For the #SciArtSeptember prompt “metallic” my linocut Osmia lignaria, the metallic blue orchard mason bee.
We think of bees as living in hives, but these bees live in reeds or natural holes which they divide into chambers with mud walls. We also tend to picture yellow and black stripes, but this small bee is blue to blue-green. 🧵1/2

The #SciArtSeptember prompt adornment made me think of fashion, “mauve madness” & William Henry Perkin (1838-1907)’s serendipitous discovery of the 1st synthetic organic dye: mauveine.
Perkin entered the Royal College of Chemistry in London in 1853 at 15, studying with August Wilhelm von Hofmann who hired him as his assistant in 1855 & had him working on a series of experiments to try & synthesize quinine, used to treat malaria.

This is a linocut showing one of the ways the honeybee communicates through dance. A worker bee can return to the hive & through the way it aligns itself with respect to the sun & the honeycomb, the waggles & loops of its movement convey information on the location in terms of distance & direction of tasty flower pollen sources to its fellow bees. #MastoArt

Here are the two #linocut #prints I made and colored in. The top was one with water-based ink so I couldn't use watercolor paint on it. I used oil pastels. The one beneath it was printed in oil-based ink and allowed to dry for more than a week before I hit it with #watercolors. I'm not thrilled with either one. I might work on the block to thin up the printing lines. That's a project for next month, though.
I always say to myself ‘stop working so small’ but somehow it never goes that way 😂😱 I swear my smallest #pfeil always gets the most use.

The #SciArtSeptember prompt is bird-like, so I made this #linocut hummingbird clearwing moth (Hermaris thysbe) seeking pollen from cherry blossoms! The olive-headed burgundy moth has transparent wings (though colour can be variable). It beats its wings rapidly to hover above flowers, like a hummingbird, meaning it is often confused with a hummingbird or bee.

Layer 4/5 - nearly there! This was a tricky one, the green didn't play the same as in tests and came out a bit darker but that's the joy of layering inks! Little bit of black to go which hopefully adds a little contrast and brings that green out - we'll see!

These ring-tailed lemurs definitely appear to be up to something. Caught in the act of scheming. The word “lemurs” mimics their tails, of course!

For #SciArtSeptember Day 7: indigo a little story of analogy & bias in the most famous physicist of all. My lino block print is inspired by the earliest colour wheel, made by Isaac Newton. When he first split white light in 1665 into the rainbow spectrum of colours, he named & described what he saw as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet (often denoted ROY G BIV).

One of my wiwaxia for #InverteFest!
This is a handprinted Wiwaxia, a half billion year old soft-bodied animal covered in scales and spines. These animals lived in the early and middle Cambrian period and fossils are found worldwide, including in Canada's Burgess Shale. The animals themselves were only about 5 cm (2") but my linocut prints are much bigger.
