and done! New limited edition linocut print well in time for spooky season. Been fun doing a colourful little character piece and it's mostly gone to plan which is always a bonus. Available in a small edition over on my shops and today and tomorrow only you can get £5 on Etsy with their 'GET5' promotion (available to UK, US & Canada only - their rules not mine). https://blockforest.etsy.com/listing/1563492827

Don't usually do the hard sell here but bizarrely Etsy is covering a £5 off of orders over £25+ for this weekend only (ends Sunday eve) so head over to my shop - https://blockforest.etsy.com - if you want a little discount.
Offer is open to buyers in UK, USA and Canada only (etsy's rules - not mine).
I don't usually do sales so this as good as it gets!
Here are the two #linocut #prints I made and colored in. The top was one with water-based ink so I couldn't use watercolor paint on it. I used oil pastels. The one beneath it was printed in oil-based ink and allowed to dry for more than a week before I hit it with #watercolors. I'm not thrilled with either one. I might work on the block to thin up the printing lines. That's a project for next month, though.
I always say to myself ‘stop working so small’ but somehow it never goes that way 😂😱 I swear my smallest #pfeil always gets the most use.

The #SciArtSeptember prompt is bird-like, so I made this #linocut hummingbird clearwing moth (Hermaris thysbe) seeking pollen from cherry blossoms! The olive-headed burgundy moth has transparent wings (though colour can be variable). It beats its wings rapidly to hover above flowers, like a hummingbird, meaning it is often confused with a hummingbird or bee.
Layer 4/5 - nearly there! This was a tricky one, the green didn't play the same as in tests and came out a bit darker but that's the joy of layering inks! Little bit of black to go which hopefully adds a little contrast and brings that green out - we'll see!

Franchement allez-y, c'est de la bonne gravure et c'est ce que je produis de plus proche du #furry (on peut peut-être appeler ça du dark furry ?)
For the #SciArtSeptember prompt glowing, it’s my linocut of the #bioluminescent firefly squid! The firefly squid (Watasenia scintillans), also called sparkling enope squid or hotaru-ika in Japan, live at depth (200 to 400 m) and are bioluminescent and emit blue light from photophores. 🧵1/2
This was my first little trial linocut, about two years ago. Rather chunky, but I like it. It measures 16x24cm and is (still) special to me. Looking forward to (a real) autumn!
There are still some left. Buy here for €40,- https://www.schulte-printmaking.com/product/10647586/little-light
The #SciArtSeptember prompt is carmine, a bright red pigment derived from carminic acid, traditionally harvested from cochineal, a sessile parasite on Opuntia cacti in South America, north through to Mexico and the southwest US. They are laboriously collected by brushing them off the pads of prickly pear cacti. The insect makes carminic acid to deter predators but it’s precisely what attracts people,…
For the #SciArtSeptember theme “lyrical” I’m going with the use of imagination & analogy in the exploration & communication of science through thought-experiments like Lyell’s Amphibious Being! In geologist Charles Lyell (1797-1875)’s famous ‘Principles of Geology,’ he wrote that to avoid some sources of prejudice in understanding #geology would require an Amphibious Being, 🧵1/n
The #SciArtSeptember prompt gossamer made me think of the wings of this Megachile brevis leafcutter bee.
Unlike the better known, and imported honeybee, the Leafcutter bees are solitary and make no honey, but they are vital pollinators who play an important role in the ecosystem. They are found throughout the US and southern Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific. 🧵1/2
For #SciArtSeptember day 9: heart, it’s trailblazing American #biochemist Marie Maynard Daly (1921-2003), 1st Black woman to earn a PhD in #chemistry in the US! She made important research contributions to the biochemisty of the cell nucleus & cardiovascular issues & our knowledge of the chemistry of histones & protein synthesis. She published original research establishing that….

For the #SciArtSeptember prompt “simian” I made a new edition to my ongoing series of animals with fabulous collective nouns. It’s A Conspiracy of Lemurs. These ring-tailed lemurs definitely appear to be up to something. Caught in the act of scheming. The word “lemurs” mimics their tails, of course!
The ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) is a wet-nosed primate, endemic to Madagascar. 🧵1/n
This is a hellishly clever lady, and I love that she's written about her process. Also: REDUCTION lino, which is a terrifying method (also known as "suicide print" because one screw up and the whole edition can be ballsed up...)
For #SciArtSeptember Day 7: indigo a little story of analogy & bias in the most famous physicist of all. My lino block print is inspired by the earliest colour wheel, made by Isaac Newton. When he first split white light in 1665 into the rainbow spectrum of colours, he named & described what he saw as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet (often denoted ROY G BIV).

For #SciArtSeptember prompt cold blooded, a favourite dinosaur: the torosaurus.
Torosaurus with its big frill had the largest known head of any land animal. It was a sort of long-frilled Ceratopsians who lived in at the end of the Cretaceous period, 70 to 65 millon years ago. It was a contemporary of the best-known of the horned dinosaurs, the Triceratops. Some recent research suggests that Torosaurus were not
This linocut print is about the milkweed plant, beloved of the native pollinators. Well-known for its appeal to monarch butterflies, it is also a favourite of the many different native bumblebees & insects like this small milkweed bug. 🧵1/2
For #SciArtSeptember day 2: battle, it’s my linocut of 2 dangerous invasive beauties & the battle against their spread in eastern North America, the spotted lanternfly & tree of heaven. The Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altimissa) is a deciduous tree native to NE China & Taiwan, which was foolishly brought to Europe & NA in the 1700s where it as become known as a noxious weed & invasive plant. 🧵1/n

I'm getting excited for spooky season! Honestly my favourite time of year as it starts to get a bit gloomier and before the festive season takes over everything. Seeing lots of halloween stuff in the shops as well, it's like everyone's finally got the memo that spooky season is the best!
Close up shot from my 'Cat Coven' print of mystical moggies.
Welcome to #SciArtSeptember! For day 1: starry, it’s #astrophysicist Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (1900-1979), who discovered what stars are made of & that hydrogen & helium are the most common elements in the universe.
Born England, she won a scholarship to Newnham College Cambridge in 1919 where she heard a lecture which changed her life. 🧵1/n

For the Water Docs Film Festival ARTivism challenge theme “Water is life: Interconnection” I was thinking about the inescapable this summer: the way so much of this country is and has been literally on fire, I began to conceive of my water cyanotype as one half of a diptych. All 13 provinces and So far 150,504 km squared, or as much as 4% of the forested area of Canada, has burned.

One of my wiwaxia for #InverteFest!
This is a handprinted Wiwaxia, a half billion year old soft-bodied animal covered in scales and spines. These animals lived in the early and middle Cambrian period and fossils are found worldwide, including in Canada's Burgess Shale. The animals themselves were only about 5 cm (2") but my linocut prints are much bigger.
